Chapter Two Hundred and Ten
What the Forest Holds
She stayed in the Norwegian forest for three days.
This was the right amount of time. Not because the forest required three days to be read — the readings were done in the first two days. But because the forest required three days to be inhabited. To understand the medium space was one thing. To inhabit the medium space — to be present in the quality of eight thousand years of directional forward transmission, to feel the gift moving through the living succession while she was standing in it — that required time that the readings could not compress.
She worked in the forest every morning before dawn. Not pressing her palms to the geological foundation — she had read the medium space's geological quality and understood what it was. She pressed her palms to the living trees. One tree each morning — moving through the oldest section of the forest, each morning a different tree, each tree a specific year of the eight-thousand-year record, each year's transmission quality specific and identifiable and contributing its specific quality to the eight-thousand-year accumulation.
The quality of working in the medium space was different from any working she had done in any of the other spaces. The Edinburgh archive had the deep, settled quality of something that held everything that had been understood. The Ghana sanctuary had the restorative quality of something that received what convergents needed and provided it. The Boston garden had the source quality of something that generated from within its own nature. The Norwegian forest's medium space had the quality of something that was always in motion. Not restless — directed. Moving with the specific certainty of something that had been moving in the same direction for eight thousand years and knew exactly where the direction was going even if the destination had not yet arrived.
On the second morning she felt the network through the connection while she was pressing her palms to a tree that the ring reading identified as approximately three thousand years old. She felt all three hundred and twenty-seven frequencies in the ambient quality — the morning network presence — and she felt what the medium space's quality added to the network's ambient presence.
The medium space put the network in motion.
Not literally — the network was not physically moving. But the quality of the network in the morning ambient presence, felt from within the medium space, was different from the quality of the network felt from the Boston garden or Solaris or any other connected space. From within the medium space, the network's three hundred and twenty-seven frequencies had the quality of something in directional motion. Not holding what they held in static presence. Moving with what they held, carrying it forward in the direction that eight thousand years of living succession had been moving.
She thought: the medium space shows you what the network looks like from the perspective of the direction it is moving. From the Boston garden or the Edinburgh archive or any of the seven formal spaces, the network looks like what it is — a network of connected frequencies, each one contributing its specific quality to the whole. From the medium space, the network looks like what it is becoming — the direction of all three hundred and twenty-seven frequencies simultaneously, the forward motion that the network's work produces, the specific way the world becomes more fully itself through three hundred and twenty-seven people pressing their palms to three hundred and twenty-seven corners of it.
She thought: the first convergent built the medium space first because the medium space shows you where everything is going. Not the content of the destination — the direction. The quality of the direction. The specific reaching of what the gift has always been building toward, visible from within the space that has been moving in that direction for eight thousand years.
She thought: the first convergent stood in this forest eight thousand years ago — or she was standing in a forest that was then being planted, the first generation of what would become this forest — and she felt the direction of the medium space and she understood what the gift was building toward and she built all seven other spaces in the service of that direction. Edinburgh and Kyoto and Accra and Lagos and Wales and Varanasi and Chengdu — all of them in service of the direction that the Norwegian forest's medium space had been moving in for eight thousand years before any of the formal spaces existed.
She thought: the medium space is the first space and the foundation of all the other spaces. Without the medium space the other seven spaces are rooms without a direction. With the medium space they are rooms in a house that is moving toward the world's own most natural expression.
On the third morning she pressed her palms to the oldest tree one more time and felt the eight thousand years of directional forward transmission with the full quality of three days of inhabitation — not just reading the quality but having lived in the quality for three days, the medium space's movement having become familiar in the way of things you have spent three days with.
She thought: I will come back here. The network needs to know this space. Not every member — not all three hundred and twenty-seven. But the people who need the direction. The people who are doing the work of the formal nodes and need to feel where the work is going. The medium space is the navigation. Without the navigation the work continues but without the full quality of understanding the direction of the work.
She thought: Wren should come here. The stratification reading and the medium space's eight-thousand-year living record would produce something that neither the stratification gift nor the medium space had been able to produce alone. Wren reading the layers of eight thousand years of living transmission, the stratification gift moving through eight thousand years of the medium space's forward motion — the quality of what that produced would be extraordinary.
She thought: Grace should read the geological foundation in person rather than remotely. The geological gift in physical contact with the Norwegian forest's bedrock would produce a reading of the medium space's geological quality that the remote reading could not achieve.
She thought: Eleanor should come here. Not yet — the fortieth winter is still doing its work in Vermont, the dissolution still proceeding, the medium quality still arriving. But when the dissolution is complete and the medium quality has fully arrived in the Vermont garden — Eleanor should come to the Norwegian forest and bring the medium quality of the Vermont garden's dissolution to the medium space's eight-thousand-year living transmission. The quality of what that meeting produced — the dissolution arrived at in forty years of human foundational work meeting the directional motion of eight thousand years of living succession — was something she could not predict but was certain would be significant.
She lifted her palms from the oldest tree's bark on the third morning.
She stood in the Norwegian boreal forest in the February light — the trees doing their winter work around her, the root systems active below the frozen ground, the gift's presence moving through the living succession network in the direction it had been moving for eight thousand years — and she felt the network warm through the connection and she felt the medium space warm in the geological foundation below the frozen ground and she thought: the first convergent stood here. Or near here. Eight thousand years ago. She felt the direction of the medium space and she understood what the gift was building toward and she built everything else in the service of that direction.
She thought: and now we stand in the same forest. Eight thousand years later. The same direction. Moving in the same direction that the forest has been moving since the first tree received the gift's presence and transmitted it to the first seedling.
She thought: forward. Always forward. That is the direction.
She thought: the world's own most natural expression. That is where forward leads.
She thought: we are moving there. All three hundred and twenty-seven of us. All eight nodes of the web. All the geological nodes and the living succession of the Norwegian forest and the chain and the archive and the network and the gift's gladness of all of it. Moving there.
She thought: we are not there yet. We will not be there in our lifetimes. It is not a destination that any individual generation arrives at. It is the direction of the whole gift's work since the beginning. Each generation moves further in the direction. Each spring adds to the accumulated summer. Each source deepens. Each dissolution produces the medium quality. Each medium quality is put in forward motion by the Norwegian forest's eight thousand years of directional transmission.
She thought: and the chain brings the next generation who moves further still.
She thought: the chain does not break.
She thought: it never has.
She pressed her palms to the frozen Norwegian ground one final time and felt the eight thousand years of forward motion and thought: forward. Yes. Forward.
She walked out of the forest with Ethan beside her and the network warm through the connection and the February light cold and clear on the Norwegian snow and everything in motion, everyt
hing moving forward, everything exactly as it should be.
