Adjusting to Parenthood
The first few days after Lyra’s birth passed in a blur of exhaustion, wonder, and quiet moments of realization.
Lila had expected sleepless nights, endless crying, and a steep learning curve—but nothing could have truly prepared her for the sheer depth of love she felt every time she looked at her daughter.
She was utterly, irrevocably in love.
Ethan, too, had changed.
He had always been protective, always made sure she was safe. But now, there was something new in him, something deeper.
He hovered constantly—not in an overbearing way, but in a way that made it clear he wasn’t going to let a single moment pass him by.
Whether it was watching over Lyra as she slept, rocking her gently when she fussed, or making sure Lila had everything she needed, Ethan was always there.
And Lila adored him for it.
On the third morning, Lila woke to find Ethan already up, sitting in the rocking chair by the fireplace with Lyra cradled in his arms.
The sight made her heart swell.
Ethan, the man who once ruled his world with sharp intelligence and unwavering strength, now looked completely and utterly soft.
His entire world was wrapped up in the tiny bundle he held.
He hadn’t noticed her yet.
Lila stayed still, watching him.
He traced slow, soothing circles over Lyra’s back, his voice barely above a whisper.
“You’ve got your mama’s nose,” he murmured, smiling to himself. “And her stubbornness, I bet.”
Lila bit her lip, warmth spreading through her chest.
Ethan continued, unaware of her gaze.
“I hope you get her kindness. The way she makes people feel safe.” His thumb brushed over Lyra’s tiny hand. “And I really hope you don’t inherit my temper.”
Lila chuckled softly, finally making her presence known. “I heard that.”
Ethan turned, a sheepish smirk on his lips. “Well, it’s true.”
Lila stretched, wincing slightly at the lingering soreness in her body before shifting to sit up.
Ethan was already by her side in an instant. “You should rest.”
Lila rolled her eyes. “I have been resting. I just want to hold her.”
Ethan hesitated but eventually placed Lyra into her waiting arms.
Lila sighed in contentment as their daughter nuzzled against her. “She gets more beautiful every day.”
Ethan sat beside her, his eyes never leaving them. “So do you.”
Lila huffed a laugh. “I probably look like I haven’t slept in days.”
Ethan smirked. “You do. And you’re still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”
Lila softened, leaning into him. “You’re going to spoil me with words like that.”
Ethan pressed a kiss to her temple. “Good.”
Later that afternoon, Margaret stopped by to check on them.
She eyed Ethan as he hovered near Lila, watching her closely as if she might break at any moment.
Margaret snorted. “You’ve turned into a mother hen, I see.”
Ethan straightened, crossing his arms. “I’m just making sure everything is alright.”
Margaret rolled her eyes. “Lila’s fine. The baby’s fine. You, however, are in desperate need of sleep.”
Ethan frowned. “I’m not tired.”
Margaret gave him a look. “You’re dead on your feet, boy. Go rest before you fall over.”
Lila smirked. “She’s right, you know.”
Ethan exhaled but didn’t argue. “Fine. But wake me if you need anything.”
Lila smiled, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek. “Go.”
Ethan hesitated for only a second before trudging toward the bedroom, muttering about how he didn’t need rest.
Margaret smirked. “Stubborn as ever.”
Lila chuckled. “That makes two of us.”
Margaret nodded approvingly. “You’ll need that stubbornness. Parenthood is no easy thing.”
Lila exhaled, looking down at Lyra, who was sleeping peacefully in her arms. “I already know that.”
Margaret softened. “You’re doing well, Lila. Better than most.”
Lila blinked, caught off guard by the rare compliment. “Thank you.”
Margaret patted her shoulder. “Just remember—babies don’t need perfection. They just need love.”
Lila nodded, her chest tightening with emotion.
Love.
That, she could give.
That, she would always give.
As the day faded into night, Lila lay in bed, watching as Ethan stirred beside her.
He had slept most of the afternoon and was now fully awake, his blue eyes clear and alert.
He turned to her, his gaze settling on the sleeping baby between them. “She’s really ours.”
Lila smiled. “She is.”
Ethan exhaled, running a gentle hand over Lyra’s tiny back. “It still doesn’t feel real.”
Lila reached for him, intertwining their fingers. “It will.”
Ethan turned his gaze to her, love shining in his eyes. “I love you, Lila.”
Lila smiled, squeezing his hand. “I love you too.”
They lay there, wrapped in the warmth of their love, their family complete.
And in that moment, Lila knew—
This was the happiest she had ever been.
