Chapter 22 Their voices

Chapter 22 Their voices
I walked out of the classroom, my bag feeling heavier than it actually was. Every step echoed in the hallway, but not because the floors were loud—because I could feel the weight of all the eyes on me.

Whispers followed me almost immediately.

“She actually looked at him like that?”

“Why is she even sitting near him?”

“Did you see her hands? So nervous around him!”

I tightened my grip on my bag strap, trying to ignore them. Just keep walking. Don’t look back. Don’t care. But it was impossible. I could feel the stares, hear the quiet snickers, see the sideways glances from girls I barely knew. Cole’s name seemed to hang in the air wherever I went, like a shadow trailing me. And the worst part? I didn’t just feel exposed to them. I felt exposed to him.

I kept my eyes on the floor, pretending not to notice when he appeared a few steps behind me. My stomach flipped. He was calm, composed, his bag slung over one shoulder as usual. No teasing smile. No cold glance. Just him, walking silently, matching my pace without saying a word.

Every now and then, my eyes flicked up, just for a fraction of a second, and I caught him looking at me. Not staring. Not judging. Just… watching. It made my chest tighten, made my thoughts stumble. Why did it feel like every little look from him carried weight?

The whispers around us grew louder as we reached the main hallway. People were starting to notice. Some of the girls huddled together, pointing subtly. I could hear snippets.

“Did you see her with his bag this morning?”

“Does he even know she’s new?”

“She’s acting so casual… like she belongs.”

I wanted to sink into the floor and disappear. But at the same time, I couldn’t. Something about his calm, silent presence behind me made me stand taller. I don’t need to disappear. I’m not afraid.

But the closer we got to the main entrance, the heavier the stares became. I could feel the tension, the unspoken questions. “Why is she walking with Cole Hayes?” “What’s going on between them?” “Is she trying to get close?”

My throat tightened, and my palms were slick with sweat again. My heartbeat thundered so loudly, I thought he might hear it. And maybe he did. Because as we approached the front doors, he slowed slightly, just enough that our shoulders brushed. My breath caught.

He didn’t speak. Not immediately. But then, quietly, almost in a whisper meant only for me, he said, “Careful.”

I froze. “Careful?”

He glanced at me, just the tiniest flicker of concern in his eyes, and said softly, “There are people who will try to make this difficult for you. Don’t let them see you’re nervous.”

I swallowed hard, my cheeks burning. His words weren’t loud, weren’t for anyone else, but they carried a weight I hadn’t expected. He wasn’t mocking me. He wasn’t teasing me. He was… protecting me. In his own way.

I nodded, almost imperceptibly, trying to calm the storm of thoughts in my head. Protecting me…? Why? My stomach twisted. My mind raced. I wasn’t used to this. Not with anyone, let alone him—the cold, untouchable Cole Hayes.

We reached the car. His car. The same one from before, sleek and black, polished to a shine. I felt a flicker of hesitation. The car felt like another world—a world I wasn’t sure I belonged in.

Cole opened the door for me, his hand steady, firm. “Get in,” he said simply, almost like a command. But this time, there was no teasing in his voice. No smirk. Just… seriousness.

I slid into the seat, my hands fidgeting in my lap, trying not to make a sound. I could feel his eyes on me, calm, intense, and my stomach did a strange flip. I could feel the tension building between us—not physical, not romantic yet, but something sharp and electric.

As he closed the door and slid into the driver’s seat, the whispers and stares from the school faded behind me. The quiet hum of the engine filled the space, and for a moment, it was just the two of us.

I realized then—my chest tight, my heart hammering—I didn’t know what this was. Fear? Excitement? Respect? Attraction? Admiration? Or all of it at once?

And the strangest part? I didn’t want to push him away. Not yet.

I wanted to see where this went, even if it terrified me.

The drive felt… unreal. Every turn, every hum of the engine, made my mind spin. I kept my hands folded tightly in my lap, glancing at Cole only when I thought he wouldn’t notice. But of course, I knew he always noticed. Always.

His hands were steady on the wheel, his jaw set, his expression unreadable. Not a single smirk, not a teasing comment, not a glance toward the rearview mirror at me. He was cold. Formal. Focused. And it made my heart beat faster.

The closer we got to the school, the heavier the pit in my stomach grew. I could already imagine the whispers, the sideways glances, the girls pointing. They would all see me stepping out of his car. Their crush. The untouchable Cole Hayes. And there I would be… beside him.

I swallowed hard and tried to steady my breathing. Don’t let them see you’re scared. Don’t let him see you’re scared.

We pulled up in front of the gates, and as soon as the car slowed, I could feel the collective gasp from the students around. I could hear snippets of conversations even before I opened the door:

“Is that… her?”

“She’s… in his car?”

“What’s going on?”

I froze for a moment, my fingers gripping the seat. My stomach twisted. I wanted to disappear. I wanted to shrink.

Then, Cole’s voice, low and calm, barely above a whisper, cut through my panic.

“Stay close.”

I nodded, though my cheeks were burning. Close? I kept close, stepping out carefully, my bag clutched tightly. And there he was, beside me, carrying his own bag, the picture of control, his presence making the eyes on us impossible to ignore.

Girls around us whispered, laughed softly, nudged each other. I felt the heat of embarrassment creep up my neck. Some of them were glaring, some were whispering, some were even smirking. Of course they are. He’s their star. And I’m just… me.

Cole didn’t falter. Not once. He didn’t smile to anyone, didn’t wave, didn’t acknowledge them. He just walked, silent, letting the stares bounce off him. And yet… somehow… the fact that he was walking beside me, not ignoring me, not pushing me aside, felt like a small, quiet victory.

One of the girls, bold enough to step forward, gave me a pointed glance. “Don’t think just because you’re with him, you belong here,” she hissed.

I clenched my jaw but kept walking, letting my eyes stay straight ahead. I belong wherever I stand. I’m not afraid.

Cole’s presence behind me, solid and steady, gave me courage I didn’t even realize I had. The adrenaline from the drive, the weight of the stares, the thrill of being near him—it all combined into this strange, electrifying mix.

As we entered the school, the whispers followed us through the hallways. Some students stepped aside, staring as we passed. Some girls whispered to each other, glancing in my direction. And I realized… this was more than just embarrassment. This was power. I survived being seen with him. I survived being in his presence.

We reached our lockers, and I fumbled slightly with my combination. My hands were shaking—not from fear, but from nerves, from the intensity of being so close to him, and from the knowledge that everyone was watching.

Cole stepped slightly behind me, his shoulder brushing mine ever so slightly. Not a touch, not a hold—but close enough that I felt it, enough that it made my heart skip. I wanted to glance up, to see his face, to see if he noticed, but I forced my eyes back on my locker.

“You okay?” he asked softly, his voice low, meant only for me.

I swallowed hard, my throat tight. “I… I’m fine,” I said, though my voice betrayed the slightest tremor.

He didn’t say anything else, just adjusted his stance slightly, hands in his pockets, letting me finish. The subtle silence between us was heavy, but safe. He wasn’t pushing. He wasn’t teasing. He wasn’t demanding anything. He was… letting me exist beside him, and it was overwhelming.

Finally, I slung my bag over my shoulder and turned, walking toward the classroom. I could feel him behind me the whole way, his pace matching mine. And though no one could see it, I felt a quiet intimacy in the rhythm of our steps, the silent agreement of proximity.

By the time we reached class, my mind was buzzing, heart racing, and cheeks still flushed. I realized I wasn’t just nervous about the whispers. I wasn’t just nervous about the girls or the stares. I was nervous about him. About what he thought. About what he expected. About what I was starting to feel…

And that terrified me more than anything.
