Chapter 40
“You need to pay. You need to pay for the life you stole.”
The words echoed in her head.

A knot formed in her throat and Megan could not help but swallow hard.

The little blonde girl now stood in the middle of the restroom, her soaking wet dress dripping onto the tiled floors.

Her body was shivering but her hollow eyes pierced right at her like they were trying to peer into the very depths of her soul.

“What do you mean to pay for the life I stole?”

Megan asked as the air in the restroom became tensed and it became quite hard for her to breathe.

The little girl did not say anything as she just tilted her head to the right side, her eyes still fixated on Megan.

Her eyes looked dead and it was the fact that she looked like she was not breathing that made Megan even more anxious.

She clutched the neck of her stuffed toy even tighter as if to showcase her anger.

Her lips quivered but Megan was not sure if it was because of the cold or the fact that she may have gotten angry.

“Lair.”

She whispered her eyes going hard and Cleo could not help but notice the look of hate in her eyes.

She may not know much about kids but she could at least tell when a kid was very angry.

“Liar. You killed me.”

The little girl said, her voice reverberating against the field walls.

Her voice came out hoarse and sharp. Almost like she had been possessed by something else.

Megan’s knees buckled as she dropped to the floor in fear.

She stared at the door but this time, her body did not move.

Every instinct in her was telling her to leave the restroom but it felt like her body had a mind of its own.

Then the little blonde child took a step closer. Megan could not understand why she was so afraid of such a small girl but the moment she started to take steps towards her, her entire body heaved as tears stained her chubby cheeks.

Her wet nightdress left a trail of water with the steps she took as she dragged her soaked stuffed toy on the floor making a sickening squelch noise.

“Don’t let her in after 3:00am”

The little girl said coldly, her eyes hollowing.

Then the little girl smiled faintly, making her beautiful blue eyes shine.

If it were not for the situation she was currently in, Megan would have thought of her as nothing but a cute child.

“You did let me in after 3:00am and you let me watch too Megan.”

She said in a soft voice as the smile was still plastered on her face.

However, her words and her smile made Megan sick to her stomach.

The little girl crochet low still maintaining the same sweet smile on her face as she stared into Megan’s eyes, her gaze unwavering.

“You wanted to be her. You wanted to be all of them. You said it yourself. You wanted their lives.”

Megan’s throat went dry as she said those words.

Her world seemed to be crumbling apart ever since she had received that mysterious manuscript in her office.

Megan could not help but think that she had been seeing things even down to the extent that she would dream up that she had somehow become Cleo Ainsley.

I must have slept walked throughout the entire ordeal.

Cleo thought in her mind and Cleo let out a loud scream in surprise.
