Chapter 158 The Final Harbor (The End)
Chapter 158 The Final Harbor (The End)
Alice blinked several times, trying to focus on the endless rows of zeros on Evan’s phone screen. The blue glow from the device illuminated their faces in the darkness of the bedroom.
“Evan… this doesn’t make sense,” Alice whispered. “This number… it’s bigger than the entire operational assets of Elino that I ever knew.”
Evan slowly placed the phone back on the nightstand. He leaned against the headboard and drew a deep breath. “It turns out Papa Elino really was a visionary. He didn’t just hide assets, he planted them in long-term investments that no one could touch, including Edwin, for the last ten years. And now, all of it has fallen into Lucas’s hands.”
“What are we supposed to do with that much money?” Alice asked, her voice trembling slightly. “We already have everything, Evan. I don’t want this wealth to bring new problems.”
Evan squeezed Alice’s hand, his warmth steady and reassuring. “We won’t let it become a problem. We’ll do what we planned from the beginning. All of this will go into our family foundation. We’ll build hospitals, schools, and rehabilitation centers. Lucas doesn’t need this much money for himself, but the world does.”
Alice smiled, her anxiety fading. “You’re right. Let’s turn this into a blessing, not a burden. Now sleep. Tomorrow is a big day for Lucas.”
That morning, the beach beneath the cliffs of the Nathaniel estate was perfectly calm. Clear seawater rolled over white sand in a steady rhythm. Evan and Alice walked down the wooden steps toward the shoreline.
Evan carried Lucas, who wore only a tiny pair of anchor-patterned swim shorts. The baby looked thrilled, his hands pointing excitedly at the foam of the approaching waves.
“Ready, champ? This is your first introduction to the ocean,” Evan said as he lowered Lucas onto the wet sand.
Alice crouched beside them, holding Lucas’s small hands. “Come on, Lucas. Feel the water. Cold, isn’t it?”
When a small wave brushed against Lucas’s tiny feet, he startled for a moment. He pulled his legs back, his face creasing in confusion at the moving sand and water beneath him. Then, a second later, Lucas burst into loud laughter. He began stomping his feet into the water, sending little splashes onto Evan’s and Alice’s faces.
“He loves it,” Alice cried happily, guiding Lucas as he took careful steps on the wet sand with their help.
“He’s a true Nathaniel. He’s not afraid of the waves,” Evan said proudly. He took out his phone and captured the moment, Lucas’s first steps in the sea, framed by an endless horizon.
Zavian and Lavina watched from the balcony of the beach house. Zavian held a pair of binoculars, while Lavina smiled softly, a cup of tea in her hands.
“Look at them, Ma. They’re truly happy,” Zavian said.
“That’s how it should have been a long time ago, Zavian. The storm has passed,” Lavina replied gently.
Several Months Later: The First Birthday Celebration.
The main Nathaniel residence in the city was once again decorated in breathtaking splendor. But the atmosphere was different from the grand events of the past. There was no political tension or business maneuvering. The vast grounds had been transformed into a giant playground with a “Magic Forest” theme.
Hundreds of gold and blue balloons floated through the air. A small stage stood in the center of the garden, where a five-tier birthday cake topped with a little lion figurine stood proudly.
“Evan, are you sure this isn’t a bit excessive for gifts?” Alice asked, pointing at a stack of presents nearly as tall as an adult.
“Alice, this is his first birthday. I want him to know that his existence is the greatest celebration of my life,” Evan replied as he held Lucas.
Lucas could now walk a few unsteady steps. He wore a white baby tuxedo that made him look impossibly handsome.
Rico approached them with a wide smile. “All the guests have arrived, sir. The media is still barred, only our private photographers are present.”
“Good. I don’t want Lucas’s privacy disturbed,” Evan said.
The celebration began with the candle blowing. Zavian and Lavina stood beside Evan and Alice. As the guests sang “Happy Birthday,” Lucas clapped his hands enthusiastically, following the rhythm.
“Come on, Lucas… blow out the candle,” Alice encouraged.
With Evan’s and Alice’s help, the number one candle was finally extinguished. Thunderous applause filled the garden. There were no enemies lurking, no threats hiding in the shadows. Only a complete and joyful family.
After the cake ceremony, Zavian stepped up to the microphone.
“Thank you to all our relatives for being here,” Zavian said firmly. “Today, I am not only celebrating my grandson. I am celebrating the return of peace to the Nathaniel family. And as a birthday gift for Lucas, I am officially handing over leadership of our family’s humanitarian foundation to Alice Smith Nathaniel. She will guide this child’s future.”
Alice was stunned, but she stepped forward with grace. She accepted the symbolic documents from Zavian under the garden lights. She looked at Evan, and her husband gave her a supportive wink.
As the night grew late, the guests departed, leaving behind the warmth of family in the living room. Lucas was fast asleep in Lavina’s arms, exhausted from a full day of celebration.
Evan and Alice walked onto their favorite balcony on the upper floor. The night sky was crystal clear, scattered with countless stars.
“We did it, Evan,” Alice whispered. “One full year without problems. One full year of happiness.”
Evan wrapped an arm around Alice’s waist and pulled her close. “This is just the beginning, Alice. We have decades ahead of us. We’ll watch Lucas grow up, go to school, and maybe one day he’ll stand on this balcony, taking my place.”
“I hope he’s not as stubborn as you,” Alice teased.
“He’ll have your gentleness to balance it,” Evan replied.
They fell silent, savoring the precious stillness. A stillness once paid for with tears and lives put on the line. Now, that peace belonged to them forever.
Evan reached into his suit pocket and took out a small object. It was the key to their beach house, now fully renovated with an expanded play area for Lucas.
“I’ve decided one more thing,” Evan said.
“What is it?”
“Starting tomorrow, we’ll live at the beach for the rest of the season. I’ve delegated all Nathaniel Group matters to a new professional team. I want to be a father who’s always there when he calls my name for the first time,” Evan said.
Alice smiled, deeply moved. She had never imagined that the man who once forced her into marriage could become someone so full of love.
“Thank you, Evan. For everything.”
They kissed beneath the moonlight, a kiss that closed every chapter of suffering and opened a new life filled with light. No more secrets. No more enemies. Only Evan, Alice, and Lucas.
As they turned to head back inside, Evan paused and looked down at the garden below, still glowing with the remnants of the party lights. A faint smile crossed his face as he felt the weight on his shoulders finally disappear.
“Alice, wait a moment,” Evan said.
“What is it?”
Evan pointed toward the swing in the garden, gently swaying in the night breeze. A small card lay beneath it, dropped from one of Lucas’s unopened gifts.
Evan went down briefly, picked up the card, and read it aloud to Alice.
“It’s from Papa Zavian,” Evan said. “He wrote: ‘The heir is safe, the path is clear. Now it’s time for you to think about a second heir, so Lucas won’t be lonely in this palace.’”
Alice laughed brightly and lightly smacked Evan’s shoulder. “Your father really can’t stop planning for the future, can he?”
Evan slipped an arm around Alice’s waist, his eyes gleaming with meaning. “Well, actually, I agree with his idea. What do you think, Mrs. Nathaniel?”
Alice didn’t answer. Instead, she gave him a soft smile
and a small nod in response. Evan leaned in and pressed a long kiss to his wife’s forehead.
