Chapter 42 Dr. Shaw Warns CPS Involvement

Chapter 42 Dr. Shaw Warns CPS Involvement
The Blackmoor penthouse was quieter than usual, almost eerily so. The kind of silence that presses against the ears, making every tick of the clock a declaration of accountability. Lila sat at the kitchen table, a half-drunk cup of coffee cooling beside her, while Dr. Anika Shaw’s presence felt heavy in the room. Her expression was clinical, precise, yet tinged with concern.

“Lila,” Dr. Shaw began, her voice soft but firm, “we need to discuss the long-term implications of what Elliot has experienced. And by extension… what you’ve been managing as his primary caregiver.”

Lila’s brow furrowed. “I know Elliot’s withdrawn. I see it. I’m managing it. He’s safe.”

Dr. Shaw shook her head slightly. “Physically, yes. But emotional and psychological safety is another matter. Even with Adrian’s intervention, the child has been exposed to repeated high-level threats. Trauma has cumulative effects. And from a legal standpoint… I’m obligated to inform you that if any outside authority were to intervene—Child Protective Services, for example—there could be consequences.”

Lila stiffened. “Consequences? He’s safe. No one has hurt him. He’s never been abandoned or neglected. He’s… he’s living with me and Adrian.”

Dr. Shaw leaned forward, carefully placing her hands on the table. “Safe in the moment does not always equal protected in the eyes of authorities. Witnessing gunfire, blood, and adult conflict—especially repeated incidents—can trigger mandated reporting. CPS involvement is a real possibility if your situation is evaluated by an outside party.”

Lila’s stomach twisted. She had always known the world wasn’t fair, but this—this bureaucratic and legal entanglement layered atop an already dangerous situation—felt like a new kind of trap.

“So what? I just… let him shrink into himself while officials decide whether I’m a competent mother?” she demanded, frustration edging her voice. “I’ve been protecting him from everything! From Rowan, from Evelyn, from… from Adrian’s world itself!”

Dr. Shaw’s voice was steady, but her eyes betrayed subtle empathy. “I understand. But protection in isolation isn’t enough. Emotional resilience, normalcy, stability—that’s what matters long term. And if an outside body evaluates the environment, they’ll assess your ability to provide that, not just keep him alive.”

Lila felt the walls of control she had fought so hard to maintain closing in. The empire outside, Adrian’s lethal interventions, the shadow surveillance—all of it mattered, but so did legality, so did perception.

“What if I refuse?” she asked quietly. “What if I don’t allow anyone to intervene?”

Dr. Shaw’s eyes hardened slightly. “You can’t refuse reality. The state has its prerogatives, especially when a child has been exposed to extreme risk. If they receive reports—anonymous, mandated, or otherwise—they will investigate. And if your actions or Adrian’s methods appear questionable, even if you disagree, the assessment may not favor your intentions.”

Lila pressed her hands to the table, jaw tight. Her mind flashed back to the intrusion, the blood, the masks, the shadowed figure Adrian had killed without hesitation. The city outside might be blind, but authorities could still question her judgment. Her moral compass now had legal implications, whether she liked it or not.

“I don’t… I can’t,” she murmured, almost to herself. “Elliot has already seen too much. If anyone comes… if they judge me…”

Dr. Shaw placed a steadying hand on hers. “Then we need to prepare. Proactively. Documentation, witness accounts, therapy logs, evidence of controlled environment. If you anticipate scrutiny, you can mitigate the risk. But you can’t ignore it.”

Lila exhaled slowly, tension coiling in her shoulders. She understood what Dr. Shaw meant. Survival in Adrian’s world required more than vigilance—it required foresight. Anticipation. Strategy against forces she hadn’t yet fully recognized: legal, psychological, and procedural.

“And Adrian?” she asked, voice tight. “He won’t… he won’t make it worse?”

Dr. Shaw’s eyes flickered briefly toward the open doorway, where Marcus stood silently, ever-present yet invisible, a reminder that Adrian’s interventions were never truly private. “Adrian operates on his own terms. You cannot control him. But you can document your actions, your decisions, and your rationale. That’s how you shield Elliot if the system ever scrutinizes him.”

Lila nodded slowly. “So I have to protect him from everything… and everyone. Including the law.”

Dr. Shaw’s lips pressed together. “Including the law.”

Silence settled between them for a long moment. The weight of responsibility pressed on Lila like iron. Protecting Elliot physically had already cost her nerves, sleep, and emotional stability. Protecting him legally and psychologically now added another layer—a realm she had never anticipated entering, one where strategy and compliance were as vital as courage.

Finally, she spoke, voice low but resolute. “Then we prepare. Every document, every note, every precaution. If anyone questions my choices… I will have proof that every action I took was for him. And I will not fail him.”

Dr. Shaw nodded, a faint relief brushing her expression. “Good. That’s the first step. Anticipate, prepare, and protect. And Lila… don’t forget to care for yourself, too. Your own stability matters for Elliot’s perception of safety.”

Lila swallowed, the magnitude of her task pressing down harder than the threats outside or the shadows within Adrian’s empire. She realized that Elliot’s survival depended not just on shielding him from intruders or threats from the Blackmoor family—it depended on her mastering the complex terrain of law, perception, and psychological care.

And for the first time, she understood: the fight for Elliot wasn’t just about outmaneuvering Adrian’s enemies. It was about outmaneuvering the very systems that claimed to protect children, even as they risked misjudging her intentions in the midst of chaos.
