Chapter 23 Two Strikingly Similar Individuals
Emily took a deep breath, savoring the familiar scent that belonged to her company.
She turned to the receptionist and asked, "Is everything going well with the company recently?"
Dawn Bowman was an old employee of Emily Pharmaceuticals. She nodded and replied, "Don't worry, Miss Conner, everything has been fine recently."
"Good." Emily acknowledged with a nod and headed towards the direction of the elevator.
Passing employees greeted Emily with nods and respectfully said, “Good afternoon, Miss Conner."
The name "Emily Conner" was chosen by Emily herself. Her mother's last name was Conner, hence she changed her surname to Conner.
Arriving at the top floor via the elevator, Emily walked into the spacious CEO's office where Alexander was seated, waiting for her.
"Boss, you're really here!" Alexander exclaimed as he jumped up from his seat, quickly making room for her to sit.
Emily removed her sunglasses and settled into the comfortable leather sofa, leaning back lazily. "So, tell me, how's the progress?"
Alexander stood respectfully by her side and reported, "The research team for that new drug has been stagnant. Several attempts at experiments have failed."
Emily furrowed her brows and gestured with delicate hands, "Where's the report?"
Alexander hurriedly handed over a stack of documents.
As she flipped through them, she asked coldly, "Why didn't you inform me of this earlier?"
Helplessly, Alexander replied, "You said not to bother you with trivial matters while you were in prison. I thought we could take it slowly and discuss it after you were released. Besides, this new drug is complex. No team in the world has successfully created it yet. Isn't it normal to fail several times?"
"Alexander! How many times have I told you?" Emily tightened her brows, her beautiful face filled with seriousness. "In this dog-eat-dog era, we can only dominate the market by staying ahead of others. If you're still so indifferent, you might as well go back and inherit the Greer family's business!"
Pouting, Alexander shamelessly approached Emily, grabbing her arm and shaking it, "Okay, okay, Miss Conner, don't be angry. Let's quickly look at the report and give them some feedback. Actually, I've pointed out several errors to them before, but alas, my IQ isn't high enough. Major decisions still need to be made by you."
"So cheeky!" Emily glared at him, then earnestly began to read the experimental report.
The afternoon sun was just right, casting warm rays through the floor-to-ceiling windows onto Emily. Despite the warmth, it did not affect her work attitude.
Sitting on the sofa beside her, Alexander stared at this scene with infatuation, sneakily pulling out his phone to capture this beautiful moment.
"Delete the photo." Suddenly, a fierce and stern voice cut through.
Helplessly, Alexander stuck out his tongue, caught in the act once again.
He asked, "Boss, how can you be so distracted?"
Emily closed the report and said seriously, "I've identified the cause of the failure. We need to change the main formula."
Alexander was startled, then quickly rushed over, "Boss, you've already seen through the essence of the failed cases? Let's go meet with the team members."
"Okay." Emily nodded.
Just then, the office phone rang. Emily answered immediately.
It was Dawn's voice on the other end, "Miss Conner, this is Dawn. Ethan..."
"Lulu, it's me." Emily interrupted coldly, asking, "What's the matter?"
"Miss Conner, Mr. Thomas from Ethan Group is here. He said he wants to discuss the progress of the new drug research with you."
"What?" Emily jumped up from her chair.
Perplexed, Alexander asked, "What's going on?"
"You go ahead and lead Mr. Thomas to the conference room. Tell him I'll be there shortly," Emily said firmly.
"Yes, Miss Conner." Dawn hung up the phone, her eyes full of admiration as she looked at the handsome man sitting in a wheelchair in front of her.
She smiled and said, "Mr. Thomas, Miss Conner invites you to discuss in the conference room. Let me take you there."
Ethan nodded slightly.
Byron couldn't help but interrupt with curiosity, "Isn't Miss Conner always elusive? How come she happens to be in the company today? It's quite timely that we've arrived!"
Dawn also replied excitedly, "Yeah, it's really coincidental. Miss Conner hasn't appeared for a month, and she just came today."
At the CEO's office, Emily hung up the phone, her face showing a hint of difficulty.
Alexander was also surprised, "How come Ethan came just when you came? Could it be that he's discovered your identity?"
Emily was also puzzled. She bit her lip and said, "It shouldn't be. I've erased all traces of my whereabouts! Did he come to inspect while I was away?"
Alexander shook his head blankly and affirmed, "No, this is his first inspection."
Emily suddenly felt uneasy.
She thought, ‘Could it be that Ethan has really discovered me, so he came to catch me?’
"Boss, if you're really discovered, you might not be able to obtain the medical book," Alexander said anxiously, "You've already registered your marriage with him. If you can't get the medical book, it'll be a big loss!"
"Yes, indeed! I even helped him bathe! I did all that hard work for nothing!" Emily bit her lip, growing angrier as she thought about it.
If she was really discovered, she felt that all her efforts were in vain.
"What?" Alexander exclaimed, "You helped him bathe? So you've seen his body?"
"Lower your voice. He's a cripple, and the caregiver was dismissed, so as his legal wife, I had to step in," Emily sighed helplessly, pursing her lips. "Anyway, I didn't take a good look."
Alexander looked at her with a mournful expression, "You haven't seen mine yet, but you've seen other men's..."
Emily was speechless. She asked, ‘Do you want to get slapped?"
Alexander immediately resumed his normal expression. "Boss, what should we do now? Ethan already knows that you are in the company. It's impossible for you not to see him, but if you do..."
Emily furrowed her brows, calmly saying, "I have to see him."

Ten minutes later, Emily, holding documents, arrived at the conference room with Alexander.
As the security guard opened the door, Emily saw Ethan sitting in a wheelchair. He looked exactly as he had been at noon when they parted ways. He was immaculately dressed, exuding a daunting aura.
Especially those dark and cold eyes, staring directly at the woman in sunglasses before him. At that moment, she felt as if she had been completely exposed.
"Mr. Thomas, it’s a pleasure to meet you." Emily walked forward and extended her right hand towards Ethan.
Her sweet and soft voice was bone-meltingly charming.
Alexander shivered behind her a few times.
He thought, ‘Boss's mature voice instantly turned into a girlish one!’
Ethan's pitch-black eyes stared straight at Emily who was wearing sunglasses. A familiar feeling rushed over him.
He thought, ‘Her nose, her lips, her ears, and even her hand all bore a striking resemblance to Emily. Can there really be two people in the world who look so alike?’
