Chapter 27 The handover 2
Chapter 27 The handover 2
The drive to Milan took six tense hours under overcast skies.
Kai sat in the passenger seat of the black sedan, his side heavily bandaged and taped, a fresh dose of painkillers keeping the worst of the fire at bay.
Harbinger was secured in the trunk, gagged, blindfolded, and chained with enough sedative to keep him quiet but alive. Lena drove, eyes constantly flicking between the road, the mirrors, and her laptop mounted on the dash.
They had abandoned the vineyard safe house at first light, rigging the building with delayed incendiaries to destroy any remaining evidence.
The partial leak was still spreading across European media, causing ripples of panic in political and defense circles. Phantom’s promised broadcast channel would be their chance to strike the decisive blow.
“Phantom confirmed the warehouse coordinates,” Lena said, breaking the long silence. “Abandoned industrial zone on the outskirts of Milan, near the rail yards. He’ll be there at 23:00 with the broadcast rig. We hand over Harbinger, you make the public rejection of the Ghostmaker title, and we trigger the full dead-man’s switch using the codes we forced out of him.”
Kai nodded, staring out at the passing countryside. “And if Phantom betrays us?”
“Then we fight our way out. I’ve got contingencies... backup escape routes, a second vehicle stashed two kilometers away, and remote charges on the sedan if we need a distraction.”
Kai reached over and squeezed her thigh. “We’ve come this far together. We finish it together.”
Lena offered a small, tired smile. “For Elena. For Mia. For the future we’re stealing back.”
They arrived in the Milan outskirts just after sunset. The industrial zone was a graveyard of rusted warehouses, overgrown tracks, and silent factories.
Lena parked the sedan in the shadows of a crumbling brick building two blocks from the target warehouse. They waited, watching.
At 22:45, Kai checked his gear one last time: suppressed pistol, spare magazines, ceramic knife, and the encrypted drive with Reaper’s succession protocol. His side ached with every movement, but the pain kept him sharp.
“Time,” he said.
They moved on foot through the darkness, Lena supporting Kai’s weaker side while he carried Harbinger over one shoulder like a sack. The prisoner had been re-sedated for the short walk.
The target warehouse loomed ahead, a vast, derelict structure with broken windows and graffiti-covered walls. A single light burned inside near the center.
They entered through a side loading door.
Phantom waited in the open space, illuminated by a portable floodlight. He was tall, mid-forties, dressed in dark civilian clothes with a tactical vest. His face was partially obscured by a hood, but his posture screamed former Veil operator, calm, balanced, lethal.
Two large cases sat beside him: one presumably the broadcast rig, the other unknown.
“Ghost,” Phantom greeted, voice low and professional. “You brought the package. Good.”
Kai lowered Harbinger to the concrete floor but kept his pistol trained on Phantom. “The broadcast channel. Show me it works.”
Phantom gestured to the first case. Lena moved forward cautiously, opened it, and powered up the rig, a compact satellite uplink with anti-trace protocols. She ran a quick test. The feed was live, encrypted, and untraceable.
“It’s real,” she confirmed.
Phantom nodded. “Your turn. The rejection statement. Make it clear and public. The Circle’s remaining members will be watching. Then hand over Harbinger.”
Kai stepped into the light of the broadcast rig, Lena positioning the camera. Harbinger was dragged into frame, still bound and now awake, eyes blazing with hatred.
Kai looked directly into the lens, voice steady despite the pain.
“My name is Kai Voss. I was trained by Marcus Kane...the original Ghostmaker known as Reaper. He tried to make me his successor. He murdered my wife Elena and my daughter Mia to control me. Tonight, I publicly and permanently reject the Ghostmaker title and all claims to succession. The protocol is null and void. Eclipse ends here. Every member of The Circle, every compromised official...your names are known. The full files are releasing now.”
Lena triggered the full dead-man’s switch from her laptop.
Files flooded the dark web and selected media outlets: the complete Zurich accords, neural override test records, payment trails, and the master list of Circle members and their influence networks.
The broadcast continued for another thirty seconds as Kai stared into the camera.
“To the new Ghostmaker...whoever you think you are...come find me. The ghost is waiting.”
He stepped back. Lena cut the feed.
Phantom clapped slowly. “Impressive. The Circle is already fracturing. Now… Harbinger.”
Kai dragged the prisoner forward and shoved him toward Phantom.
Phantom caught Harbinger by the collar, then suddenly drew a pistol and put two rounds into the man’s chest.
Harbinger gasped, eyes wide with shock, and collapsed.
Kai and Lena raised their weapons instantly.
Phantom lowered his gun and raised his free hand. “Relax. He was always going to die tonight. He ordered too many of my friends killed over the years. Personal debt settled.”
Lena kept her pistol trained on him. “The deal was alive.”
“Deals change,” Phantom said calmly. “But I kept my end. The broadcast went global. The files are spreading faster than they can contain. Eclipse is crippled for months, maybe years.”
Kai stepped forward, pain flaring in his side. “Who are you really? Why help us?”
Phantom pulled back his hood, revealing a scarred face and cold blue eyes. “Codename Phantom. Real name doesn’t matter anymore. I was Reaper’s second-in-command before I saw what the project was becoming. I tried to warn Elena quietly...too late. When you started your war, I decided to help from the shadows. But understand this: the succession protocol isn’t dead just because you rejected it on camera. The system is automated. Someone else will try to claim the title soon. You’ve bought time, not victory.”
Lena lowered her pistol slightly. “Then what now?”
Phantom gestured to the second case. “Inside is a new set of identities, untraceable funds, and coordinates for a safe extraction out of Europe. Take it and disappear while you still can. The Circle’s remnants will hunt you both relentlessly.”
Kai shook his head. “We’re not done. There’s still a new Ghostmaker out there.”
Phantom smiled thinly. “There always is. But tonight, you struck the heart. Rest. Heal. The war isn’t over... it’s just changing shape.”
He turned and walked toward a side exit, melting into the shadows without another word.
Lena quickly checked Harbinger, dead. She then opened the second case, confirming the documents and funds.
Kai stood over Harbinger’s body for a long moment, the weight of everything settling on him.
“We did it,” Lena said softly, coming to his side. “The leak is out. The title rejected. Harbinger is gone.”
Kai nodded, but his eyes were distant. “Reaper’s shadow is still here. The protocol. The new Ghostmaker. It won’t end until every piece is burned.”
Lena slipped her arm around his waist, supporting his weight as they headed for the exit.
“Then we burn it. Together. But first, we get you real medical help. Milan has contacts. Then we disappear for a while. Regroup.”
They stepped out into the night air.
Sirens wailed in the far distance, the Circle’s response or ordinary police, it didn’t matter.
The ghost had publicly rejected the crown.
But the shadows still whispered his name.
As they drove away from the warehouse in their backup vehicle, Lena glanced at Kai.
“What now?”
Kai looked out at the lights of Milan, the pain in his side a constant reminder of how close they had come.
“We heal. We watch. And when the next Ghostmaker rises…”
He loaded a fresh magazine into his pistol.
“…we put him down for good.”
The car disappeared into the Milan night.
