Chapter 50 Chapter 50
Misty
It was very late but I put the information Adelaide gave me through my analytics, letting it compile all of the contacts and do the math so that we could both move on to the next step. I stretched and yawned, twisting in my chair to look at Beck who was straddling a chair with his bulging arms crossed over the back as he eyed me.
“What?”
“You're a good friend, but I have to tell you something you may not fully grasp,” I told her.
Her eyes widened but she straightened despite her exhaustion, prepared to listen.
“You can’t ask Adelaide to run,” I started.
“But it’s the only way…”
“No, no it’s not. She is connected to that pack and she needs them, Carter specifically, to allow her to find who she really is. She runs and she loses not just that but the only man who can break the festering bond between Adelaide and Creedon. Not to mention the part of her she is going to have to come to terms with.”
“What do you mean?”
“Carter can sense her wolf, but the other reason is that he has the most honorable reason to protect her and I believe him.”
“What reason, Beck? Because from what I’ve found he is a fraud.”
“You have to understand that packs often appear like normal human communities, heck, most of them live amongst them and none are the wiser. Towns like Divide build their own system within the existing infrastructure. Carter is second in command to that pack, the only person there he can’t protect her from is the Alpha and he is doing everything he can to alleviate that issue. To his pack he is the Beta, and very much the law enforcer of the pack. A peace keeper, a protector, an instrument of order. Divide is our Adelaide's best bet at coming out whole at the end of this. She doesn't know it yet but she has found her second chance at a mate, the universe is righting its error with her.”
I watched Misty’s forehead crinkle in thought before her eyes widened.
“Carter?”
“Yes. I would have been skeptical before talking to him but he didn’t sugar coat anything. Not to mention she dominated a delta today from what he told me. That’s a more dominant member of the pack which means she has the potential to be a very high ranking wolf if she did this before even turning.”
“I think she’s in love with him,” Misty said.
“Thats good. He’s been trying to coax her wolf forward. She doesn't know what she is yet. My guess is that our girl is fighting hard to keep her head above water. Whatever she has found there, it’s working. Disrupting it will only set her back. If all goes well he claims her and breaks the bond Creedon still has on her. If not, she gets her wolf and she becomes stronger and more able to defend herself from what's coming.”
“Adelaide deserves a full life, she may have been ambitious but her heart was always pure. Deep down I’ve always known she wants the kind of love that consumes you. She only relented with Creedon because her dreams replaced that love in her heart. She thought he was the answer to that. I wish she had never got that internship. She would have gone to see Jake before he died. I think that was always Jake’s plan, knowing everything now, but when the opportunity arose he wanted to let her explore that possibility, while her mom always hated her need to strive out in the world. From what she told me and what I gathered from meeting them that one time; he wanted everything for her, whatever her heart desired.”
“You told me Jake and Carter were close from what she told you, that has to account for something. I say we keep tabs on them, they will have the cameras up soon and we can ensure she is safe, and be sure by his actions that he treats her well. If things don’t look good we can revisit her leaving. But that brings another thought to the table,” I pointed out.
“Whats that?”
“You should plan to leave. Get away from The Blacks. Once Creedon is handled, you should start thinking about a new life, in a place where Cricket can thrive and you never have to worry about who is banging on your door in the middle of the night.”
Misty bit her lip, her eyes looking at the floor as those words probably hit like a punch to the gut. Her eyes raised, meeting mine and she nodded. Her mood somber, she stood, walked to the fridge, and grabbed a beer before she made her way to her bedroom.
