Chapter 102

Chapter 102
Mae PoV

Red eyes comes at me again, faster this time, but I’m ready, I’m ready to face him. I’m ready to fucking kill him. He lunges at me, his blade raised to strike my chest, but I don’t give him the chance, I block his strike and knock him backwards, catching him off guard. He looks at me with wide eyes, barely registering the fact that I’m half his size and yet managed to almost knock him onto his arse. Just like he did to me. The irony is not lost on me.

He growls loudly and comes at me running, but he made one big mistake, he left himself wide open for attack. I plunge my blade into his stomach at the last second, and twist it, causing him to gurgle in pain.

But to my surprise, it doesn’t stop him from taking a swing at me, he tries to stab me in the arm, but I’m faster now he’s injured and losing blood. He stumbles back when I pull out the blade, trying to stop the bleeding with one hand. It doesn’t work.

“Now who’s the weak one.” I taunt, a smirk on my lips.

Red eyes growls, but he doesn’t come running at me again, instead he steps back, allowing someone else to take his place. One injury and he’s done. He’s clearly afraid he can’t win against me.

Mihai is getting closer, though I’m not sure how much longer he’ll be, or if they’ll even allow him to get me out of here.

I should never have agreed to this meeting, I should have stayed back at the mansion and refused to come. But I’ve never been a coward and I’ve always been stubborn, I believed that I could bargain for peace. I was wrong. I was very fucking wrong.

The hunter council were never going to let me just walk away from them, and I should have realised that long before tonight. But I didn’t, I was blinded by hope.

Hope can keep someone alive, but it can also be an excuse to be reckless, and that’s exactly what I did, I was stupid. I didn’t listen to the people around me. I should have stayed gone, they couldn’t find me, that’s what they wanted me to come here.

They set a trap for me, and I fell straight into it.

Two more men step forward, they’re big, large muscles and wide shoulders. They’re going to be hard to beat, hell, one of them would be hard enough, but two? I’m fucked.

I’m not weak, I’ve never been weak, but I’m not sure how much longer I can keep this up. I’m exhausted.

“I’d give you a chance to surrender, but I already know what your answer will be.” Says the one on the left, his eyes bright with excitement.

“Smart man.” I say back, my voice just as taunting as his.

I scream in shock when I’m grabbed from behind, the men in front of me were a distraction, and it fucking worked. I never heard the guy coming, and I should have. Lesson one; never let your guard down around the enemy.

I slam my elbow back into his stomach, but he doesn’t let go, he laughs, he fucking laughs at me. I’m furious.

He wraps a hand around my throat and slams me into the ground, pinning me in place with one hand. Just how strong is this guy? This is insane.

I struggle to push him off, my arms aching from the strain, but he doesn’t even flinch, nor does his grip loosen, he just watches me, eyes dark.

I need to think of some way to get out of this, and quickly, before he does something like knock me out. If I lose consciousness, it’s all over for me. They’ll drag me back to the confines of the councils hideout and I’ll never see the light of day again.

“Get off!” I shout, frustrated.

I see Mihai’s head in the crowd and excitement floods through me, but he’s still locked in a fight and I’m on my own. I need to get out of this myself, whether I like it or not, I’m alone.

No one can help me.

The guy pinning me doesn’t react to my words, instead he pulls a needle out of his pocket and bites the cap off, my heart beating so fast I swear it might burst from my chest.

Now I’m afraid, whatever is in that syringe, I can’t let him inject me with it.

But fuck, he’s so strong, much stronger than me. He has to be a Nati, I’m certain of it. Almost. There’s no way he’s this strong naturally, especially when he has no muscle on him.

He smiles down at me, pressing the needle against my neck, “you’re strong, but not strong enough.” He says.

If the council have men like this in their side, why do they need me?

Before I can even think about responding, he plunges the needle into my neck and injects me with the clear liquid, and fuck, it burns. It hurts more than anything I’ve ever felt before.

My eyes blur, and my arms go limp, but I don’t lose focus. I don’t pass out, and that surprises me.

“Don’t worry.” The man says softly, “you won’t die, but when this reaches your bloodstream, you’ll wish you had.”

His words sound far away, but I still hear him loud and clear. What the fuck has he given me?

What is it going to do to my body?

I try to speak, but words fail me. I can’t seem to get my body to cooperate and then comes the pain, blinding, agonising pain that makes me unable to breathe.

What the fuck?

I scream, I scream so loud my throat burns, and my body curls in on itself. I try to stand, but my legs won’t work, and neither will my arms.

My vision is spotty and I can’t breathe, this isn’t good, whatever this is, it feels like I’m dying. I try to concentrate on getting my breathing under control, but ever time I’m close, the pain comes back, stealing what little control I manage to gain over myself.

Darkness dances across my vision, and I welcome it. I need release from the pain, and I need it now.

I close my eyes, and sink into the dirt.

I’m lost, and I have a feeling it’s about to get a lot worse.
