Chapter 143 The curse

Chapter 143 The curse

Kai's POV.

Morwen didn't look ancient, but young and beautiful. Her long hair fell in loose strands over her shoulders, her jade-green eyes the same as Ophelia's.

“Ophelia!” She uttered with a smile.

Ophelia froze beside me, our eyes fixed on her who slowly rose from her throne.

“My great-great granddaughter!”

“You…” Ophelia cut herself off, her eyes widening at her.

“You finally came to me.” Morwen’s lips curved in a smile.

“What do you want?” Ophelia asked.

“I want what has always belonged to my bloodline.” Morwen's smile deepened.

“I belong to myself.” Ophelia responded to her.

“You sound exactly like your mother.” Morwen chuckled softly.

“Don't mention her.” Ophelia's face hardened.

“Why?” Morwen asked calmly. “I mean, she was offered the same opportunity.” She added, climbing down from her throne.

Ophelia's breathing became strained…

“Become my heir.” Morwen said to her.

“What?!!!” Ophelia exclaimed.

“Come to me, my child. It is time you accept the blood that runs through your veins, and the power that comes with it.” Morwen parted her arms slightly, expecting Ophelia to approach her.

I quickly shook my head and spoke on her behalf, “There’s no way she'll become yours.”

Morwen didn't even look at me or the others. She kept her eyes on Ophelia alone. My body went stiff, and when I looked at Ophelia, I saw how pale her face had become. Her expression also made it clear that Morwen's words had given her something to think about.

I quickly reached for her hand, “Don't listen to her.”

She looked at me…

Then I realized how tempting the offer was. Even so, she could still say no and choose to walk away if she wants to.

Morwen watched her closely, a cruel smile forming on her lips, “There is something else you should know. I already possess a sample of Luna's blood, taken months ago by a sleeper agent in Shadowfang.” She said.

“A sleeper agent?” Eve's eyes widened.

Morwen nodded, “The canister you recovered was never the only one. Your daughter's blood is already mine, Ophelia.”

Ophelia gently slipped her hand from mine to step forward, “I am not your heir.” She stared into Morwen's eyes before speaking.

The moment Morwen stopped smiling, the temperature in the chamber suddenly dropped, “Then get ready to suffer the same fate your mother suffered. Be prepared to die like her.” Her jade-green eyes hardened.

Ophelia's POV.
I barely had time to react when Morwen disappeared from where she stood.

“Ophelia!” Kai shouted my name.

Just so, a powerful force struck us. I was thrown backward, but Kai reached me before I could hit the ground. He quickly pulled me to himself to shield me from the impact.

“Kai…” I uttered his name, trying to check if he was alright when Morwen appeared in front of us again.

She moved too fast. And Kai, he had only just raised his arm when she attacked him in the chest. He was thrown several feet through the air and slammed into the stone wall in a way that made me scream out his name, “Kai!!!”

He hit the ground hard, groaning in pain. I rushed toward him, but Morwen appeared in my path.

“You should have accepted my offer.” She stared down at me.

I stared up at her from my kneeling position close to Kai, “Leave my family alone.”

“You have every right to fight for them if you want to.” She smiled coldly.

Damien suddenly attacked from the other side, his weapon in motion towards her who quickly shielded herself with one hand. Eve tried to attack her too, while Seraphina moved behind her to stay out of sight.

The three of them surrounded Morwen, but she reacted even faster this time. She struck Damien first and made him stumble backward. Eve tried to avoid her next attack, but she caught her by the arm and threw her aside. As Seraphina tried to reach her too, she knocked her off her feet.

I stared at Morwen in shock, realizing that none of us could match her energy.

She shifted her attention back to me, “This is what your refusal has caused. I am so angry right now.” She said, her jade-green eyes turning red.

“No!” I shook my head and rose, slowly backing away from her who was approaching me.

She soon pinned me with her dangerous powers, making it impossible for me to move.

I watched her walk toward me.

By the time she came closer to me, she raised her finger to touch my forehead with it. I gasped, a strange sensation spreading through my body that made it cold and hot at the same time.

Everything suddenly changed, and I found myself in a completely different place. The chamber was no longer dark or broken, but grand and beautiful. The vast hall was packed with hybrids, their eyes glowing with supernatural powers. Then my gaze fell on Kai, kneeling before me.

“Kai?!!”

My heart seemed to stop beating.

He raised his head to look at me, his eyes empty of love and filled with nothing but obedience. I shifted my attention away from him to look at my children.

They were older now, strong and powerful. None of them smiled, weapons strapped to their bodies as they stood among an army of hybrids.

They had become warriors and weapons of conquest.

“No one will ever hurt them again.” A voice whispered inside my head. “They'll be safe. No one will hunt your family. No one will threaten your children. Ophelia, you will never lose anyone again.” The voice continued.

For one dangerous second, I wanted to believe it.

What woman wouldn't want a world where her family would never be harmed again?

“No!” I refused.

Then my vision shifted. I saw my mother, Celeste, standing in the same chamber years ago. She looked younger, yet I clearly saw the fear in her eyes.

Morwen stood before my mother, who moved toward her throne to retrieve something small from the under.

I gasped, dropping to my knees as the vision shattered. Morwen stood before me with a changed expression, “No matter how hard you try, your true nature will always find you. You cannot escape what you are.” She said to me,

“Maybe!” I slowly lifted my head to look up at her. “But I can choose what I become.” I forced myself back on my feet.

Something in me stirred. It felt ancient, older than anything I had ever felt before. My entire body shook, then I noticed a strange silver light appear on my skin.

Morwen's eyes widened at me, “What are you doing?”

How could she ask me that, when I had no idea what was happening to me either?

The silver light exploded from my body before I could blink.

“No!!!” Morwen screamed as its binding glow filled the chamber. “How dare you?!!!”

The walls started to shake violently, stone cracking above us. The ground under my feet split apart, pieces of the ancient temple starting to crash down around us.

Had I just awakened something I didn't understand?
