Chapter 45 – The Cursed Blood Awakens

Chapter 45 – The Cursed Blood Awakens
Dawn crept across the desert, casting long shadows over the obelisk and their smoldering fire. Kaelen woke with a start, his chest burning as though flames licked beneath his skin. Sweat beaded his brow, and when he glanced at his arms, the faint black veins pulsed angrily, darker than ever.

“Elara” His voice cracked as he doubled over, clutching his ribs.

She was instantly at his side, her healer’s senses already reaching for her satchel. “It’s the curse again, isn’t it?”

Kaelen’s jaw clenched, and he nodded, his breath ragged. “Stronger. Different.”

Before she could respond, a searing pulse erupted from him, a shockwave that rattled the stones around them. Elara was thrown back, hitting the sand hard. She scrambled upright, eyes wide.

Kaelen’s body was wracked with tremors, his veins glowing as though molten fire coursed through them. His irises burned red, not with rage but with something primal an awakening.

“Elara…” His voice was distorted, layered with something inhuman. “Stay back.”

But she didn’t. Crawling toward him despite the pressure of energy pushing against her, she reached for his hand. “I’m not leaving you, Kaelen. Whatever this is, we’ll face it together.”

Her touch anchored him for a heartbeat, but then the curse surged again, dragging him into its depths.

The Vision

Kaelen’s mind split. The desert vanished, replaced by a hall of mirrors, endless and gleaming. Each reflection showed him as something monstrous fangs bared, eyes aflame, wings of shadow spreading behind him.

“You are no prince,” a voice whispered from everywhere at once. “You are ruin incarnate. The curse does not bind you it is you.”

He stumbled back, shaking his head. “No… I am not this.”

The mirror before him shifted, showing Elara bound in chains of darkness, her light snuffed out. “She will fall because of you. She confessed her love, but love cannot cleanse blood tainted at birth.”

Kaelen roared, slamming his fist into the glass. It shattered, but the shards only multiplied, each one reflecting another twisted version of himself. His heart pounded, torn between fury and despair.

Then soft as a prayer he heard Elara’s voice, echoing through the void. “Kaelen, you are not your curse. You are more than what it wants you to be.”

Her words pierced the darkness, and for a moment, light flickered in his veins.

Reality

Outside, Elara fought to hold him steady. She pressed both hands against his chest, whispering healing incantations she barely understood, willing her strength into him. The curse’s energy burned her palms, but she didn’t pull away.

“Fight it, Kaelen. Don’t let it take you.”

His body convulsed, but slowly, his breathing steadied. The red in his eyes dimmed, though the veins beneath his skin still pulsed with ominous power.

When he finally collapsed into her arms, his voice was hoarse but clear. “It’s… changing me. Not just killing me reshaping me.”

Elara’s heart hammered. “Into what?”

He gave a bitter laugh. “Into what I was always meant to be a monster.”

She shook her head fiercely. “No. The curse may change your blood, but it cannot touch your soul. That is still yours, Kaelen. As long as you fight, it cannot win.”

But even as she spoke, she wondered if her words were enough.

The Scholar’s Revelation

Later that day, they reached the ruins of an abandoned waystation, where broken statues and faded murals hinted at an ancient civilization. Among the rubble, Elara found a cracked tablet half-buried in the sand.

She brushed it clean, tracing the symbols with her fingers. Her eyes widened. “This… this speaks of the ‘Cursed Bloodline.’ Kaelen, it’s about you.”

He approached, weary but alert. “What does it say?”

Elara’s voice trembled as she translated. “A prince marked by the Shadow Flame will awaken not to die, but to become the vessel of an ancient power. His blood will either unmake the world or save it.”

Kaelen stared at the tablet, his stomach twisting. “So it was never about killing me. It was about using me.”

“And maybe,” Elara said softly, “about giving you a choice.”

He turned to her, anguish in his gaze. “Choice? Every day I feel the curse clawing deeper. What if one day I can’t hold it back? What if the choice is taken from me?”

“Then I’ll remind you,” she said, her grip tightening on his hand. “Every single time, I’ll remind you of who you are.”

A Dangerous Omen

That night, Kaelen dreamed again. But this time, the vision was clearer. He stood upon the capital’s throne, his hands drenched in blood, Elara’s lifeless form at his feet. Shadows cheered, whispering his name like a hymn.

He woke with a scream, drenched in sweat. Elara stirred beside him, immediately alert. “Another dream?”

Kaelen’s chest heaved. “Not a dream. A warning.” He buried his face in his hands. “Elara, what if I can’t stop it? What if the curse is right that I was never meant to rule, but to destroy?”

Elara sat beside him, pressing her forehead against his shoulder. “Then we’ll find a way to rewrite what was meant. Together.”

Kaelen swallowed hard, her words anchoring him once more. But in the shadows of the ruins, unseen eyes watched them. The Guardian, broken but not defeated, whispered to the darkness.

“The cursed blood awakens. Soon, the kingdom will burn.”

Closing Note

Kaelen’s curse has shifted from a slow death into a transformation something far more dangerous. He now stands on the edge between salvation and destruction, with Elara as his anchor. But the awakening has drawn the attention of enemies old and new, and the road ahead is darker than ever.
