Chapter 42 Chapter 42

Chapter 42 Chapter 42
"The important thing is that you've been found," Dianne said, her voice steady despite the emotion shimmering beneath. "After twenty years of waiting, how matters less than the fact that you're here."

Richard nodded, his weathered face reflecting decades of determined searching. "Though we owe Tony a debt of gratitude for accelerating the process. His recognition of your talent led him to you before our standard background checks would have been completed."

Bryce couldn't contain his excitement any longer. "And now we can use the competition to announce your return! It's perfect symbolism – the Lawson Design Competition finally fulfilling its true purpose."

Theodore shot his youngest brother a warning glance, concerned that Bryce's enthusiasm might overwhelm Iris. "Of course, the public announcement should be carefully managed, on your timeline."

Victor, ever vigilant, had positioned himself near the library windows, periodically checking the security feeds on his phone. "Speaking of public announcements, we've detected increased social media activity regarding today's events. Campus rumours are spreading."

Iris sighed, unsurprised by this development. The university's rumour mill operated with ruthless efficiency. "My classmate Christy has been messaging me. She's particularly persistent."

"We should get ahead of this," Theodore advised, his PR experience asserting itself. "A controlled statement would be preferable to speculation running wild."

Richard studied his daughter's face, noting the fatigue beginning to show beneath her composed exterior. For all her remarkable poise, she was still a young woman who had experienced a life-altering revelation in the span of a single day.

"Perhaps that's a discussion for tomorrow," he suggested gently. "It's been an overwhelming day for everyone, especially Iris."

Dianne nodded in agreement, her maternal instincts fully awakened despite twenty years of dormancy. "You must be exhausted, dear. Would you like to stay here tonight? We've prepared a guest suite for you." She hesitated, then added softly, "Not the nursery. We understand that would be too much, too soon."

The consideration in Dianne's offer touched Iris deeply. Her birth mother was clearly making every effort to respect her boundaries while still hoping for connection.

"Thank you, but I should return to campus," Iris replied, though the thought of facing curious classmates made her stomach tighten. "I have classes in the morning, but I think that we should put out a statement; otherwise, I’m not going to be able to make it to class, let alone anything else. Ah, and Tony, I think we’re both going to have a lot of questions aimed just at us alone, considering the phones of us in the car park.”

Tony nodded in agreement, his expression serious. "We definitely need a statement. The speculation is already out of control." He glanced at his phone, where notifications continued to accumulate. "And yes, that kiss is definitely making the rounds."

A faint blush colored Iris's cheeks at the mention of the kiss, though she maintained her composure. The practical part of her mind was already calculating the most efficient approach to addressing the rumours, even as another part still processed the monumental revelations of the day.

Theodore pulled out his tablet, his PR instincts fully engaged. "We should draft something tonight for review. Simple, factual, with enough personal elements to satisfy curiosity without inviting further intrusion." He looked at Iris with newfound brotherly protectiveness. "Would you like to see it before it goes out?"

"Yes, please," Iris replied, grateful for his consideration. "I'd like my adoptive parents to see it too, if possible. This affects them as well."

Richard nodded in approval, respect for the Maxwells evident in his expression. These people had given his daughter everything he couldn't for nineteen years; their feelings deserved consideration in how her story was shared with the world.

"A wise suggestion," he said. "We'll send them the draft as well."

Across town, Helga Kennedy paced in her penthouse office, irritation growing as her calls to Tony went unanswered. On her desk, the preliminary report on the Maxwell family lay open, its contents already forming the foundation of her strategy. Julius watched from the doorway, his concern deepening with each passing minute.

"He's not going to call you back tonight," Julius finally said. "Not after what happened at the Lawson estate."

Helga turned, her perfectly maintained composure slipping slightly. "This infatuation with the Maxwell girl, or Lawson girl, whatever she calls herself, is becoming problematic. If Antony aligns himself with the Lawsons personally, our business leverage diminishes significantly."

"Perhaps that's not the worst outcome," Julius suggested carefully. "A personal connection between our families might open doors that business maneuvers cannot."

Helga's eyes narrowed at her husband's uncharacteristic pushback. "Since when do you advocate for sentimental approaches to business strategy?"

"Since I saw our son look at that girl the way I once looked at you," Julius replied quietly. "Before business became our primary connection."

His words landed with unexpected impact, momentarily silencing Helga's strategic calculations. For a brief instant, she remembered the early days of their relationship, before ambition had overshadowed affection. The memory was uncomfortable, a reminder of emotional territory long abandoned.

In the Lawson library, Theodore had begun drafting the statement, his fingers moving efficiently across the tablet's screen. Victor continued his security monitoring while Bryce hovered near Iris, barely containing his excitement at having found his sister after twenty years of searching.

"We should include something about the exhibition of Iris' entry, which helped us to find her after so long; however, due to her integrity for the competition, she has decided to withdraw her entry from competing to allow all other entries a fair chance,” Bryce added.

Iris nodded, “Ah, can I get some fresh air, please, and Tony, I think we should talk about how we’re going to address our respective classes.”

Richard nodded, understanding his daughter's need for space after such an overwhelming day. "Of course. The terrace just through those doors offers some privacy," he said, gesturing toward a set of French doors at the far end of the library.

Tony rose, grateful for the opportunity to speak with Iris alone. They had much to discuss, not just their personal connection, which had deepened significantly throughout this extraordinary day, but also the practical matters of navigating their respective worlds now that everything had changed.

As they stepped onto the terrace, the cool evening air provided a welcome relief from the emotional intensity of the library. Moonlight bathed the extensive gardens below in silver light, creating a dreamlike quality that matched the surreal nature of the day's events.

Iris took a deep breath, allowing the fresh air to clear her mind. For someone who prided herself on meticulous planning and careful analysis, today had been an exercise in adapting to one life-altering revelation after another. Her fingers instinctively sought the iris pin in her pocket, the tangible connection between her two identities.
