Chapter 30 You Forced Him to Death
The old lady's eyes widened in fury. "Giving you the chance to go to the royal capital is my biggest regret!"
Anne smiled sarcastically. "I thought you'd say your biggest regret was letting Holden marry me."
Before the old lady could respond, the door suddenly burst open. Holden stormed up to Anne, grinding his teeth. "You vicious woman!"
"You drove a family elder to his death, and you still have the nerve to make a scene in front of my mother!"
Anne had long lost interest in wasting words on someone like Holden. She turned her head away with some exasperation, her tone cold. "Whether he was driven to death by me or pressured by others with promises to take the fall, why don't you ask your mother?"
"Besides, I was only investigating the assassination attempt on me. He put on a show of guilty suicide in his room—how is that my fault?"
"You do something wrong and then blame the victim for making trouble. There really are fools like you in this world. What an eye-opener!"
Holden was instantly enraged by Anne's mockery. Forgetting that he was no longer her husband, he only wanted to teach her a harsh lesson. "Don't think being some duke makes you so great. At the end of the day, you're still the woman I, Holden, didn't want—trash that any other family would send to a nursing home!"
He raised his hand to strike Anne's face, but she seemed to predict his move. Lifting her skirt with one hand, she spun around, slipping right past him to his back, then kicked the back of his knee.
Holden's leg buckled instantly, and he dropped to one knee on the ground. His eyes filled with shock and anger as he turned to look at Anne, having forgotten in his impulse that she had learned swordsmanship. He could only watch as Anne walked toward the exit without looking back.
"Get back here!" He shouted furiously, but his words carried no authority.
At the doorway, Anne said coldly, "I think Knight Captain Holden should remember his place. We're legally divorced. According to our positions, you have no right to yell at me. If you disrespect a duke again, I'll handle your rudeness the noble way."
"You bit—!"
Before Holden could finish, the old lady rushed over and covered his mouth. She had been crying since he started talking. Her red eyes looked at him with such pain that Holden felt confused and worried.
He wiped her tears as they helped each other up. Anne had already left. The people waiting outside finally rushed into the room.
Dronasat on the sofa with a cigarette, saying nothing. Trion looked around, and finally couldn't help but ask, "Holden, I heard everything in the living room during the day. What I really want to know is, why are you so unhappy with Anne?"
"You left home on your wedding day and were gone for three years. When you came back, you were cold to Anne, brought back another woman, and even did that sort of thing in the greenhouse where you proposed to her. Can't she be upset about it?"
"She's handled everything at home for three years. Not just the estate's affairs—whenever the people on the land had problems, she helped deal with them too. If it weren't for her, who knows how bad this family's reputation would be!"
Holden paused, then turned his face away. "She's my wife. Isn't doing these things her duty?"
"But did you ever respect Anne? Did you ever treat her like a wife?" Trion's eyes filled with tears as she leaned against Mephist. "We both married into the Titan family, but Anne was smart to leave. At least she won't suffer anymore."
Hearing this, Nina's eyes went round with anger. "Trion, what are you trying to say? Are you suggesting our family wronged that woman?"
She added, "It sounds nice to call it divorce, but everyone outside knows she was sent away because her husband didn't want her. If you think her choice was right, why don't you divorce my brother and go back to your little backwater?"
Mephist frowned. His wife was defending Anne, but she wasn't wrong—why was Nina yelling at her? "Nina, is that any way to talk to Trion!"
Then he looked at Holden with a complicated expression. "Holden, I have to say this—you marry a wife to cherish her, not to find a nanny to manage the household. How can you completely ignore her feelings?"
Holden glanced at him. "Mephist, I can't control feelings. When I married her, I definitely loved her. But now, Candy is the only one in my heart. How can I treat her the same way as before?"
"I've decided—after Candy and I get married, we'll immediately apply to go to the eastern battlefield and win back glory for the family!"
