Chapter 153 The Horde
Chapter 153 The Horde
OPHELIA’S POV
The clicking grows louder.
It comes from every direction at once precise, rhythmic, and completely wrong. The sound of metal joints grinding against each other. Heavy, weighted steps that do not belong to any living wolf.
“Move!” Kai shouts.
They pour out of the fog like something dragged straight out of a nightmare. Cybernetic hybrids. Patches of dark fur fused with cold metal plating. Eyes glowing a uniform, sickly blue. Jaws reinforced with steel. The first one lunges straight at Eve. She drops and rolls, blades flashing in the dim light, and severs its leg clean at the joint. Sparks burst from the wound and scatter across the wet ground.
Kai does not hesitate. His black wolf surges forward, claws tearing through plating and the artificial muscle beneath with brutal force. The sound is ugly metal screeching, something wet and chemical spilling onto the leaves. Vai’s rage crashes through our bond so violently I nearly choke on it.
Seraphina drops to one knee and presses both hands into the soaked earth. Electricity arcs upward through the fog in sharp white veins, slamming into three hybrids at once. Their systems short out with crackling pops. The air fills with the sharp smell of ozone and burning wires.
I keep Luna pressed tightly against my chest, staying behind Kai’s larger form, but one of the machines still breaks through. I throw every ounce of resonance I have at it. The force sends it flying backward into a tree hard enough to split the trunk.
“Left side!” Damien calls out. He moves like he already knows where the next strike will come from. The residual serum still in his blood lets him sense their coordination the same way I can feel pack intent.
We are holding barely when one of the larger units suddenly stops fighting and plants itself in the center of the clearing. A panel on its chest slides open. Blue light flares.
A hologram blooms above it in the fog.
Shadowfang.
The pack house is under attack. Smoke rises from the east wing. Our bodies lie scattered across the courtyard: the image shifts and zooms into the lower cells.
Cassie is on her knees behind the bars. Her face is bloodied, but her eyes are still defiant. A hooded figure stands over her, one hand gripping the pack’s alpha seal like a trophy.
My blood turns cold.
“Cassie—”
The hologram cuts out. The wolf turns its glowing eyes toward me and charges. Kai meets it head-on, driving it into the dirt with a snarl that shakes the surrounding trees.
When the last hybrid finally falls, the clearing is littered with sparking metal and the heavy scent of blood and burnt wiring. My arms are trembling. Luna remains quiet against me, but her small body is tense, as if she felt every second of it.
I turn to the others, my voice raw.
“We have to go back. Now. They’re going to kill her.”
Damien steps in front of me. “If we go back, Morwen wins. She wants you divided. She wants you running in circles while she finishes whatever she’s building in that citadel.”
“She’s my family.”
“So is every wolf carrying the serum,” he answers, quieter this time. “The only way to free Cassie and the rest of them is to end Morwen. You know that.”
I hate that he is right.
The weight of it settles across my shoulders like something physical. Leadership is not just the mark or the power. It is choosing who you might have to lose to save the rest. My stomach twists. I look down at Luna, then at Kai still breathing hard, then at Eve and Seraphina waiting for my decision.
Something shifts inside my chest.
Heat spreads under my skin clean, bright, and steady. My alpha aura rises without me forcing it, turning a brilliant gold that cuts through the fog. The others feel it. Even the trees seem to go still for a moment.
Luna stirs. A soft pulse of power moves from her into me, and with it comes a clear image: a narrow valley path hidden behind a waterfall of black stone. A side entrance into the Citadel. Unwatched.
I open my mouth to tell them.
The ground beneath us shudders.
A deep cracking sound runs through the earth. Roots tear. Stone splits.
“Move” Kai begins.
The forest floor gives way under him and Damien like a trapdoor. Both of them drop into sudden darkness with a shout. Eve grabs my arm. Seraphina curses. When the dust and fog clear, only a wide, jagged hole remains.
Kai and Damien are gone.
