Chapter 57: Shadows of Trust Jake POV
I pushed open the apartment door, kicking off my boots by the mat, the faint smell of coffee lingering in the air. The gym bag thudded onto the floor as I shrugged off my jacket, hanging it on the rack. Sophia sat on the couch, her knees pulled up, staring at the TV screen, but it was off, reflecting her silhouette back at me.
"Hey, Soph," I said, dropping my keys on the counter with a clink, walking over to her.
She looked up, her eyes red-rimmed, and sniffed, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her hoodie. "Hey."
I sat beside her, resting my arm along the back of the couch, brushing her shoulder with my fingers. "You okay? You look sad again."
She nodded, picking at a loose thread on the cushion. "Yeah, just... a lot today."
"Tell me," I said, grabbing a water bottle from the coffee table, twisting the cap off and taking a sip.
She sighed, tucking her hair behind her ear. "Ran into Ethan while he was jogging. Tried to apologize, but he’s still upset."
I set the bottle down, my jaw tightening. "Ethan again? Why’re you letting him get to you like this?"
She glanced at me, her hand pausing on the cushion. "It’s not just him, Jake. Vanessa too. She thinks we need someone inside Sinclair Global to take Victor down."
I leaned back, crossing my arms, my foot tapping against the rug. "Vanessa? You’re still talking to her after everything?"
"She’s got info," Sophia said, shifting to face me, her knee brushing mine. "But Ethan... I messed up, and now he won’t even talk to me."
I grabbed a coaster, flipping it between my fingers, my voice sharp. "He’s not worth this, Soph. You’re giving him too much attention."
She frowned, tilting her head. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
I tossed the coaster back onto the table, my hands clenching into fists. "Means I don’t like seeing you all torn up over some guy who can’t handle a fight."
"It’s not like that," she argued, her voice rising slightly, her fingers curling into the hoodie’s hem. "It’s about the plan against Victor. And then there’s this—"
She reached under the couch, pulling out a crumpled envelope, and handed it to me. I unfolded it, scanning the words—Restraining Order. "What the hell?" I said, dropping it onto my lap, my eyes snapping to hers.
"Victor got it," she said, kicking the leg of the coffee table lightly. "Says I threatened him when I blocked his car."
"That bastard," I muttered, crumpling the paper again, tossing it onto the table with a thud. "He’s playing dirty."
"Yeah," she agreed, picking up a mug of cold tea, swirling it before setting it back down. "And I don’t know what to do about Ethan or Vanessa."
I stood, pacing to the window, pushing the blinds aside to peek out at the streetlights flickering on. "You’re letting them drag you down, Soph. Especially Ethan."
She followed me with her eyes, her voice softer. "I’m not trying to, Jake. I just... I need him on our side."
I turned, leaning against the sill, my arms crossed again. "Our side? Or your side? Seems like he’s all you’re thinking about lately."
"That’s not fair," she said, standing up, her socks sliding slightly on the floor. "You’re the one I’m with."
I stepped closer, my voice low. "Prove it, then. Show me I’m still your guy."
She blinked, tilting her head. "What?"
I grabbed her hand, pulling her toward me, my fingers lacing through hers. "I need to feel it, Soph. With all this crap going on, I need to know where I stand."
She hesitated, her eyes searching mine, then nodded slowly. "Okay, Jake."
I sat back on the couch, tugging her down beside me, my hand resting on her thigh. "Just... touch me," I said, my voice rough, guiding her hand to my lap.
Her eyebrows shot up, her hand freezing mid-air. "Jake, really?"
"Yeah," I insisted, leaning closer, my breath brushing her ear. "Please."
She bit her lip, then slid her hand down, her fingers tentative at first, unbuttoning my jeans with a soft click. "This is... unexpected," she said, her voice a mix of surprise and amusement, her hand moving slowly.
I groaned softly, leaning my head back, my hands gripping the couch cushions. "Keep going," I murmured, my eyes closing as her touch grew more confident.
She shifted closer, her free hand resting on my chest, her fingers curling into my shirt. "You sure about this?" she asked, her voice low, her breath warm against my neck.
"Very," I replied, opening my eyes to meet hers, pulling her into a kiss, my lips pressing hard against hers. Her hand kept moving, the rhythm steady, driving me closer.
I pulled back, kicking off my jeans fully, the denim hitting the floor with a rustle. "Come here," I said, tugging her onto my lap, my hands sliding under her hoodie, lifting it over her head and tossing it aside.
She straddled me, her hands on my shoulders, her nails digging in slightly. "Jake," she whispered, her lips brushing mine as I unhooked her bra, letting it fall between us.
I kissed her neck, my hands roaming her back, pulling her closer. "I need you," I said, my voice husky, my fingers working at her jeans, sliding them down her thighs.
She nodded, kicking them off, her socks slipping off with them. "Okay," she breathed, her hands guiding me as we moved together, the couch creaking under us.
I lifted her slightly, adjusting us, my breath hitching as we connected, her legs tightening around me. "You’re mine," I murmured, kissing her deeply, our movements syncing, urgent and raw.
She gasped, her fingers threading through my hair, pulling gently. "Always," she replied, her voice breaking as we made love again, the outside world fading into the rhythm of us.
