Chapter 46 Chapter 46

Chapter 46 Chapter 46
Sable’s POV

Judgment.
The word sat heavily in my chest as the new pack stepped into the clearing.
Unlike the wild ones from before, these wolves moved like one body.
They were disciplined, sharp, and controlled. Every step they took matched.
Every breath felt deliberate.
And the man walking at the front—
He felt like a storm held together by sheer force.
He was tall, had a broad chest, and a cold expression.
His silver-streaked black hair moved with the wind, and his dark eyes swept over the clearing like blades. They didn't show curiosity or someone impressed; rather, they were filled with measuring, like calculating.
Every wolf around him lowered their heads slightly, not in fear but in respect.
Power rolled off him in waves.
Old power.
The kind of power that didn’t need to prove itself.
Leonidas stiffened beside me, Kael’s posture tightened, and even Caius, who rarely looked unsettled—
went completely still.
That told me enough.
"Who is he?" I whispered.
Caius answered without taking his eyes off the man.
"Malrik Thorn."
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way everyone reacted to it?
That meant everything.
Leonidas’s jaw tightened.
"The High Alpha."
I looked at him.
"The what?"
"The strongest Alpha among all the united packs,"
Zander said quietly.
"For centuries."
Great.
Just great.
Malrik stopped several feet away. His pack spread out behind him in perfect formation.
There was no wasted movement.
No chaos.
Only order.
His eyes landed on me and stayed there.
It felt like being pinned in place.
Not physically but mentally.
Like he was peeling through every layer of me.
"So," he said.
His voice was deep.
Steady.
"You’re the Queen."
It was not a question but a statement.
I straightened my shoulders.
"That depends on who’s asking."
Kael muttered under his breath.
"Bold."
Zander smirked.
Malrik’s expression didn’t change.
But I saw it—
the smallest flicker of amusement.
"Good," he said.
"I dislike weak rulers."
Caius stepped slightly in front of me protectively.
"What do you want?"
Malrik didn’t look at him.
His attention stayed on me.
"To see. To judge. To decide."
I frowned.
"Decide what?"
His gaze sharpened.
"If you’re worthy."
My chest tightened.
And immediately—
I hated him.
Not because he was strong but because he walked in here like my existence needed his approval.
"I’m not here to be approved by you."
That made some of the wolves behind him shift uneasily.
But Malrik?
He smiled, though it barely showed.
Interesting.
“You misunderstand,” he said.
"This isn’t about approval."
His eyes darkened.
"It’s about survival."
Leonidas stepped forward.
"If this is a challenge, then challenge me."
Malrik finally looked at him.
And the air between them changed instantly.
It was heavy, hostile, and one of recognition.
"I know you," Malrik said.
Leonidas’s voice was cold.
"Then you know I don’t kneel."
Malrik’s smile widened slightly.
"Yes."
A pause.
"That’s why you’re dangerous."
The dragon moved behind us, massive wings shifting.
"The Queen has already chosen her path."
Malrik glanced toward it.
"And now I’m here to test if that path can hold."
Kael scoffed.
"Why does everyone keep testing her?"
"Because power without trial is weakness," Malrik said.
I folded my arms.
"And who tested you?"
That—
That got his attention.
For the first time, his eyes fully focused on me.
Sharp and piercing.
"Everyone."
The answer was simple.
Honest.
And somehow—
That made him more dangerous.
"I didn’t come to fight," he continued.
"But I did come for truth."
Caius’s voice dropped.
"What truth?"
Malrik looked at me.
"What kind of Queen you’ll become."
The wind picked up.
The clearing felt tighter, smaller somehow.
Like the world was narrowing to this moment.
And then, as Malrik took one step forward, power exploded outward from him.
The force of it hit like a wall. Several wolves behind me stumbled.
Kael cursed.
Leonidas growled.
My breath caught.
Because this wasn’t just Alpha energy.
It was something overwhelming.
Ancient.
Brutal.
A challenge.
Not physical but instinctual, making me want to kneel.
That pressure pressed against me hard.
Against my bones, my lungs, and my heartbeat.
My body trembled not from fear but from resistance.
He was testing me.
Seeing if I would fold.
And for one terrifying second—
I almost did.
Then—
Something inside me answered.
Silver light burst beneath my skin.
Warm.
Strong.
Mine.
The pressure cracked and then broke.
The force around me exploded outward, pushing against Malrik’s power.
The clearing shook as a shockwave blasted through the trees.
There was total silence.
Malrik stared at me.
And for the first time—
His expression changed.
Not to that of disappointment but of respect.
Interesting.
Leonidas exhaled beside me.
Kael laughed under his breath.
"Well. That answered that."
But Malrik wasn’t done.
He stepped closer.
"You resisted."
"Yes."
"Most wouldn’t."
"I’m not most."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"No."
He looked almost thoughtful now.
Then—
"Fight me."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
Leonidas moved instantly.
"No."
Malrik ignored him while his eyes stayed on me.
"Fight me."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"To prove it."
Caius stepped forward.
"She doesn’t need to prove anything."
Malrik’s voice hardened.
"She does."
The wolves behind him remained silent.
They were watching, waiting.
This clearly wasn’t unusual.
Kael growled.
"This is ridiculous."
"No," Malrik said.
"This is law."
The dragon’s voice thundered.
"The old law."
Malrik didn’t flinch.
"The law that kept order."
I looked between them.
And suddenly understood.
This wasn’t just about me.
This was about what I represented.
Change.
And Malrik?
He was the wall standing against it.
If I refused, I would look weak, and if I accepted—
I played by his rules.
Trap.
Clever trap.
Zander smiled faintly.
"He boxed you well."
I shot him a glare.
Not helping.
Leonidas stepped closer.
"Don’t do it."
"Why?"
"Because he wants to force your hand."
Caius nodded.
"And because he’s stronger."
Malrik smiled slightly.
"Honest."
Kael folded his arms.
"So what now?"
I inhaled slowly.
I was thinking and also feeling the weight.
No.
I stepped forward.
But not into a fighting stance.
Into stillness.
"I won’t fight you."
Leonidas looked relieved.
Caius looked confused.
Malrik’s eyes darkened.
"Then you yield."
"No."
I met his gaze fully.
"I refuse the test."
His jaw tightened.
"That is yielding."
"No," I said calmly.
"That’s choosing."
The wolves behind him murmured.
They felt uneasy and confused because that answer—
It broke the expected pattern.
Malrik stared at me.
"You think choice makes you strong?"
"No," I said.
"I think knowing when not to fight does."
Silence.
Heavy.
Tense.
And then—
Malrik moved.
Fast.
Faster than I expected.
His hand shot toward me not to kill me but to force me into fighting back.
But before he reached me—
Leonidas intercepted him.
Their collision shook the clearing.
Hard.
The ground cracked beneath them.
Leonidas shoved him back, growling violently.
"Touch her again and I rip your throat out."
Malrik smiled.
Actually smiled.
"There you are."
Realization hit.
This wasn’t about me.
Not entirely.
It was about Leonidas too.
He was testing him, provoking him, and also measuring him.
Malrik stepped back slightly.
"You’d die for her."
Leonidas didn’t hesitate.
"Yes."
The honesty of that answer struck something inside me.
Hard.
Too hard.
Malrik’s gaze shifted between us.
And he understood something.
Something dangerous.
The bond.
The connection.
The weakness.
Or strength.
Depends on how you see it.
Then—
The dragon growled low.
A warning.
I turned sharply.
Because something had changed.
The forest behind Malrik’s pack–
Moved.
There were too many shadows, too many eyes.
And then the same wild ones from before stepped out again.
Only this time they weren’t alone.
Behind them....
Something larger emerged.
It was not wolf, not human, was also not a dragon.
Something twisted.
Ancient.
Wrong.
Its body bent unnaturally, black veins glowing under pale skin.
Its eyes were silver.
Like mine.
My blood went cold.
The dragon’s voice shook the clearing.
"Impossible."
Malrik turned sharply, and for the first time, he looked genuinely alarmed.
"What is that?"
The creature smiled.
And when it spoke—
Its voice echoed inside my head.
Not aloud but inside.
"At last...... the Queen wakes."
My breath stopped.
Because I knew without understanding how—
That thing knew me.
And worse—
It had been waiting.
