Chapter 65 Because I Married Him!
Chapter 65 Because I Married Him!
On the other side, Isabella returned to her apartment, and when she opened the door, she found Damien sitting on the sofa waiting for her.
Ever since their argument a few days ago, she hadn't seen him at all. She hadn't expected to run into Vera at the hospital today and then come home to find him here too, it felt like fate playing tricks on her.
Damien slowly stood from the sofa and walked forward, pushing Isabella's wheelchair to the side of the couch.
"Pretty late. Where were you?"
Isabella didn't answer.
Damien leaned over her, his voice tight. "How much longer are you planning to stay mad at me?"
"I've never been trying to make trouble." Isabella's voice stayed calm. "Every word I said was sincere."
After a moment, Damien spoke again. "If you want to throw a tantrum, fine. I'll give you time."
He sat back down, and neither of them spoke for a while.
After a long silence, Isabella finally said, "I just met Mrs. Blackwood."
Something cold flashed through Damien's eyes. "What did you say?"
"I finally met her in person." Isabella kept her tone even. "She's really beautiful. No wonder you—"
Before she could finish, Damien kicked the coffee table in front of him hard enough to make her flinch, his breathing coming faster. "What do I have to do to get you to stop thinking crazy things?"
"I'm not thinking crazy," Isabella said. "I just hope you can be honest with your own heart—"
Damien suddenly stood and braced both hands on her wheelchair, leaning in close. "I need to prove it to you, is that it?"
Isabella froze, then quickly reached out and grabbed his sleeve. "Why don't you understand? You don't need to prove anything to anyone. Don't do something you'll regret—"
Damien's eyes went dark as he stared at her for a long time, his voice dropping low. "I'll show you exactly what's in my heart."
Then he ignored her struggling and forced a rough kiss on her lips before standing and walking out without looking back.

Vera pov:
When Marcus finally showed up in front of me, I'd already been sitting at the hotel corridor bar for half an hour.
He walked over slowly with his damp hair casually messy, looking like he'd just gotten out of the shower but still managing to seem lazy about the whole thing.
"Something happened?" He sat down and looked at me. "You look miserable."
Before he arrived, I'd been pretty agitated, but hearing his question somehow calmed me down enough to answer. "Not yet."
Marcus turned and ordered a glass of wine from the bartender, then looked at me again. "Then what do you need my help with?"
"Planning ahead."
Marcus laughed and tilted his head slightly. "Is Mrs. Blackwood always this crisis-conscious? Is that why you went to Caspian in the first place?"
Even though his tone was joking, the mockery underneath was pretty clear.
I admitted it calmly anyway. "Yes. It's human nature to prepare for danger in times of peace."
Being called out like that seemed to stun Marcus for a second. He turned and scoffed. "I told him women's business was nothing but trouble, but he wouldn't listen... So tell me, how exactly do you plan for this rainy day?"
"I don't care about anything else," I said. "I just need to make sure my family won't be affected."
Marcus looked completely unconcerned. "That's it? Worth dragging me out of bed in the middle of the night?"
"What if you're up against Damien?" I said it slowly and watched his reaction.
Marcus narrowed his eyes slightly and turned to take the wine the bartender had just served, taking a slow sip before answering. "What's so special about him anyway?"
I stayed quiet for a long time before finally letting out a slow breath.
So the next morning, when someone knocked on the door, I woke up fast, sat up on the sofa, and walked over to open it.
Several people in uniforms stood outside, some showing their IDs while others had cameras with recorders.
"Are you Vera Quinn? We're from the Economic Crime Investigation Division. Last night, someone filed a report that Quinn Industries violated regulations on several projects over the past two years."
A strange calm settled over me. "Then please wait a moment while I change my clothes, is that okay?"
"Yes."
I invited them into the house and went upstairs alone.
After changing, I came back down quickly and left with the investigators.
I was gone for almost an hour before Marcus found out what happened.
He immediately exploded into cursing on the other end of the phone, then hung up.
In less than two hours, news that I'd been taken in for investigation spread throughout the entire city.
A reporter rushed to Blackwood Industries, hoping to get Damien's response, but only received a very official statement from the PR department, wait for the results and trust in justice.
At the same time, Quinn Industries also underwent investigation and evidence collection. Lucas kept his face neutral while answering questions and watching Thomas cooperate with the investigators gathering evidence.
The investigation and evidence collection went on for hours, and eventually Thomas and the finance department were also taken in to cooperate.
Lucas said sarcastically, "In all these years, I've never seen an investigation team so eager and efficient."
After saying that, he practically slammed the door behind the investigators, and when he got back to the office, he started making non-stop phone calls.
By evening, Marcus finally managed to get me out.
I avoided the reporters and went back to the Quinn house, calling Lucas on the way to let him know I was safe.
Lucas hadn't arrived yet when Marcus showed up at the door first, and the second he saw me, he went off. "No wonder you said as long as I protect your family, you'd be fine. You really don't consider yourself part of the Quinn family at all, do you? Why are you so damn selfless? Do you know that if something happened to you, it would affect other people too?"
I calmly invited him to sit down, poured him a glass of water, and then answered. "Because I knew I'd be fine."
"You knew!" Marcus kept going. "Do you have any idea how much effort I put into getting you out? Damien is ruthless and wants to destroy you, he has ten thousand ways to do it! You think you can fight back against that? What did your family even do to make him want to be this cruel?"
I'd been with the investigation team all day, and my face probably showed it, but I still laughed softly. "I only know that my family never did anything wrong. They're all innocent."
"Then what did you do?" Marcus stared at me hard. "Don't tell me it's actually true, that you really hurt his girlfriend back then to marry him... Is that why he hates you this much?"
After a moment of silence, I said slowly, "You're partly right."
Marcus looked at me with obvious wariness now. "Which part?"
I laughed softly again. "Because I married him!"
Marcus stared at me for a second. "That's it?"
"That's it."
The only mistake I ever made was marrying him.
