Chapter 167 Just Don't Want to Save the Titan Family Members
The nobles around weren't fools. Seeing the old lady's reaction when she heard about the assassin, they could guess that not only was Anne not making this up, but it was very likely arranged by this pitiful-looking lady herself.
Thinking of this, they looked at Anne with sympathy and concern. After all, marrying into such a family, how much suffering must she have endured? What Anne just said might only be part of it.
The old lady wanted to say more when she heard an elderly voice, "Was someone just talking about me?"
The crowd behind parted to make way, and the person walking over was none other than Dr. Pascal.
Anne was stunned and instinctively looked toward the Marchioness, the host of today's tea party, who smiled at her and pressed her fan against her right cheek when their eyes met.
Anne had learned fan language before, so she understood the Marchioness was answering her question.
Dr. Pascal had indeed been summoned by the Marchioness.
Earlier, when the old lady said Anne had deliberately taken Dr. Pascal away, the Marchioness had quietly called a servant to fetch Dr. Pascal.
That's how this face-to-face confrontation came about.
The old lady, not expecting Dr. Pascal to be right here, shot Anne a resentful look before putting on an innocent expression for him. "Dr. Pascal, I've finally found you, thank goodness... Please, don't refuse to treat my husband just because Anne stopped you. He's innocent!"
Dr. Pascal looked at her coldly, "I never said I was stopped by anyone. Where did you learn to say such things? Right in front of me, you still want to keep slandering our little Annie?"
Anne paused. She hadn't expected Dr. Pascal to still use her childhood nickname in front of everyone. It was really embarrassing.
However, no one else noticed this detail. Everyone followed Dr. Pascal's words and looked at the old lady's suddenly pale face.
"I..." The old lady opened her mouth but couldn't say anything for a long time.
Nina couldn't stand it anymore. She angrily shouted at Dr. Pascal, "If Anne didn't stop you from treating us, why did you leave the Titan family?"
Dr. Pascal squinted at Nina, "Oh, you're that rude brat from the Titan family."
"I left because I look down on you people and don't want to treat you. What does that have to do with Anne!"
"You people don't know gratitude. When Anne was with the Titan family for three years, she managed your broken family perfectly. Even I felt tired watching her. And what did you do? When Holden brought another woman home, not only did you not stop it, you turned around and blamed Anne for not doing enough. Do you have any conscience?"
"You want a female knight commander with military honors to marry your Holden, but you also want to cling to a duke's daughter. I warned Anne before to leave quickly. Thankfully she listened and left with her dowry, not letting you continue to be parasites on her. What, you got addicted to it?"
Anne pressed her lips together. Back when Holden hadn't returned home yet, there was news that he was going to marry Candy. Dr. Pascal immediately rushed to Anne and told her to divorce quickly.
The little old man was so angry his beard bristled. Anne saw it and laughed so hard.
Now Dr. Pascal was standing in front of everyone defending her again. Anne felt warm inside.
"Dr. Pascal, you're getting old, don't be angry."
Dr. Pascal immediately turned and glared at Anne, his eyes full of disappointment, then turned back to stare at the old lady and roared, "Let me tell you, if it weren't for the fact that your useless Holden never touched Anne, I would never let you off so easily. And you dare talk about giving Anne a child? Bah! With your dirty and inferior bloodline, you dare try to pollute a child of the Virlet family!"
"Get lost now. You want me to treat someone from the Titan family? I said it's absolutely impossible!"
The old lady was already stunned by the scolding. Nina couldn't speak either. She had rarely been scolded like this, and now tears filled her eyes, about to fall.
Originally, Holden hadn't allowed them to come find Anne, but Drona remained unconscious. The old lady was worried about her husband, so she finally gritted her teeth and decided to come out and make a scene behind Holden's back.
As long as they made enough of a fuss, those nobles would surely gossip about Anne, thinking she completely disregarded past feelings and let her ex-husband's father go without treatment. Who knew Anne would not only refute everything point by point, but the nobles around her weren't fooled by her words at all. Not a single person came out to blame Anne or offer to help.
Finally, Dr. Pascal's appearance pushed things to an irreversible point. The doctor himself was nearby and directly stated in front of everyone that he left the Titan family because they did wrong, and he looked down on them.
Now not only was there no way to threaten Anne into ordering Pascal to help treat Drona, but they had completely lost face in front of these nobles.
The old lady left the crowd in despair.
She forgot how she climbed onto the carriage or how she and Nina left under everyone's mocking or disdainful gazes. She only remembered that after entering the carriage, the cramped space swayed, making her head spin.
Before losing consciousness, the old lady only remembered Nina screaming in panic, "Mother!"
Seeing the annoying people leave, Dr. Pascal glanced at Anne and turned to leave.
He wasn't that free - he still had patients to treat!
Anne looked at Dr. Pascal gratefully. Only after the little old man had gone far did she turn around and speak somewhat apologetically to the noble ladies around her, "Sorry for wasting everyone's time and making you watch such a scene."
Everyone waved it off. The old lady's scene was much more interesting than any staged drama, especially the mother and daughter's constantly changing expressions - it was quite eye-opening.
Plus, learning so much inside information about this Duke Virlet was worthwhile.
However, after such a disturbance, the tea party couldn't really continue. Anne briefly thanked the Marchioness and left in her carriage.
Anne understood that the next target of concentrated gossip would likely be the Titan family. This could be considered karma.
