Chapter 9 War at the Gates
The courtyard erupted into chaos.
Wolves shouted over each other, some demanding we prepare for battle, others arguing for negotiation. The air crackled with alpha dominance as tempers flared and instincts screamed for action.
But I could not hear any of it. My entire focus was locked on the messenger’s words echoing in my head.
Marcus Blackwood. My father. Here.
Through the bond, I felt Kael’s wolf clawing for release, demanding blood. His hands on my shoulders trembled with barely restrained violence.
“How many warriors did you say?” His voice came out as a growl that made the messenger flinch.
“Fifty with Alpha Marcus, my King. But Alpha King Victor Kane brought twice that number. They have positioned themselves at our northern border, just outside our territorial line. They claim they come in peace, but they are armed for war.”
“Peace.” Kael laughed, cold and bitter. “Victor Kane does not know the meaning of the word.”
Lyra appeared beside the platform, already dressed for battle. “What are your orders, Alpha King?”
“Mobilise our forces. I want two hundred warriors at the border within the hour. Full combat readiness.” His dominance rolled out like thunder, and wolves scattered to obey. “And send word to our allied packs. If this escalates, I want reinforcements ready.”
“Kael, wait.” I grabbed his arm, forcing him to look at me. “You cannot just”
“Cannot what?” His eyes burned gold, his wolf too close to the surface. “Cannot protect my mate from the alpha who abused her for eighteen years? Cannot defend my territory from invaders? What exactly can I not do, Sera?”
His anger was not directed at me, but it still made me flinch. Through the bond, I felt his immediate regret.
“I am sorry.” He pulled me against his chest, breathing deeply as if my scent could calm the storm raging inside him. “I am sorry. My wolf is demanding I tear your father apart for what he did to you. For daring to come here and demand your return like you are property to be reclaimed.”
“I know. I can feel it.” I pressed my palm over his racing heart. “But if you go to that border ready for war, that is exactly what you will get. Victor Kane is looking for an excuse to attack. Do not give it to him.”
“Then what do you suggest?” His voice was strained. “Because letting them take you is not an option. I will burn the world before I let anyone hurt you again.”
I pulled back enough to meet his eyes. “I am not suggesting you let them take me. I am suggesting we go together and face this with strategy instead of rage. We need to understand what they want.”
“I know what they want.” Kael’s jaw clenched. “Victor wants to destabilise my rule by any means necessary. Your father wants either his property back or compensation for losing it. They have allied because they both see you as a weakness they can exploit.”
Through the bond, I felt his fear beneath the fury. Fear that he would lose me the way he lost Isabelle. Fear that his enemies would take another mate from him.
“Then we prove them wrong,” I said firmly. “We show them I am not a weakness. I am your strength. Your Luna Queen.” I turned to address the crowd still gathered. “All of you witnessed my challenge tonight. I promised to prove my worth as your Luna. This is where I start.”
Thomas Reed pushed forward, his expression wary. “You want to face your abuser? The alpha who sold you like cattle? That is not a strength, omega. That is suicide.”
“No. Hiding behind my mate’s protection while others fight my battles is suicide. It is surrender.” I lifted my chin. “My father thinks I am still the broken girl he beat into submission. He thinks I will cower and obey when he commands. But I am not that girl anymore. I am Luna Sera Thorne, bonded mate to the Alpha King. And I will face him as an equal, not a victim.”
Murmurs rippled through the remaining crowd. Some sceptical, some impressed, some openly worried.
Garrett stepped forward. “Luna Sera is right. If we respond with pure aggression, we play into Victor Kane’s hands. He wants a war. He wants the Alpha King to appear unstable and violent. But if we respond with measured strength, showing unity between the Alpha King and his Luna, we maintain the moral high ground.”
“The moral high ground will not matter if they attack,” Lyra argued. “We need to be prepared for battle.”
“Then prepare for battle,” I said. “But let me try diplomacy first. Let me speak to my father and show him he has no power over me anymore.”
Kael was silent for a long moment, his internal struggle visible on his face. Finally, he nodded. “We go together. You, me, Lyra, Garrett, and fifty of our best warriors. We meet them at the border with strength but not aggression. We listen to what they want.” His eyes hardened. “And if your father so much as looks at you wrong, I will end him. Diplomacy be damned.”
Thirty minutes later, we rode toward the northern border.
I had changed into more practical dark pants, boots, and a fitted jacket that allowed movement while still looking regal. Kael insisted I wear a visible weapon, so a silver dagger hung at my hip. I had no idea how to use it, but the weight was strangely comforting.
Kael rode beside me, his massive black horse matching pace with my smaller grey mare. Behind us, fifty Northern Kingdom warriors moved in perfect formation. Ahead, Lyra and Garrett scouted the path.
Through the bond, I felt Kael’s constant vigilance. His wolf rode just beneath his skin, ready to explode into violence at the first sign of threat.
“What is Victor Kane like?” I asked, needing to understand the enemy we faced.
“Intelligent. Ruthless. Patient.” Kael’s hands tightened on his reins. “He rules the Western Territories through manipulation and fear. Where I use direct dominance, he uses political manoeuvring. He was behind Isabelle’s assassination, though I could never prove it definitively enough to justify war.”
“And my father allied with him because?”
“Because Victor promised him something he wants more than you. Power, probably. Territory. Victor is very good at finding what people desire most and using it against them.”
The forest began to thin as we approached the border. Through the trees, I could see the gathering ahead wolves arranged in military formation, banners bearing the crests of both the Blackwood Pack and the Western Territories.
And standing at the front, arms crossed and expression smug, was my father.
Every muscle in my body locked. Eighteen years of conditioning screamed at me to make myself small, to submit, to disappear before he noticed me. My hands shook on the reins.
Kael reached over and covered my hand with his. “Breathe, Sera. You are not alone. I am here. My pack is here. He cannot hurt you anymore.”
“He already is hurting me,” I whispered. “Just seeing him makes me feel like that powerless girl again.”
“Then remember who you are now.” His voice was gentle but firm. “You are the woman who survived my wolf. Who stared down three thousand wolves tonight and made them listen. Who carries my mark and my protection? You are not powerless, Sera. You never were. You were just convinced you were.”
His words steadied me. I straightened my spine and lifted my chin as we rode into the clearing.
Marcus Blackwood’s eyes locked on me immediately, and his expression twisted with disgust and rage. “There she is. My disobedient daughter, playing dress-up as a queen.”
Every instinct screamed at me to look away, to apologise, to submit. But I forced myself to meet his gaze without flinching.
Beside my father stood another man tall and elegant with silver-streaked hair and cold blue eyes. Alpha King Victor Kane. He studied me with the intensity of a predator assessing prey.
“Alpha King Thorne,” Victor said smoothly. “Thank you for agreeing to this meeting. We were concerned you might respond with typical violence rather than civilised discussion.”
“Civilised discussion does not usually involve armed warriors at my border,” Kael responded, his tone dangerously calm. “State your business, Victor. Why have you brought Marcus Blackwood to my territory?”
“I bring him as an ally seeking justice. You see, there seems to be some confusion about a transaction.” Victor’s smile was razor-sharp. “Alpha Marcus sold you an omega for a bride price. A business arrangement. Yet I hear you have mated with her, claimed her as your Luna Queen, when the contract clearly stated she was to bear you heirs and then be released. You have violated the terms of your agreement.”
“The contract stated she would bear me three heirs in exchange for freedom,” Kael corrected. “It said nothing about forbidding a mating bond. Sera chose to accept the bond of her own free will.”
“Free will?” Marcus laughed harshly. “She is omega. She has no will of her own. You manipulated her, used alpha dominance to force her compliance. I demand her return so the contract can be properly fulfilled or renegotiated.”
The absolute audacity made my blood boil. He had beaten me, starved me, and sold me like property. And now he stood here claiming concern for my free will?
“No,” I said, my voice cutting through the tension.
Everyone turned to stare at me.
I urged my horse forward, moving ahead of Kael despite his growl of protest. I stopped ten feet from my father, close enough to see the veins bulging in his neck, the fury in his eyes that promised violence.
“I said no, Father. I will not be returned to you. I will not be renegotiated like livestock. I am Luna Queen of the Northern Kingdom, bonded mate to Alpha King Kael Thorne, and you have no authority over me anymore.”
Marcus’s face went purple. “You dare speak to me that way? You worthless”
“Choose your next words carefully, Marcus.” Kael’s dominance crashed down like a physical force. “She is my mate. Insulting her is insulting me. And I am far less patient than she is.”
Victor held up a hand, his expression calculating. “Peace, gentlemen. Perhaps we can resolve this reasonably.” He focused on me with unsettling intensity. “Luna Sera, you say you chose this bond of your own will. Yet you signed a contract stating you wanted freedom. Being bonded to the Alpha King for life seems the opposite of freedom, does it not?”
It was a trap. Whatever I answered would be used against either me or Kael me.
Through the bond, I felt Kael’s warning. Careful, Sera. Victor is trying to create division between us.
I met Victor’s cold gaze steadily. “Freedom is not the absence of bonds, Alpha King Kane. Freedom is the power to choose which bonds you accept. I chose Kael. I chose this pack. I chose to become Luna Queen. That is more freedom than I ever had under my father’s roof.”
“Pretty words,” Marcus snarled. “But you are still just a stupid omega who”
The rest of his words died as Kael’s wolf exploded forward.
One moment Kael was on his horse beside me. Next, he had shifted mid-leap, a massive black wolf the size of a small car launching directly at my father.
Warriors on both sides drew weapons. Victor’s eyes gleamed with triumph.
And I realised with sickening clarity that this had been the plan all along.
Provoke Kael into attacking first. Make him the aggressor. Justify a war that would destroy the Northern Kingdom.
I had seconds to stop it.
Before everything we had built shattered in blood and violence.
