Chapter 142

***JAXON***

The quest to find Kara was becoming almost impossible. I had walked and searched as I tried to get familiar with my surroundings but it seemed nothing was working out.

I was hungry and trying to curb my cravings for blood was a tug of war. In the cold air, their blood smelled so warm and I had to constantly remind myself of where I was. They didn't believe vampires were real and even if they did, they could kill me easily. These people watched books and movies. They seemed to know more about mythology than we did, ourselves.

I had starved for weeks and I was refraining from eating their meal because it gave no nutrients and only made me weak.

I was frustrated, I was scared and I felt alone for the very first time. I missed my son and my people and I wanted to go home but not without her. She was the reason why I embarked on this journey.

“Hi, would you like a hamburger? I've been watching you from afar and you look really tired,” a sweet voice said.

I lifted my head to see a young teenage girl standing before me. She gave me a cordial smile, removed her backpack and sat down beside me. “I've got two, so there's one to spare.”

“Thank you,” I said gratefully as I collected the burger and bit into it, its creamy taste making the orgasms in my body dance for joy. Although it gave no nutrients, it quenched hunger.

She watched me eat, a huge smile plastered on her face which reminded me of Kara. How she smiled when she ate.

“You look like you've been starving,” she muttered as she opened her backpack, “And it seems like I've got more food to spare.’

I licked the cream off the corner of my lips. “Why do you have so much food?”

“We restocked at home and my sister decided she didn't want any of these. I felt it would be foolish to waste it, so I kept them instead,” she explained.

I finished the hamburger. It was nothing like I had ever tasted and it was satisfying. “Thank you. I almost died.”

She giggled, “Yeah, you almost died. Like I said, I've been watching you.”

“Should I be scared?” I inquired.

She shook her head, “It's not every day we see a pretty man around here. Whenever I'm on my way to and from training, I always see you here in this spot. You have gorgeous hair and pretty eyes by the way.”

I smiled and looked away. It wasn't every day I got compliments from young children so it made me a bit awkward. Smiling too much may make me come off as a pervert.

“Thank you for the compliment,” I said.

She shrugged her shoulders and sighed, “I miss home. I miss my sister too.”

I returned my attention to her, “Do you want to share?”

She pulled her knees to her chest and offered me a bottle of banana milk against my protest. “Well, home is where my sister is. She's my only family but she's been distant lately.”

“Distant? How?” I inquired, trying not to sound so probing.

She stared at me sadly. “Ever since she brought this new dude home, she no longer even listens to me. It's like I'm there but I don't feel at home in my home. She spends more time with this guy and he's not even her boyfriend. Just some random guy she met on the street and took home. He makes the decision now and I don't like him.”

I could relate to her feelings but I wanted to communicate with her in a way that does not sound pathetic. But maybe she didn't want my advice. Maybe she just needed someone to listen to like me.

“I miss home too,” I stated, “And home isn't home anymore since she's been away.”

She arched a brow at me, “Who?”

“My mate—” I stopped myself before I went on exposing myself. “My wife.”

“Did she die?” she asked.

I shook my head because really, I didn't know. I didn't know anything about Kara’s well-being and it pained me. “She’s been missing for a year now and our child is growing daily and I'm scared he'll grow up without a mom.”

“Did you report it to the cops? They'd have done something about it. A year is a long time,” she whispered.

I nodded in agreement. “The reason why I didn't involve the cops is because I have no idea if she had moved on.”

“No one will leave their child and husband for a year without any reason,” she said to me. “Do you have a picture of your wife?”

I nodded and pulled out the picture I had been keeping in my pocket. I showed it to her. She smiled and then she glared.

“Oh my God! She looks like Kara Lee. The resemblance is striking. Except, Kara has colored hair and a more captivating body.”

Kara Lee? Captivating body? Colored hair? Now I was interested in knowing.

“Who is Kara Lee?” I asked with piqued interest.

“She’s a celebrity and she's my idol,” she said and started at the picture, “There’s a lot of resemblance in one picture but Kara Lee isn't married and she doesn't have a child either.”

I nodded and replaced the picture in my pocket. I couldn’t tell if it was the similarities between their names or resemblance but now I wanted to know who this person was.

The girl pulled out her phone and scrolled before handing it to me. I saw lots of pictures of Kara Lee and I was convinced she was my Kara but being a celebrity here, people wouldn't believe me as she led a different life.

“They are so alike,” I muttered, breathless.

I was still starting when the girl tapped me on the back and pointed in an excited voice, “There she is.”

I excitedly followed the direction of her finger and saw the face of a woman on the billboard. She seemed to be modelling for a makeup brand and people stopped to look at her. My heart thumped loudly in my chest. The resemblance was striking and I felt a sudden connection to the woman. This was Kara, I could tell nonetheless.

“I'm leaving. It was nice sharing with you stranger,” the girl said, “And I do hope you find your wife. Damn, she looks like my idol and if you report to the cops they'll think she's the one or she's a twin.”

I smiled at her, “It's alright. Thank you. Is there a way I can get through to this model?”

The girl hesitated, “I doubt. Celebrities are tough to come across. Tough.”

I sighed deeply, “Thank you. For the food and the err… drink?”

“I left some behind for you, just in case you go hungry again,” she said and flashed me a pretty smile, “Bye, Mr. Stranger.”

“It's Jaxon,” I called after her but she didn't seem to hear me as she put on her headphones. “Thank you,” I whispered into the air.

I glanced up at the picture and that was when I saw it! The necklace on her neck. This was Kara. I knew she was the one. I almost screamed but I didn't want to appear mad. How was she so different now? How was she a celebrity? There were many more questions I wanted to ask but there was no place to get answers. I got on my feet lazily so I could go back to the motel where I slept. I already had her name in my head. Now I just had to find a way of connecting with her.

“Excuse me, Stranger,” the voice from earlier said.

I turned around, wondering why she was back. “It's Jaxon,” I said.

“Okay, I'm Antra,” she introduced.

“Nice to meet you again, Antra.”

She smiled shyly and looked away.“I don't have any information about your wife, but I do know someone who can help you get through to Kara Lee.”
