Chapter 57 Chapter 57
Beck

I had abandoned the van in a mad dash across the city streets, using my phone to guide me to her general direction. She was moving fast for a human woman. Desperation had a way of enabling people to persevere. I wasn’t losing her. In all these years I had never lost a charge, but that wasn’t what I was processing right now as I dodged cars and people. I couldn't lose her. The thought of it had me throttling across a street. I hadn’t realized it completely, sure I had ‘wanted’ her but somehow over the last several weeks, Misty had become the anchor of a man once resigned to disappear from existence. I would not go home to Cricket without her mother. There were no other options but to save her.

I caught her scent and pushed past several pedestrians moving into the alleyway beyond them and kept going, letting my shifter speed take over, scenting the wolves following her. I realized they had split up. Seems like it was my lucky day. I let my claws out a few turns later and pivoted around a corner only to sink them into one guard's chest. The blood spattered against my skin and my clothes. I had just shrugged out of the plumber jumpsuit when I realized Misty wasn’t moving fast enough. Instinct had told me something was wrong. It never failed me in the past. I snarled into the guard's shocked face. I swiped down, letting his entrails spill out onto the concrete as the light left his eyes, I let him fall to the ground.

I had to double back and move with a speed that even strained my physique. One would think a bear was slow, but put that power, that strength into the compact form of a human body and you would be surprised. I caught him one turn away from catching her. The scent of Misty’s fear engulfed my senses. He looked over his shoulder in just enough time for me to grab his neck and snap it like a twig. The immediate threat was neutralized. I let the body slump to the concrete as I cleared my head with a few deep breaths, the rain streaming down my skin. My bear pushed me to put eyes on her. My body didn’t feel like my own as I entered the dark backway she had taken to the spot where her body rested prone against the brick, her legs still trembling with the exertion as I rushed to her. I didn’t think I acted.
