Epilogue
Jasmine stood beside the bed, the open suitcase before her. Random clothes scattered across the room in disarray. Her fingers moved slowly, folding shirts with a kind of reflection that hinted at her reluctance to leave.
Elijah's voice called out from the other room, "Are you ready?"
A simple question, but one that seemed to amplify the anxiety she was feeling. She let out a heavy sigh. Then turned around to glance at the room as if hoping the walls would offer some comfort.
"Just a minute.", she muttered before calling out to anyone within earshot, "Can someone come grab my bag?"
Her eyes lingered on the suitcase, the reality of leaving settling in her chest like a stone.
As she gazed at the items she had packed, a wave of sadness washed over her. The sadness seemed to seep through every corner of her mind, yet she didn’t rush to shake it off. She let herself feel the raw emotion of it.
The quiet ache that was tangled in the goodbye.
For a moment, time seemed to slow. She took in the silence, allowing herself the space to process what this departure meant. She was moving, but in this moment, she her mind was still. Still enough to accept the bittersweet truth that the world outside beckoned her to move forward.
Within moments, Damien and Cameron appeared at the top of the stairs. Both ready to assist her. Damien quickly grabbed her suitcase. Nodding as he swung it effortlessly onto his shoulder, while Cameron offered his arm to help her down the stairs.
Jasmine gave a small smile and thanked them.
As they made their way down the stairs, Jasmine couldn't help but think back to the first time she'd seen Elijah in this house. It had been over a year ago when she'd first accepted a too good to be true job offer.
That moment felt like it belonged to someone else, and yet it had been such a pivotal part of their journey.
Now, after everything they'd been through… after the struggle, the fight, and their love… the house he had once shared with Clara was being sold. The final chapter of that part of her life was closing, and she was ready to move on.
Once downstairs, she paused in the hallway. Her hand running across the spot on the wall where the frames had once hung. The empty space left a strange ache in her heart. The house had been remodeled for her, but it still housed bad memories. It was the place where she’d discovered a new world of love and strength.
But now, it was just a house. Nothing more, nothing less.
She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, willing herself not to get lost in nostalgia. She had a new chapter ahead of her. A chapter full of hope, promise, and the future she'd always dreamed of.
She and Elijah were building something beautiful together. Something more lasting than any building could hold.
The buzz of her phone interrupted her thoughts.
Pulling it from her pocket, she saw a notification from the HireMe app.
\[Have a baby with me - priceless\]
Jasmine chuckled to herself. She shook her head at the absurdity of it all. She rubbed her round belly absentmindedly as she waddled toward the front door.
Before she could open it, the door swung wide open. In walked Benjamin, his usual boisterous self.
"Here's Uncle Benji!", he yelled.
His arms outstretched as he entered. Elijah walked over to Benjamin and gave him a playful fist bump.
“Don’t forget Auntie Maya, you bum.”, Maya teased as she entered the room.
Everyone laughed.
Maya and Benjamin had become inseparable after his recovery. Their connection had sparked during the darkest days, but now, they were a solid unit. Just as Elijah and Jasmine were. It was one of the most beautiful things Jasmine had witnessed.
It was heartwarming to see how the people around her had healed, found love, and had come together like family.
Maya rushed over to Jasmine, wrapping an arm around her and helping her waddle toward the door. But before they could make it outside, a sudden rush of water soaked the floor beneath them.
Jasmine froze for a moment, then looked at Maya with wide eyes.
"It's baby time!", Benjamin yelled. His face lighting up with excitement.
Elijah immediately sprang into action.
“Phillip, pull the car around!”, he shouted.
Within moments, everyone was ready to go. Damien rushed to load her suitcase into the trunk while Elijah made sure Jasmine was comfortable. He guided her carefully into the car.
"We'll head to your house and make sure everything is ready for you to come home.", Maya called out as the others climbed into the vehicle behind them.
“Don’t forget to call dad, Benji.”, Jasmine called out.
Jasmine settled into the car, feeling the excitement building. This was it. This was the moment she had been waiting for. The moment she and Elijah would become parents.
She looked at Elijah, her hand instinctively reaching for his.
“I love you, but I think I may love him a little more.”, she said. Her voice soft but full of affection as she braced through another contraction.
Elijah smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
"That's the only man I can't be jealous of. I love you both.", he replied. His words filled with warmth as he kissed her on the head.
They drove in silence for a few moments. Each lost in their thoughts, but both filled with a sense of contentment that only came from knowing they had each other, and soon, they would have their son.
As the car pulled up at the hospital, Jasmine’s thoughts were filled with nothing but anticipation for what was to come. It felt as though everything had led to this. The journey had been long. Filled with ups and downs, but here they were… together, stronger than ever. The past was behind them, and the future was wide open and full of promise.
As Elijah helped her out of the car, she couldn’t help but smile. It was the only way she could push through the growing contractions. She thought about her new life with Elijah, their growing family, and all the love that came with it.
They had lived through so much together, and now they were starting the most important chapter of all. She was ready. They both were.
Elijah let the hospital staff take over. They helped her into the bed and set her up for delivery. He thought he knew love, but this just expanded his experience of true love.
"You’re doing great. You got this.”, he called out to her.
Jasmine smiled.
"I wouldn’t want to be here with anyone else.", she replied.
“Alright, it’s time to push.”, a nurse said.
And with that, they stepped into their new life.
Ready to face whatever came next… together.
