The Final Hours

The contractions were no longer something Lila could ignore. They came in steady waves now, stronger, more insistent, leaving her breathless with each one. Time had blurred into something unrecognizable—minutes, hours, it was all the same.

Ethan stayed close, never letting go of her hand, his grip firm yet gentle, grounding her in the storm of pain that pulsed through her body.

“You’re doing so well, love,” he murmured against her forehead, brushing damp strands of hair away from her face.

Lila exhaled shakily, gripping his hand tighter as another contraction rippled through her. “Remind me… to never let you do this to me again,” she gasped.

Ethan let out a strained chuckle. “Duly noted.”

Sarah knelt beside the bed, her practiced hands checking Lila’s progress. “You’re almost there,” she assured her. “The baby is moving into position.”

Lila sucked in a sharp breath as a stronger contraction hit, her nails digging into Ethan’s skin.

He didn’t flinch.

Margaret appeared in the doorway, a towel draped over her arm, her usually stern face softened with something that looked suspiciously like concern.

“I’ve got fresh water and linens,” she announced.

Sarah nodded approvingly. “Good. We’ll need them soon.”

Lila groaned as another contraction hit, harder than the last. She arched her back slightly, biting down on her lower lip. “Oh God—”

Ethan kissed the side of her head, his voice soothing. “Breathe, Lila. Just like we practiced.”

She tried, she really did, but the pain was unlike anything she had ever experienced.

Sarah placed a calming hand on her knee. “You’re strong, Lila. Trust your body. It knows what to do.”

Lila let out a shuddering breath, nodding weakly.

Ethan wiped a cool cloth over her forehead. “I’m so proud of you,” he whispered.

She met his gaze, her vision slightly blurred with tears. “Don’t—” She swallowed thickly. “Don’t let go.”

Ethan squeezed her hand. “Never.”

The hours stretched on, the storm of labor intensifying.

Lila lost herself in the rhythm of it, in the rise and fall of pain, in the murmurs of encouragement from Ethan and Sarah.

At one point, she felt exhaustion begin to creep in, her body trembling with the effort. “I can’t,” she whispered, eyes squeezing shut.

Ethan pressed his forehead to hers. “Yes, you can.” His voice was steady, firm, full of love. “You’ve come this far, Lila. You can do this.”

Sarah nodded. “The baby is almost here. Just a little more.”

Lila let out a soft sob, overwhelmed, afraid, determined.

Then another contraction hit, sharper than any before, and suddenly, her body took over.

She gasped, fingers tightening around Ethan’s. “Ethan—”

“I’m here,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.

Sarah’s tone was firm but encouraging. “It’s time, Lila. When you feel the next wave, I need you to push.”

Lila clenched her jaw, nodding weakly.

Another contraction hit, and she bore down, pushing with everything she had.

The pain was blinding, splitting her in two.

Ethan murmured soft reassurances in her ear, his grip unrelenting, his strength becoming hers.

Again.

And again.

She pushed until she thought she had nothing left.

And then—

A cry.

A loud, piercing wail filled the room, cutting through the exhaustion like sunlight through a storm.

Lila gasped, her whole body shuddering with relief as she collapsed back against the pillows, tears slipping down her cheeks.

Sarah moved swiftly, wrapping the tiny, wriggling newborn in a soft cloth, her smile wide.

“You did it, Lila.”

Lila let out a breathless laugh, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “Oh God—”

Ethan was frozen beside her, his eyes locked on the small bundle in Sarah’s arms, his grip on Lila’s hand still firm but trembling.

“Would you like to hold your daughter?” Sarah asked, her voice gentle.

Daughter.

Lila’s breath hitched.

Ethan swallowed hard, nodding.

Sarah placed the tiny newborn in his arms, and Lila watched as the most powerful man she had ever known crumbled in an instant.

Ethan stared down at their daughter, his blue eyes wide with wonder, his throat bobbing as if he couldn’t quite find the words.

“She’s perfect,” he whispered, his voice hoarse.

Lila reached for her child, her arms feeling like they weighed a thousand pounds, but the moment Ethan placed their daughter in her arms, nothing else mattered.

A tiny face, delicate and pink, scrunched up in protest before slowly relaxing against her mother’s warmth.

Lila let out a broken laugh, her tears falling freely now. “She’s beautiful.”

Ethan kissed the top of Lila’s head, his voice thick with emotion. “You are incredible.”

Lila sniffled, running a trembling finger over the baby’s soft cheek. “We made her.”

Ethan let out a shaky breath. “Yeah. We did.”

Margaret, watching from the side, sniffed discreetly before clearing her throat. “What’s her name?”

Lila and Ethan met each other’s gaze, the answer unspoken but already decided.

Lila smiled through her tears. “Lyra.”

Ethan nodded, pressing a kiss to their daughter’s tiny forehead. “Lyra Bennett.”

The name settled into the air like it had always belonged there.

And in that moment, surrounded by love, warmth, and the quiet miracle of their child, Lila knew—

Their lives had just begun anew.
