Chapter 165 Terrified servant
Chapter 165 Terrified servant
"What happened to my son?" Lord Preston asked, worry consuming him as he feared he might have lost the only son he had ever had. The servant struggled to catch his breath after running all to Lord Preston’s chambers.
"You need to come and see this right now," the servant replied. Lord Preston and King Alaric exchanged confused glances before following closely behind the servant as he led them back to the hospital room where Kael was being treated.
The moment they rushed into the room, both Lord Preston and the King froze before slowly turning to look at one another. Neither of them could believe what they were seeing.
Sitting upright on the hospital bed was none other than Kael... the very same young man who, only a few hours earlier, had been covered in bruises and severe injuries. Now he looked as though nothing had ever happened. There was no blood, no bruises and no trace of the injuries he had sustained after being trampled by the horse.
"How’s this possible?" Alaric asked as he slowly approached his cousin's bedside. Kael looked healthier than ever.
As soon as the doctor noticed the King's presence, he immediately bowed his head respectfully. For a brief moment, the King and the doctor stared at one another, silently questioning how such a thing could have happened.
"I've never seen anything like this," the doctor admitted. "Only a few hours ago, he had multiple bruises, several broken ribs, and a serious head wound. Now there isn't the slightest sign that any of those injuries ever existed. It seems as though he healed completely within just a few hours."
Alaric knew that Lycans possessed remarkable healing abilities. However, those abilities normally required several days for serious injuries to mend... not a few hours like Kael's had.
"Are you certain this isn't some new kind of transformation... or perhaps our species has somehow adapted?" Alaric asked. The doctor slowly shook his head.
"I don't believe so, my King. It's almost as though a powerful healer walked into this room and cured his injuries." Alaric shifted his attention back to his cousin, who was calmly removing the remaining bandages from his body.
"Kael, do you have any idea how you recovered?" he asked.
"Honestly, my King, I don't know," Kael answered truthfully. "The last thing I remember was seeing the horse charging straight toward me. Before I could get out of the way, it struck me and I fell to the ground. After that... everything went black. The next thing I knew, I woke up here in this room without feeling any pain at all. In fact, it was the doctor who told me that only a few hours ago I had been badly injured because I can't feel a single injury on my body."
The smile on Kael's face was so genuine that it seemed impossible for anyone to wipe it away. However, the moment his eyes landed on his father, Lord Preston, that smile disappeared.
The painful memory of what had happened before the accident came rushing back. His own father had turned his back on him without hesitation and had chosen to stand beside Henry instead.
An uncomfortable silence settled over the room. Before anyone could speak, the doors suddenly opened and Henry walked inside. His eyes immediately swept across everyone present before settling on Kael.
Shock instantly spread across his face.
Only hours earlier, Kael had been bruised, bloodied and injured beyond recognition. Yet the man sitting before him now looked completely healthy... as though the terrible accident had never happened at all. There wasn't a single mark left on his body.
Henry had rushed into the room as soon as he was summoned. He looked around, but for a moment, he could not make sense of what was happening.
“I came as soon as I was called,” Henry said before falling silent.
“You’re shocked, aren’t you?” Alaric asked. “So is everyone else in this room. I simply have to find an explanation for this.” His voice was filled with determination as he made his vow.
“I appreciate all of you wanting to get to the bottom of this,” the doctor said. “I know Kael has healed, but he still needs time to regain some of his strength. I would kindly ask all of you to leave.”
“I think it’s best if I head back to my chambers,” Kael commented quietly. “I do not feel comfortable being here.”
“Certainly... take him back to his chambers,” Alaric instructed. He signaled a few soldiers, who immediately stepped forward to assist Kael. They carefully escorted him back to his chambers while everyone else gradually went their separate ways. Everyone, except Henry.
Henry remained rooted to the spot, unable to shake the questions racing through his mind. He still could not understand how such a miraculous recovery had been possible. Soon, he found himself alone in the hospital room where Kael had been recovering. Just as he turned to leave, he heard the door slowly click open.
A young servant peeked inside. The instant she noticed Henry standing there, her eyes widened in panic before she spun around and ran.
Henry frowned. Whoever she was... she clearly knew something. Using his Lycan speed, he caught up with her within seconds. He grabbed her arm before slamming her firmly against the wall.
“Please... I did nothing. I swear I’m innocent,” the young woman pleaded. Henry quickly covered her mouth to silence her screams before dragging her into an empty room. He shut the door behind them and threw her onto the floor.
The young, skinny servant landed with a painful thud, letting out a frightened yelp.
“I’m the king’s friend,” Henry said coldly. “If you do not tell me the truth, I will have His Majesty hang you. Now tell me... what were you doing in Kael’s room?”
“No... please, sir. Don’t let the king kill me,” she cried. “I promise I did nothing. I only went into the room to see if there was anything I could steal. Then I saw her... she was standing there. Then there was a bright light...” Henry’s expression darkened.
“You saw her?” he interrupted. “Who is this woman you’re talking about? Tell me now... otherwise I’ll have the king execute you.”
“It was the queen,” the servant whispered through trembling lips. “I saw her sneaking into Master Kael’s room. Then there was a burst of light, and Master Kael screamed. I hid before the queen could see me, but I know she did something to him. That’s all I know... I swear it, Master Henry.”
Henry stared at the terrified servant. Judging by the fear in her eyes and the tremble in her voice, he believed she was telling the truth.
“Let no one hear of this,” Henry warned. “This conversation stays between the two of us. If I hear that you’ve spoken of it to anyone else... I will turn the king against you, and he will have no choice but to execute you. Do you understand?”
The servant nodded repeatedly, too frightened to speak. Without another word, Henry turned on his heel and walked out of the room.
