Chapter 150
Chapter 150
His body stiffened almost imperceptibly for a moment, then he let out a bitter laugh. "I just love you so much. I'd give you my life if I could. Brent has deep roots in the Wilson family, so I have to think ahead. I just want to make sure you're taken care of."
"Thinking ahead doesn't mean talking like that." I pinched his side and scolded him gently, my tone softening. "Don't say things like that anymore. Whatever happens, we face it together."
He nodded obediently and held me tighter.
That evening, we got back to the villa. To ease the insecurity he'd been carrying all day, after washing up, I curled into his arms on my own.
In the dim glow of the wall lamp, I tilted my head up, traced the line of his lips with my fingertips, then leaned in and kissed him.
Benjamin's throat moved. A dark fire ignited in the depths of his eyes.
He took control, cupped the back of my head, and pressed me down into the soft mattress.
Afterward, I lay against his chest catching my breath, and that's when I noticed something was off.
He always had endless energy, but tonight his chest was heaving violently, his breathing ragged like a broken bellows. I reached around to his back and felt it — cold sweat, everywhere.
"Benjamin?" I was startled. I propped myself up and switched on the bedside lamp.
In the light, his face was paper white, completely drained of color. Even his lips had a faint grayish tinge.
His eyes were shut, brows drawn tight, like he was fighting through some kind of pain.
"What's wrong? Does something hurt?" I panicked completely. I grabbed my robe and threw it on, reaching for my phone to call the family doctor.
He caught my wrist. He barely managed to open his eyes and forced a weak smile. "It's nothing... I just haven't recovered my strength yet."
"Don't lie to me!" My eyes were already stinging. "What's been going on with you these past few days? You were sweating the whole time in Eldoria, and now this!"
Seeing how genuinely scared I was, he sighed and gently pulled me back under the covers. "Don't call the doctor. The gastroenteritis back in Eldoria was really bad, and on top of my old injury, the doctor told me I need complete rest for a while. No... strenuous activity. I couldn't help myself just now. I pushed too hard."
It was a perfectly reasonable explanation, but watching him lie there so weak and pale, the unease inside me spread like weeds I couldn't pull out.
The next morning, I couldn't sit still any longer.
I texted Jade and cleared every meeting and appointment on the White Group's schedule for the day.
"Get up. Get dressed." I stood by the bed, firm.
Benjamin had just woken up, his voice still rough. "Where are we going?"
"The hospital. Full checkup." I kept my expression flat and tossed his clothes onto the bed.
He paused, his brow immediately creasing. "I already told you, it's just a weak stomach. Luca's arranged for the family doctor to come this afternoon. There's no need to drag ourselves to a hospital."
"A family doctor can't run a full screening." I held his gaze, no room for argument. "Benjamin, you always want me with you even when you have a cold. So why are you so against going to the hospital today? Are you hiding something from me?"
My question made something flicker across his eyes — fast, but I caught it.
He looked away and rubbed his temple with a tired sigh. "What would I hide from you? It's just that the Wilson Group has an acquisition to sign off on today. I can't leave..."
"Let the vice president handle it." I stepped forward and grabbed his wrist, pulling him up out of bed. "You're coming with me to the hospital today no matter what. Otherwise, I'm moving back to the White Mansion right now."
He gave in with a long exhale and wrapped his hand around mine. "Alright. I'll go with you."
I took him straight to the best private hospital in Harbor City and booked an appointment with a top specialist.
The full workup was exhaustive. It took up most of the morning.
Waiting for the results was the hardest part. I sat on the sofa in the VIP lounge, holding Benjamin's hand tight. His hand was still cold.
Then my phone started buzzing like crazy.
I pulled it out. It was Jade.
"Ms. White, something urgent came up!" Jade's voice was tense. "The new energy project on the east side — the partner just demanded changes to the core terms. They're in the conference room right now and insisting you make the call in person. They won't even do a video call."
I frowned and glanced at the doctor's closed office door.
The results weren't out yet.
"Go handle your work. It's important." Benjamin patted the back of my hand, calm as ever. "I'll be fine here. When the report comes out, I'll bring it to you."
I hesitated.
The east side project was critical to the White Group's recovery. I couldn't afford to let it fall apart.
"I'll be right at the end of the hallway. I'll be back in a minute." I told him, then walked quickly to a quiet corner of the corridor.
The partner on the other end was aggressive. I had no choice but to focus completely, fighting over every clause word by word.
The back-and-forth dragged on for a full twenty minutes.
By the time I finally smoothed things over and hung up, I rushed back to the lounge to find Benjamin gone from the sofa.
My chest tightened. I pushed open the doctor's office door.
Benjamin was sitting across from the doctor's desk, a thick stack of test results in his hands.
He heard me come in and turned around. His eyes were unreadable.
"Doctor, what do the results say?" I didn't even stop to catch my breath. I went straight to the desk, leaned over it with both hands, and looked urgently at the specialist sitting across from us.
The doctor adjusted his reading glasses and flipped through the data sheets, his tone unhurried. "Mrs. Wilson, there's no need to worry too much. Based on all the indicators, Mr. Wilson's condition is nothing serious."
"Nothing serious?" I stared at him, then pointed at Benjamin's pale face. "He's been sweating constantly for days. His energy is completely gone. Even his body temperature is lower than normal."
"That's from an earlier serious injury that hasn't fully healed, combined with prolonged overexertion. It's triggered significant gastrointestinal dysfunction and nervous system dysregulation." The doctor explained patiently. "Mr. Wilson's baseline health is good. He's simply been running on empty, and his body is sending a warning. He needs strict bed rest, medication on schedule, and absolutely no strenuous activity or emotional stress. With proper care, he'll recover gradually."
Hearing that, the tension in me eased a little.
But looking at Benjamin's face — still that sickly, washed-out white — the unease in my chest refused to leave.
He'd been alone in that office for a while. Was he really just listening to the doctor go over his condition?
"You heard all that?" Benjamin took my hand and pulled me into his arms, his voice low and soothing. "I told you it was nothing. You always worry too much."
I shot him a look. "If you didn't give me so much to worry about, would I be like this? Look at your hand — it's cold."
