Chapter 230 The Gift Reaches
Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty
The Gift Reaches
On a morning in March of the eleventh year — the first morning of the eleventh spring, the spring that came after the tenth year's completed first decade — Lily pressed her palms to the Boston garden soil and felt the gift reaching.
Not reaching toward anything specific. Reaching in the way the gift had always been reaching since the beginning of the world — the fundamental nature of the gift, the quality that was prior to any specific direction or purpose or outcome. The reaching that was what the gift was before it was anything else. The quality of something that had been in the world since the world began to form and had been reaching through every material and every living system and every human carrier since the beginning, not toward any specific endpoint but in the fundamental quality of reaching that was the gift's own most basic nature.
She felt the gift reaching through her palms into the Boston soil and through the soil into the geological foundation and through the geological foundation into the planetary geological network and through the planetary geological network into every geological formation that carried the gift's presence from the Boston bedrock's four hundred and fifty million years to the Fez stone's one hundred and twenty million years to the Southern Alps' two million years to the Varanasi foundation's three to four thousand years to the Kofi node's thirteen years to every other geological presence of the gift in every material in the world.
She felt the gift reaching through the living systems — through the Norwegian forest's eight-thousand-year living succession and through the growing rings of every tree in every forest where the gift had been present long enough to enter the living material and through the soil microorganism networks that carried the gift's presence in the underground biological systems that no one in the network had yet begun to read.
She felt the gift reaching through the network — three hundred and seventy-nine frequencies this March morning, new connections in February and early March, the network's growth continuing at the steady rate of the gift finding the people it needed through the mechanisms available. Three hundred and seventy-nine people in three hundred and seventy-nine specific corners of the world pressing their palms to the oldest resonance they could find and giving the gift's spring in the specific form their specific gift and life and context allowed.
She felt the gift reaching through the archive — the living record holding ten years of the human network's accumulated knowledge and trust and ordinary extraordinary life and seasonal reading and geological reading and tree ring reading and dye-based mapping and temporal stratification and the beginnings of the world's knowing of the gift offered back to the archive by Grace and Ama and the Boston garden itself.
She felt the gift reaching through the seven formal spaces and the eighth node and the informal nodes and the geological nodes and the dialogic nodes and every other form of node that the gift had developed through the people who carried it in the ten years of the formal network's existence.
She felt the gift reaching through Eleanor in the Vermont garden in the forty-third spring's quality, the world's own most natural expression deepening in the Vermont soil one morning at a time, Sarah three miles away reading the full seasonal dimension of the forty-three-year record and giving the gift's spring in the Vermont soil alongside Eleanor in the succession that Eleanor had arranged.
She felt the gift reaching through Ethan in the kitchen with the thirteenth notebook, receiving the summer of the eleventh spring through the anchor bond and holding it in the specific quality of the anchor's full attention and writing what the holding produced in the cramped precise handwriting of someone who had been writing the gift's autobiography for ten years and would be writing it for as many more years as the gift gave its spring in this specific garden with this specific anchor.
She felt the gift reaching through all of it simultaneously. Not separately — simultaneously. The geological and the living and the human and the archival and the nodal and the dialogic — all of it the gift reaching at the same time through every available medium in the same fundamental quality of reaching that was the gift's own most basic nature.
She thought: the gift has been reaching since the beginning. Since before the Saharan sea's sediment. Since before the world had any material for the gift to reach through. The gift's reaching is not a response to the world. The gift's reaching is what the world has always been in the presence of. The world formed in the presence of the gift's reaching. The geological formations formed in the presence of the gift's reaching. The living systems developed in the presence of the gift's reaching. Human beings developed in the presence of the gift's reach. And in the people who carry the gift consciously — in the convergents who press their palms to the oldest resonance they can find and follow the reach — the gift reaches most deliberately and most precisely toward what it has always been reaching toward.
She thought: the world's own most natural expression. That is what the gift has always been reaching toward. In the Fez stone and the Norwegian forest and the Vermont garden and the Boston garden and the Kofi node and the three hundred and seventy-nine network members and all the informal and dialogic and geological nodes and the archive and the chain. All of it is the gift reaching toward the world being more fully itself.
She thought: and the world, in receiving the gift's reaching, reaches back. The Fez stone's one-hundred-and-twenty-million-year source quality offering itself to the gift's human carriers. The Norwegian forest's eight-thousand-year forward motion offered the direction of the gift's work to everyone who stood in it. The Boston garden offers its ten-year knowledge of the gift to the archive's world-knowing layer. The network sang in December of the tenth year with the quality of the world being glad of itself.
She thought: the gift reaches toward the world. The world reaches back. The mutual reaching — the gift toward the world, the world toward the gift — is the most fundamental relationship in the world. The relationship that has been building since the world began to form. The relationship the gift has been giving its spring into for one hundred and twenty million years and longer. The relationship the world has been receiving the gift's spring into and growing more fully itself through.
She thought: and we are the current conscious expression of that relationship. The people who press their palms to the oldest resonance they can find and feel the gift reaching and choose to reach back. The chain. The people who came anyway.
She lifted her palms from the March soil.
The eleventh spring was arriving — she felt it in the quality of the March soil's surface response, the first signs of the spring preparation beginning in the root systems, the direction of the source quality shifting from the forward motion's winter preservation toward the spring's expression quality. The eleventh spring comes up through the ten springs before it, growing from the foundation of all ten, the first spring of the second decade.
She stood in the March garden and looked at the apple tree with its eleventh spring buds just beginning to show at the tips of the branches. Eleven springs. The apple tree in its eleventh spring had the quality of something that had arrived at its most complete expression of what an apple tree in this specific soil in this specific light with this specific quality of foundational support could be. Not finished — the tree would continue to deepen and develop for as long as the tree was alive and the work was given to it. But I arrived. The apple tree had arrived at the quality that ten springs of the gift's support had been building toward.
She thought: the apple tree knows. In its own way, in the specific way of a living tree that has been in a serious sustained relationship with the gift for ten years, the apple tree knows. The tree knows the gift as warm and patient and glad. The same knowing the garden offered in February. The same as the Fez stone holds in geological form across one hundred and twenty million years. The same knowing in every material that the gift has been in relationship with for long enough.
She thought: the world knows the gift. The world has always known the gift. The world knows the gift through every material that has been in the gift's presence for long enough to develop its own knowledge of what the gift is.
She thought: warm. Patient. Glad.
She thought: yes. That is what the world knows. That is what ten years of the Boston garden knows and forty-three years of the Vermont garden knows and eight thousand years of the Norwegian forest knows and one hundred and twenty million years of the Fez stone knows. Warm. Patient. Glad.
She pressed her palms one final time to the March soil.
She thought: the gift reaches. It has always reached. It will always reach. In every material available, at every timescale, through every mechanism, toward the world being more fully what it is. The gift reaches and the world receives and the world grows more fully itself and the world is glad and the gift is glad of the world's gladness and the gladness multiplies in the giving and the receiving and the mutual reaching.
She thought: this is the gift. Warm and patient and glad and reaching. Reaching since before the world was formed. Reaching now. Reaching forward through the medium space's eight-thousand-year directional transmission into every future spring and every future summer and every future October gardener who plants for springs they cannot know.
She thought: the chain continues.
She thought: it always has.
She thought: it always will.
She went inside. Ethan looked up from the thirteenth notebook.
She sat across from him. She took the coffee. She felt the anchor frequency and the network and the gift reaching through everything and the eleventh spring beginning outside the back door.
She looked at him. The grey eyes. Ten years of the grey eyes and she still found new things in them.
"The eleventh spring," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"It is here," she said.
"Yes," he said. He was already writing.
She pressed her palms to the kitchen table and felt the wood's warmth and the gift reaching through everything and the world reaching back and the mutual gladness of the reaching and the receiving and she thought: yes. This morning and every morning. The gift is reaching. The world is receiving. The morning practice in the specific garden in the specific corner of the world. The coffee at seven. The anchor with the notebooks. The crescent moon earrings cold against her neck. The network warms through the connection. The chain continues.
She thought: I am very glad.
She thought: all of it. I a
m glad of all of it.
The gift was reached.
It always had.
It always would.
