Chapter 59 What Sera Knows

Chapter 59 What Sera Knows
She is waiting in the east courtyard at nine PM.

No girls. No performance of warmth. Just Sera standing near the far wall in a dark coat with her coldfire ability running steady and deliberate around her in a perimeter that I feel against my witchcraft from twenty metres away, not threatening, defensive, she has sealed the space against anyone listening in.

I walk through the perimeter and feel it close behind me and it is cold and precise and thorough and I understand for the first time in eight weeks of knowing Sera Vance exactly how powerful she actually is when she is not managing that power down to something socially acceptable.

"You came alone," she observes.

"You asked me to," I reply.

"Rhydan knows you're here?" she asks.

"He knows I'm meeting a source," I say carefully. "He doesn't know it's you."

She looks at me for a moment and something moves in her face that is not the composed warmth and is not the cold calculation and lives in the complicated space between them... a look that carries the specific weight of someone who is about to do something they cannot take back.

"The concealed presence," she says. "I will tell you who it is. But first you need to understand the context or the name alone will send you in the wrong direction."

"Then give me the context."

She folds her arms. "Eighteen months ago, Elder Valecrest approached my family with a modification to the original binding arrangement. Not the standard suppression working, something more complex. He wanted a concealment specialist embedded at Northveil before Rhydan's nature fully presented." She pauses. "Someone whose concealment ability was strong enough to be undetectable by standard supernatural awareness. Someone who could monitor the development from inside the academy without triggering Bram's council detection."

"He planted someone here before Rhydan's nature even surfaced?" I ask. It sounds ridiculous but what's not to expect from someone like Rhydan's grandfather?

"He has been preparing this for a very long time," she says.

"Did your family provide the specialist?" I ask.

"No," she says. "We declined that part of the arrangement. Concealment work is not a Vance family ability." She pauses. "He found someone independently."

"Who?" I ask.

She looks at me steadily.

"Someone who agreed to the arrangement not because of Elder Valecrest's agenda," she says carefully, "but because of their own. Someone who has been inside Northveil for two full years, not just this term." She pauses. "Someone who enrolled as a student."

The courtyard is very cold and very still inside her perimeter.

"A student," I say slowly, "who has been here two years. With concealment ability strong enough that Bram's council detection did not flag them." I think about the students I know, the faces, the house placements, the abilities I have catalogued and filed and noticed. "Who enrolled before Rhydan's nature started surfacing."

"Yes," she confirms.

"And who had their own reason for being here beyond Elder Valecrest's brief..."

"Yes," she says again.

"Sera," I say. "Tell me directly who it is."

She looks at me with those sharp eyes and the coldfire perimeter holding steady around us and the specific expression of someone who has just stepped off a ledge and is waiting to find out what the landing feels like.

"Her name is Nox," she says. "She is in Dragon Shifter house. You have seen her. You have probably not noticed her specifically because her concealment ability extends to social perception. She becomes unremarkable to people around her passively."

"Her own reason for being here," I press. "What is it?"

"She is Drevari," Sera says. "Not aligned with the faction that sent operatives to the game, a different branch. A branch that broke from the original doctrine twenty years ago." She pauses. "A branch that does not want to weaponise dual natured supernaturals."

"Then what do they want?" I ask.

"To prevent the weaponisation," Sera says. "By anyone. Including Elder Valecrest." She holds my gaze. "Nox has been inside Northveil for two years watching Elder Valecrest's preparation and feeding information back to her branch. She is not your enemy."

"She has been listening to every conversation we have had."

"Yes," Sera says.

"She heard everything in the archive. In the restricted section. In Bram's quarters."

"Yes she did," Sera confirms.

"She heard Rhydan and me on the practice rink bench this afternoon," I say very quietly.

Sera's expression shifts slightly. "What did you discuss on the practice rink bench?"

I look at her.

She reads my silence.

"The anchoring," she says flatly. "You discussed what to do with the anchoring."

"Yes."

Sera closes her eyes for one second.

Opens them.

"Then Nox knows the forty-eight hour window," she says. "And if she reports it to anyone, Elder Valecrest moves the tribunal forward and the window closes."

The courtyard is completely silent inside the coldfire perimeter.

"We need to find her, before she reports anything."

"I know," Sera says.

"Can you locate a concealment ability with your coldfire?" I ask.

She looks at me with an expression that is sharp and alive and something underneath it that looks like the specific satisfaction of someone who has been waiting to be asked exactly this question.

"A concealment ability," she says carefully, "is a supernatural working held constantly against the environment. Coldfire dismantles running workings." She pauses. "If I get close enough to her, yes. I can pull the concealment down."

"Then we need to find her tonight. Before she has the chance to pass anything on."

Sera looks at me across the cold courtyard with the perimeter holding steady around us and her coldfire burning low and controlled and ready, and for this one specific moment, whatever she is and whatever she wants and whatever agenda she is still running that I have not seen the shape of, she and I are pointed in exactly the same direction.

"Yes," she says simply. "We do."

She drops the perimeter.

The cold courtyard air rushes back in.

And somewhere in the academy building above us, in the Dragon Shifter corridor or the east wing or any of the dozen places a student with two years of concealment practice could be completely invisible, Nox is sitting with the forty-eight hour window in her head and deciding what to do with it.

We have to find her first.
