Chapter 31 Operation: breakpoint

Chapter 31 Operation: breakpoint
The drive from Lake Garda to Budapest took two days of careful, winding routes.

They avoided main highways where possible, switching vehicles once in Slovenia and again outside Zagreb.

Kai drove the final leg, his hands steady on the wheel despite the scar on his side pulling with every gear change. The pain was manageable now, a constant companion rather than a weakness.

Lena sat beside him, laptop balanced on her knees, monitoring encrypted channels and refining their forged credentials.

In the back seat lay their go-bags, weapons broken down, surveillance gear, and the malware package designed to cripple Specter-2’s local servers.

They arrived on the outskirts of Budapest under a gray autumn sky. The converted manor house, their target sat on a wooded estate twenty kilometers east of the city, surrounded by high walls and discreet security. Officially listed as a private wellness retreat. In reality, it was Specter-2’s forward operating base for consolidating the remaining Circle loyalists.

They rented a nondescript apartment in a quiet suburb as their temporary base. That first night, they ran final checks.

Kai assembled his suppressed pistol on the small kitchen table while Lena worked her magic on the laptop.

“Security is heavier than expected,” she said, frowning at the drone footage she had pulled from a nearby traffic cam hack. “Six visible patrols, biometric gates, and at least two former Veil operators on the grounds. Valeria is confirmed inside...she arrived yesterday with three aides.”

Kai slotted the magazine home with a sharp click. “We stick to the plan. I go in as maintenance technician tomorrow evening during the shift change. You handle the camera loops and comms blackout from the van two kilometers out. Twelve-minute window once I’m inside.”

Lena looked up, worry clear in her eyes. “If anything feels wrong, you abort. No heroics. We still have the option to disappear without this fight.”

Kai met her gaze across the table. “I know. But if we walk away now and she takes the title, everything we bled for becomes pointless. One last operation. Then we burn the identities and go somewhere they’ll never find us.”

Lena stood and crossed to him, sliding onto his lap and wrapping her arms around his neck. “Promise me you’ll come back out.”

He kissed her slowly, deeply, letting the promise live in the touch rather than words. “I promise.”

The next evening, the operation began.

Kai approached the estate on foot through the woods, dressed in a gray maintenance uniform with forged ID clipped to his chest. A tool bag hung from his shoulder, concealing his pistol and the malware drive. Lena’s voice was calm in his earpiece.

“Shift change in four minutes. Cameras will loop for ninety seconds once you reach the service gate. Phantom’s earlier intel was good, the side entrance has a blind spot.”

Kai reached the perimeter fence, cut through the wire in the shadowed section, and slipped inside. He moved with the easy confidence of a worker who belonged there, nodding to a passing guard who barely glanced at him.

Inside the manor, the atmosphere was tense. Staff hurried through corridors. Low voices discussed the public leaks and the power vacuum left by Harbinger’s death.

Kai made his way to the basement server room using the maintenance access codes Lena had prepared. The door clicked open.

He was inside.

“Planting the malware now,” he whispered.

He inserted the drive into the main terminal and initiated the upload. Red warning lights flashed on the screen as the program began corrupting local Eclipse files and planting backdoors.

“Done,” he said. “Extracting.”

Lena’s voice tightened. “Two guards heading your way. Abort to the east service corridor, I’m looping the feed.”

Kai slipped out just as the guards entered the server room. He moved silently down the corridor, but a sudden alarm blared, someone had noticed the malware intrusion.

“Compromised!” Lena warned. “Security converging on your location. Head for the east exit,I’m bringing the van closer.”

Gunfire erupted behind him. Kai returned fire, dropping one operator with a precise shot to the chest. He sprinted toward the east service door, the scar on his side burning with every stride.

He burst outside into the gardens. More guards poured from the main house.

Lena’s van screeched to a stop at the tree line. She leaned out the driver’s window, firing suppressive shots to cover him.

Kai sprinted the final distance and dove into the passenger seat.

“Go!”

The van roared away as bullets stitched the rear panels. Lena drove with ruthless precision, weaving through the estate roads and onto the main highway toward Budapest.

They lost the immediate pursuit after ten kilometers of aggressive driving and two vehicle switches in an underground parking garage.

Back in their suburban apartment, adrenaline still pumping, Lena checked Kai for new injuries while he caught his breath.

“You’re bleeding again,” she said, peeling back his shirt. The old scar had reopened slightly from the exertion.

“It’s nothing,” he replied, but his voice was tight.

Lena cleaned and re-bandaged the wound, then sat back on her heels, looking up at him.

“The malware is spreading. We crippled their local servers and planted the backdoors. Valeria will be delayed at least a few weeks. Maybe months.”

Kai pulled her up into his arms. “Good enough. We did what we came for.”

They held each other in the dim apartment, the weight of the operation slowly lifting.

But as Lena checked her laptop one final time, a new message from Phantom appeared.

“Well done. Valeria is rattled. But she’s accelerating. She plans to claim the title publicly in ten days in Vienna. If she succeeds, Eclipse goes live. One final suggestion: disappear now. Or meet me in Vienna. Your choice, ghost. The war ends when you say it does. — Phantom”

Kai read the message over Lena’s shoulder.

He looked at her, the question clear in his eyes.

Lena took a deep breath, then nodded once.

“One last time,” she said. “Vienna. We stop her from claiming the title. Then we burn everything and never look back.”

Kai pulled her close, kissing her forehead.
