SUBJECTED TO REJECT

LAURA

When Laura arrived home, it was late at night. She wondered what Mrs. Rosie was doing. She was sure the lady was hell worried about her.

If only she knew what she went through just for that day. She slowly walked to the door. She took in a deep breath before stretching her hands towards the door to open it.

She could see that the lights in the living room were switched off. That meant, Mrs. Rosie must be asleep in her room.

She turned the doorknob to know if the door was locked or not and to her greatest shock, the door wasn't locked. Good thing it wasn't, what would she have done?

She slowly walked into the room and shut the door quietly. In order not to make further sounds, she pulled off her shoes and began walking on her toes, all just not to alert Mrs. Rosie.

The living room was dark though, but she could very well see where she was going, thanks to her vampire genes. She was nocturnal like the rest.

When she finally arrived at her room door, she heaved a long sigh. Happy that she was finally safe. Just then, the lights to the passage lit up. Laura was startled out of her wits. She turned her gaze toward the direction of the switch only to find Mrs. Rosie standing next to it with her glasses on and her hands folded to her chest.

"May I know where you are coming from young lady?" Mrs. Rosie asked, her expression was clearly showing that she wasn't in for jokes.

"I uhm...that is-"

"You should take your time and explain word for word to my understanding."

Laura swallowed hard. Not that she did anything wrong out there, but she couldn't understand why she seemed to be trembling when all that is needed for her to do was explain what took her so long.

"What I'm trying to say is that it wasn't my intention to come home late. An unexpected event occurred and that's why I'm home late," Laura explained, hoping Mrs. Rosie will understand and not ask her further questions. But who was she kidding? Mrs. Rosie is smarter than anyone would think.

"An unexpected event? Are you trying to say you've gotten yourself a job?"

At that moment, Laura's head was messed up. Should she say she's gotten a job? Will that help her situation? Goddess help her! She wasn't even sure If she would be able to go back to that place. She needed to cool off and think properly about what to do.

"Laura?" Mrs. Rosie called sharply, thereby snapping her out of her thoughts.

"Y..yes I've gotten a job!" Laura blurted out way before she even knew what she was saying.

"Huh?" That's great news," Mrs. Rosie's expression lightened up a bit. This was insane, she just realized she never should have said that. No one should speak without thinking properly, or else it might lead to a disaster.

What the hell was she thinking?!

"So tell me, what kind of job did you find?"

Laura stared at Mrs. Rosie speechlessly, she wished she could take back her words. Why did she tell her she found a job? This was disaster calling.

"Laura, are you okay?"

Laura snapped out of her thoughts immediately.

"Yes, I'm fine, Mrs. Rosie."

"Were you not told the kind of job you will be doing?

"A...secretary!"

Mrs. Rosie creased her brows in a frown. Laura guess it was time to give her mouth a good slap. Here she was talking about taking back her words, but she was rather pushing forward. There's got to be a way out of it.

"What? Who in her right mind gave you a secretary's job? Or could this company be a swindling company or a local one?"

"Honestly, I don't even know. That's why I plan on rejecting the job."

"Huh? Reject? You just found yourself a job and you plan to reject it already?"

"You said it yourself, they might be a swindling company so it is only right to reject them. I wouldn't want to get involved in any trouble," Laura stated with a serious expression.

"What is the name of this company by the way?" Mrs. Rosie asked, looking quite curious.

This can't possibly be happening to her. Why was Mrs. Rosie so hell-bent on knowing the company? Does the company even matter at that moment? It doesn't matter if she were to be asked.

Even if she was to call the name, Mrs. Rosie wouldn't know. She wasn't the type to care for fashion to know the name of such a Company.

"The company's name is MAGIC MAN, " Laura mentioned confidently.

Mrs. Rosie immediately walked towards her, and her facial expression suddenly changed.

When she got close, she stared intensely at her for reasons she couldn't tell.

"Did you just say, "MAGIC MAN?"

Laura nodded, looking quite surprised at Mrs. Rosie's question. Was there something she was missing?"

"What was your response to their offer?"

"Huh?" Laura was totally in a state of confusion.

"I asked you a question, what was your response?"

"I..I.. told the lady I will be replacing that I would think about it," Laura quickly said.

"Tell them you don't need the job," Mrs. Rosie stated sternly.

"What?" She knew she was to reject the job from the moment she saw those two but Mrs. Rosie was confusing her with what she just said.

"You want me to reject the job for real, Mrs. Rosie?"

"Yes, you must. You have to. It is for your good."

Now that was even more confusing. She can't leave a thing like that. There must be something she was missing.

"Mrs. Rosie, Do you know anything about the company? I mean why do you want me to reject their offer after hearing the name?" Mrs. Rosie took her gaze up at her sharply.

"What do you mean? You were the one who agreed to reject in the first place right?"

Laura was quite confused about Mrs. Rosie's behavior. Why does the old lady act weird lately?

"Okay, I will reject it first thing tomorrow," Laura turned in the direction of her room door and opened it. But just before she was about to go in, she heard Mrs. Rosie repeat the words.

"You must reject their offer, Laura."
