THE SILENT HAND BEHIND THE FALL
That night, Tasha sat on her bed, staring at the ceiling. The message echoed in her mind, replaying again and again.
Why? Why would someone threaten her because of Rory? What was she or who was she?
She opened the message again, hoping she had misunderstood. But no, the words were still there. They had not changed.
She dropped the phone like it burned her. Her chest was tight, and her breathing had become shallow.
If Rory was part of that group, could she really be that dangerous?
She wanted to believe it was all a sick prank. Maybe someone was trying to scare her. But the look in her father’s eyes earlier said otherwise.
Whatever this was, it was bigger than her. And she might have just stepped into something she wasn’t prepared for.
The next morning, Rory woke up from her bed. She yawned and turned towards the other side of the bed, but Victor was not there.
She smiled softly, knowing exactly where he was.
The past few weeks, Victor had been making sure she ate before starting his day. It became a routine. He would wake up early, prepare her breakfast, and make sure she eats to her fill before he prepares for his own work.
When he woke up, he kissed her forehead. Then, he went straight to the kitchen to prepare her favourite.
She sat up, brushing her hair back. The scent of coffee and pancakes wafted through the air.
He was cooking again.
Rory yawned and stretched, her silky robe slipping off one shoulder. Just as she was about to step out of the room to join him, her phone vibrated. She checked to see it was Ms. Lee, why was she calling this early, she wondered.
When she picked up, an excited Lee asked her to check the head news.
"Hello?"
Lee’s voice was excited. "Rory! Have you checked the news? Oh my God!"
Rory’s heart skipped. "What happened?"
"Nexus Innovations just announced they’re cancelling their product launch! They’re pulling out of all competition with your company. Girl, this is huge."
Rory blinked. "Wait. What?"
Rory blinked herself awake properly and opened her browser, her hands trembling slightly, and sure enough, the headlines screamed it.
BREAKING: Nexus Innovations Bows Out — Cancels Major Launch Amidst Mysterious Pressure.
"What…?" she whispered.
Ms. Lee was still speaking, but her words were distant now, drowned out by the roar in Rory’s ears.
They had pulled out, they had cancelled everything? They were backing down from her. But she didn't do anything yet, she hadn’t even made a move.
Rory stared at her phone screen again, unable to believe her eyes. Another headline blazed in bold, red letters on the news page:
"Nexus Innovations Withdraws from Tech Race, Cancels Product Launch."
Her lips parted in shock. Her brows furrowed. It didn’t make sense. Just two days ago, Nexus had been parading their confidence all over the media. They had dropped teasers, bought ads, and even held a press conference where they hinted at releasing a revolutionary tech product. The same one her company had been developing. The same one they tried to steal.
And now nothing? Just like that?
Before she could overthink it, Rory rushed out of the bedroom in her fuzzy slippers, excitement bubbling in her chest. She didn't even stop to adjust her night gown that had slipped off one shoulder. She ran straight to the kitchen where Victor was humming softly, stirring a pot of scrambled eggs. The smell of tomatoes, peppers, and caramelized onions filled the air.
"Victor! Victor, babe!" she called out breathlessly.
He turned quickly, wiping his hands on a towel, eyes scanning her face with concern.
"What’s wrong, my love? Are you okay?"
She grinned and shoved the phone into his hands. "Read it! Read the headline! Nexus backed out. They’re not launching anymore!"
He read the article with a calm expression, though inside he was fighting to keep his heartbeat steady. He already knew. Of course he knew. He made the call that ensured it happened, but this moment was hers.
He looked up, acting surprised. "No way... That’s incredible. Babe, this is amazing!"
Rory flung her arms around him, laughing into his chest. "I thought we were going to have to fight tooth and nail. I thought we would have to sue, maybe even lose the product. But now we’ve got the green light to launch without that shadow hanging over us!
Victor held her tightly, inhaling the scent of her hair, and whispered, "You deserve this win."
She leaned back, eyes shining. "Tell me the truth, did you have anything to do with it? You said you would handle it..."
He chuckled lightly, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear. "Maybe I just sent some firm emails, called a few lawyers. I didn't think they would act quickly."
She narrowed her eyes playfully. "That’s it? No dramatic standoffs or secret hacker moves?"
He shrugged with a smirk. "What kind of husband would I be if I gave away all my secrets?"
She grinned, kissed his cheek, and then dashed off to get ready for work. She didn’t push the matter. Somewhere deep down, she suspected there was more to it. But Victor had always protected her, and right now, she just wanted to enjoy this victory.
Back at the office, Rory was welcomed with claps, cheers, and applause from her team. Everyone stood to their feet when she walked in. Shareholders, board members, and project leads all had gathered for an impromptu meeting to celebrate the news.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Mr. Benson, one of the lead investors, said as he raised a glass of orange juice. “To Rory Tech. To our incredible CEO. And to our product, which is no longer under threat. Let’s launch this baby!”
Cheers erupted.
Rory smiled, her cheeks warm. “Thank you all. I know these last few weeks have been stressful, but you all kept pushing. You trusted me. And now, we’re here. So let’s get this product out into the world and show them why they can never take what we’ve built.”
Across the city, Tasha paced her living room like a trapped animal.
Her heels clicked aggressively on the marble floor. Her friends were gathered again, but the wine glasses and laughter were missing this time. Her fury was so thick in the air that no one dared say much.
“They shut it down,” she snapped. “They shut down the entire thing like they were scared of her.”
One of the girls, Nadine, raised a brow. “Well, that’s what happens when threats get sent to your phone in the middle of a party.”
Tasha glared. “You think this is funny? This was my shot. I had that product in my hands, I was ready to knock her down.”
“And then you got one anonymous message and chickened out,” Alina murmured.
Tasha turned slowly. “I did not chicken out. That message—”
“Was a threat,” Brina cut in, standing. “And maybe it was serious. But come on, girl, you’ve never been scared of anyone before.”
Tasha’s jaw tightened. “You didn’t see it. You didn’t feel it. The way it was written... it wasn’t some regular person. It felt like something out of a damn movie.”
Her voice dropped into a whisper. “They called themselves the Umbra Legion.”
Nadine blinked. “Sounds like a villain group from a fantasy novel.”
“They’re real,” Tasha whispered. “My dad knows about them. He turned pale when I mentioned the name.”
“Wait, your dad? The Mr. Langston?”
Tasha nodded.
Brina crossed her arms. “And what did he say?”
“He told me to never mess with Rory. He said he doesn’t know who she really is, but she’s not someone I want to offend.”
Alina leaned forward, her voice low. “So you think she’s part of this Legion?”
“I don’t know,” Tasha muttered. “But why else would they warn me? Why else would she be so protected?”
The room fell silent.
Brina eventually scoffed. “Well, if she is, that just means we gotta play smarter. Lay low, regroup, then hit when they least expect. Something they can not trace to you”
Tasha’s eyes gleamed with something darker. “Exactly. I’m not done with Rory, not by a long shot. She humiliated me, took Jason away from me, and then went aheda to marry Victor, my long-time crush. One threat won’t stop me, I’ll bide my time.”
“But,” Alina warned, “next time, make sure you know exactly who you’re up against.”
Tasha nodded slowly, her lips curling into a bitter smile. “Oh, I will. I’ll know everything about her, her past, her secrets, and when I strike again, she’ll never see it coming.”
The girls exchanged looks, in them was a mixture of fear and awe. Tasha was dangerous when angry, and now that fear had joined the mix, she was unpredictably deadly.
The next morning, Rory stood before her team again, dressed in a crisp white suit, confidence radiating off her. The launch was going live in an hour.
Victor was there too, in a dark suit, standing at the back quietly, watching her.
He couldn’t help but feel proud. He had done what needed to be done. Silently and ruthlessly, he had protected the woman he loved.
And now, as the countdown ticked on the screens and the cameras went live, he whispered under his breath. "No one touches what’s mine."
Little did they know that he was the silent hand behind the fall.
