Chapter 65 67
Chapter 65 67
LARA PARKER.
I almost could not believe the ridiculousness of the situation really, the words hanging in the air between us. I stood there, tightening my grip on the golf club so hard that my knuckles had gone white, staring at Caleb as though he had grown a second head and maybe, he really had.
That was the only explanation to this stunt of his really. Only it could truly justify the words his lips had just sputtered.
“You want me back.” I repeated, testing each word, sounding foreign against my lips. It was not a question though, it was statement, trying to make sure I did in fact hear him right.
His response was instant, with no second thoughts whatsoever, “I do,” It was how he said it really, shameless had evaded him entirely it appears. He took a step in my direction and instinctively, I took a step back. The act did not go unnoticed by him, but of course, it did not stop him. His brow furrowed slightly, before he wnet on to add. “Lara, we have been together for so long. I have always been the only one you had since your parents passed. What we had was real, surely, you can not bring yourself to let it all go down the drain, can you?”
“I thought the same as well.” I bite back, my tone harsh. “But that was until you decided to go and screw your step sister, who is dead by the way, whose funeral we both just left.” I took in a sharp breath, feeling anger coursing through my veins. “Just how shameless can you be, Caleb? Doing this straight after her funeral. That is low, even for you.”
I did not realize he could stoop this low really, but which each second he spends here, he was only proving to me just how low he could stoop truly.
He exhaled a breath through his nose. “It was…complicated.” I held back a scoff at the use of the word, “It was a moment of weakness, I admit. Dixie was just my moment of weakness and everyone has that. But now, now, she is gone.” He took a step closer to me, and my eyes narrowed even more but it did not stop him. “She is no longer here, Lara. No one can get in between us now. We can get back to how we were.”
“Get back to how we were?” I let out a short, hollow laugh that held no amusement whatsoever. “Do you really believe that is possible?” I am not even considering it, I just wanted to see how far he was willing to go really.
His expression flickered then, an expression passing behind his eyes that I could not quite read. “Yes. You love me, and I love you—”
“You do not love me, Caleb.” I shook my head, cutting him off. “You love no one but yourself, and I most certainly have no feelings for you whatsoever—”
“You are lying!” He cut me off, his voice raising. A moment of silence passed as he realized what he had done, making him tilt his head up as he released a few breaths to calm himself, his shoulders raising and then falling. Running a hand down his face, I could hear his loud exhale, before gathering his thoughts and turning to face me again. “Lara, baby…” He moved towards me again, almost closing the distance between us.
I raised the golf club slightly, a warning and a reminder that it was still in my hand.
He stopped, face to face with it, no doubt remembering what happened at the hockey rink the last time before he swallowed a lump. Raising his palms up, his eyes found mine again. “I made a mistake with Dixie, and I am sorry for that. But, she is gone now, and no one will ever get between us again. Besides,” He paused, and I could swear the corner of his lips had tilted upwards slightly when he added. “The family’s assets now all belong to me. I can take care of you now. This apartment,” He looked around, in that same judgmental look he had always given it here, though did not dwell on it. “I can get it for you now. You no longer have to work your ass off at work. I can give you the life you want.”
I shook my head, lips pressed into a thin line. “I want nothing from you, Caleb,” I said, my voice cold. “And I want nothing to do with you ever again. If this is what you came here for, you might as well leave because you will be disappointed.”
His expression changed very quickly, something extremely cold taking over as his eyes narrowed, the soft one he was trying to lull me back to him disappearing. “Is this because you are fucking Wilde now?” He hissed, his gaze and tone harsh. “Is that why you are treating me like this now?”
My eyes narrowed even more if possible. “This has nothing to do with him.”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Lara, open your damn eyes and stop being hypocritical!” He hissed, throwing his arm out. “Listen to me, I am pretty sure you know it as well, but Wilde is a renowned rake. Everyone knows that the amount of women he has slept with are probably more than the number of shirts he has. You are giving me shit for being with Dixie but then you go and be with the man that has slept with half of New York.”
“And I told you this was not about him,” I gritted out, not wanting him to try and change the topic. “This is about our relationship. And at least, even if he is, at least he did not cheat on me while we are together. And even if he does, so what? You said it yourself, everyone has a moment of weakness.” I had said the words in a fit of rage really without thinking it over.
I am just determined to say anything that would get this man to leave me alone, but it is proving to be hard because my words only pushed him more.
“Can you even hear yourself?” He shook his head in disbelief. “You are being so hypocritical right now! So you can make excuses for him but you will not forgive me for this one mishap?”
“I can overlook his because there are no feelings attached.” This time around, my words were earnest. “Because thanks to you, I know better than to be attached to any man. What he does is none of my concern. What we have is just physical at the end of the day.”
Caleb scoffed as he held my gaze, almost as if he could not believe his ears that I had said that. “Fine.” He mumbled, and in a swift move, he had snatched the golf club begore I could realize what was happening and threw it away, closing the distance between us. “Since it is just physical, we can be like that too.” His hands gripped my shoulder, and pulled me flush against his arm chest.
I fought against his hold, wiggling and trying to get myself free but he was stronger than I am. I screamed, thrashing around. “CALEB, LET ME GO!” Tears welled in my eyes, my body shaking vigorously.
But he held me firmly, barely leaving any room for me to move as he buried his face in my neck, leaving wet sloppy kisses that made me feel disgusted with myself. His hands fumbled with the zipper of my dress, taking a hold of it and pulling down. I felt my heart jump in my throat, my breathing becoming heavy.
However, before he could fully bring the zipper down, he was suddenly yanked away from me and throw away as if he weighed nothing. Wide eyed, my eyes moved to the person responsible, and even though he stood shielding me with his back to me, I could recognize that figure anywhere.
Killian.
Caleb landed with a crash as he hit the wall behind him, his body falling on the ground with a sickening crack that made goosebumps rise on my skin, but I had no time to focus on that as Killian closed the distance between them, pouncing on the man.
It was brutal. I had never seen a sight as brutal as the one in front of me.
Killian’s fist moved repeatedly at a speed I can barely catch up to, colliding with caleb’s face and head, whichever he could. And when my eyes fell on what was coating his fist, I felt the suffocating feeling from when I arrived in the apartment returning as Caleb’s blood coated his fist and the ground.
I felt myself becoming light headed, the tears slipping past my eyes. I parted my lips to speak, but it felt as though the world was spinning right beneath my feet. I could only whisper a statement that I doubt he heard.
“Stop…Killian don’t…”
