Chapter 48 The Angered Trion
In the old lady's room.
After today's embarrassing fiasco, almost everyone in the Titan family looked pale as death.
As soon as Holden stepped into the room, he heard Nina sobbing in the corner, "What are we going to do..."
His heart jumped, "How's Mother?"
Mephist looked past him at Candy behind him, then finally fixed his gaze on Holden's face, "So you do remember you have a mother, and not just a wife."
It was rare to hear Mephist speak in such a cold tone. Holden turned his head awkwardly. Earlier, after he and Mephist had brought their mother back to her room, he'd heard someone had gone to fetch a doctor, so Holden wasn't that worried and went to the garden to find Candy first.
But to everyone else, it looked like he didn't care about his mother at all.
No wonder Mephist was so angry.
"Did Dr. Pascal come?"
He vaguely remembered hearing his mother mention when he came back that Dr. Pascal had been taking care of her health for the past three years. This experienced doctor was a famous physician in the Soth Empire, and everyone had always felt confident leaving the old lady in his care.
But as soon as the words left his mouth, the room fell silent with everyone exchanging glances, until Nina finally broke down in tears. "Dr. Pascal isn't that easy to get! The servant came back saying he left our family's estate half a month ago."
"We got another doctor to see Mother, but he actually wanted to treat her with bloodletting. That damned quack! Dr. Pascal said long ago that bloodletting doesn't work, and besides, how could Mother stand it!"
"This..." Holden was stunned, "Then how did we contact Dr. Pascal before? Hurry up and get him back!"
Trion had been sitting by the bed silently crying. At his words, she wiped her eyes, "We can't reach him. It was Anne who invited him to stay with the Titan family. Now that Anne's gone, why would Dr. Pascal stay here?"
It was fine not to mention Anne, but at the mention of her name, Candy thought of her wedding decorations today, and her anger couldn't be contained. She strode forward, raising her hand to point at Trion, "How dare you mention that woman!"
"As Holden's sister-in-law, you had the nerve to make my wedding so shabby just to get revenge on me and Holden for Anne's sake. Are you trying to curse us!?"
Trion's eyes widened in disbelief, "What do you mean shabby... What are you talking about, and what does this have to do with Anne!"
Candy sneered, "Everyone here knows you used to get along well with Anne. For this wedding, I heard from Holden that Mother had plans early on and we didn't need to worry about money, but you turned my once-in-a-lifetime wedding into a joke for the entire noble circle. What will people think of Holden, and what will they think of me!"
"I didn't do anything half-heartedly..."
"Then explain yourself clearly, or I won't let this go!"
"Shut up!" Mephist, seeing his wife being bullied, immediately stood in front of Trion to shield her, looking at Holden with disapproval, "Holden, what are you standing there for? Are you just going to let this woman humiliate your sister-in-law like this?"
"What this wedding could be like, don't you have any idea? Trion worked until late every night to make your wedding happen. She did her best. Did you expect her to use the Titan family's empty treasury to create the same scene as when Anne married in? Come on, if you wanted that so badly, why didn't you ask His Majesty to handle the wedding too when you were begging him!?"
"...Why bring up Anne." Holden rubbed his temples with a headache, "I'll just ask one thing, Trion, making the wedding look like this, are you sure you weren't bribed by someone, or deliberately trying to embarrass the Titan family?"
Trion felt so wronged. She clutched Mephist's hand, tears falling like broken pearls, "Why do you have to suspect me? I've never been in charge of something as big as a wedding before, so I discussed all the specific details with Mother before finalizing them. Mother was there today too, and she didn't say anything. How can you turn around and blame me?"
"What about the flowers for decoration?" Candy sneered, "You say you didn't do things half-heartedly, but the decorative flowers were all wilted. What's that about? Don't think I haven't been to other people's weddings. Even when my brother married my sister-in-law, there was nothing so shabby!"
Trion shook her head helplessly, "There aren't many servants in the manor to begin with. We had to leave some at the entrance to receive the nobles coming to the wedding, and some had to serve in the banquet hall. Where would we get extra hands to take care of these flowers? Not to mention the craftsmen who used to tend the flowers in the greenhouse left Titan Manor long ago. Even if someone wanted to care for them, they wouldn't know how."
"You say you've seen other people's weddings, but the Titan family really can't afford that much money. How could we make it perfect for you? I've already done my best to arrange everything, and yet you still suspect it's some conspiracy between me and Anne. Have you really considered the family's situation?"
Candy snorted disdainfully, crossed her arms, and said coldly, "Don't think acting pitiful means you have no responsibility. Now that those nobles have all left, why are you playing the victim in front of me? If you did something wrong, you should take responsibility. You'd better think about how to beg their forgiveness."
Trion opened her mouth but couldn't say anything for a long time. She didn't understand why Candy seemed unable to hear what others were saying, just living in her own world.
Mephist was also furious and couldn't help pointing at Candy's nose and cursing, "What a low-class woman, can't you understand what people are saying? Trion wasn't targeting you at all. As for why those nobles left, you should ask yourselves why the main characters who should have been in the banquet hall cutting cake and receiving blessings were fooling around in the garden and got caught by a marquis's child. Do you still think this is about the wedding decorations?"
"Why don't you go out and hear what people are saying about the Titan family!"
"When you hear them talking, listen to whether they're discussing premarital affairs in public, or the wedding couple getting caught having sex in the bushes!"
Holden staggered back two steps from the impact of his blunt words, his face pale, "I, I didn't think..."
He quickly couldn't continue.
Everywhere he looked, the Titan family members were looking at him and Candy with disgust, especially Nina. Her crying grew louder and louder, almost lifting the roof, "Holden, why couldn't you just control yourself!"
"Because of the shameful thing you did with her, those young nobles Mother wanted to introduce me to won't talk to me anymore. I really won't be able to get married!"
"I hate you both!"
