Chapter 198 – The Man Behind It All
Chapter 198 – The Man Behind It All
POV: Lila
The city didn’t sound like a city anymore.
It sounded like war.
Gunfire echoed from every direction, sharp bursts that overlapped with distant explosions and the constant hum of chaos. Smoke rose in thick columns across the skyline, turning the night into something darker, heavier.
Everywhere I looked, something was burning.
“This way,” Enzo said, already moving.
No hesitation.
No pause.
Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.
We followed.
Dante on one side of him. Luca just behind. Marco covering our rear.
And me—
Right in the middle of it.
Not watching anymore.
Not staying back.
Part of it.
“Where are we going?” I asked, keeping pace.
“The center,” Enzo replied.
“You said that before,” Dante added. “Be specific.”
Enzo didn’t slow down.
“The council doesn’t operate from one place,” he said. “They rotate. Keep everything hidden.”
“Then how do you know where to go?” Luca asked.
“Because they’re not hiding anymore.”
That sent a chill through me.
“What changed?” I asked.
Enzo’s gaze stayed forward.
“They think they’ve already won.”
The confidence in that statement made my chest tighten.
“Then we prove them wrong,” Dante said.
Enzo didn’t respond.
But I felt it.
That shift again.
That focus sharpening.
We turned onto a wider street, one that should have been crowded, busy, alive.
Now—
It was empty.
Abandoned.
Except for the bodies.
Scattered.
Silent.
And the men standing at the far end.
Waiting.
“They’re expecting us,” Marco said.
“Of course they are,” Enzo replied.
No one slowed down.
No one hesitated.
Because at this point—
There was no turning back.
“They’re blocking the entrance,” Luca said, nodding toward the large building behind them.
It stood taller than everything around it.
Dark.
Unmarked.
But something about it—
It felt important.
“Heavy security,” Dante added.
“Not enough,” Enzo said.
Then—
Gunfire erupted.
Both sides moved at once.
Bullets cut through the air, loud and fast, forcing us into motion.
“Cover!” Marco shouted.
We split instinctively.
Dante and Enzo pushing forward.
Luca and Marco taking the sides.
I dropped behind a low barrier, my heart racing as shots hit the concrete inches away from me.
“They’re not holding back,” I said.
“They can’t afford to,” Dante replied.
I peeked over the edge.
Counted.
Too many.
But not impossible.
“They’re guarding something,” I said.
“Yes,” Enzo said. “Him.”
My grip tightened on the gun.
“The leader,” I said.
“Yes.”
A bullet hit the edge of my cover, sending dust into my face.
I flinched but stayed focused.
“Then we push through,” I said.
“We break their line,” Dante added.
Enzo nodded once.
“Together.”
That word again.
Together.
We moved.
Fast.
Coordinated.
Dante took the lead, drawing fire.
Enzo flanked, precise and controlled, taking down targets before they could reposition.
Luca covered angles we couldn’t see.
Marco kept pressure on the outer edges.
And me—
I followed.
Not behind.
With them.
I saw an opening.
Took it.
Fired.
One down.
Another stepped forward.
I adjusted.
Shot again.
He dropped.
“Keep moving!” Dante called.
We advanced.
Step by step.
Shot by shot.
Breaking through their line.
For every one of them that fell—
Another tried to take their place.
But it wasn’t enough.
Because we weren’t slowing down.
“Left side clear!” Luca shouted.
“Push center!” Enzo replied.
We closed the distance.
The entrance was right there now.
Just a few steps away.
“They’re falling back!” Marco said.
“Into the building,” Dante added.
“Let them,” Enzo said.
We didn’t stop.
We followed.
Inside.
The doors were already open.
Waiting.
Like everything else tonight.
The moment we crossed the threshold—
The noise outside faded.
Replaced by something else.
Silence.
Heavy.
Controlled.
“They want us inside,” I said.
“Yes,” Enzo replied.
“Then this is it,” Dante said.
“No more distractions.”
“No more traps,” Luca added.
Enzo didn’t answer.
Because we all knew—
This was the trap.
And we were walking into it anyway.
The hallway stretched ahead, dimly lit, empty except for the faint echo of our footsteps.
No guards.
No resistance.
Too easy.
“Stay sharp,” Marco said.
“Always,” Dante replied.
We moved deeper.
One step at a time.
Until—
A door.
At the end of the hall.
Closed.
Waiting.
“That’s it,” Enzo said.
“How do you know?” I asked.
He looked at it.
Like he could see through it.
“Because they want us to open it.”
Dante stepped forward.
Hand on the handle.
“Ready?” he asked.
No one answered.
We didn’t need to.
He pushed the door open.
And everything changed.
The room was large.
Open.
And filled.
Men lined the sides, armed, silent, watching.
Not attacking.
Not moving.
Just… waiting.
And at the center—
A single figure.
Seated.
Calm.
Unbothered.
Like the chaos outside didn’t exist.
Like we were expected.
“Welcome,” he said.
His voice carried easily through the room.
Smooth.
Controlled.
My chest tightened.
“That’s him,” I whispered.
“Yes,” Enzo said.
The man stood slowly.
Tall.
Composed.
His gaze moved across all of us.
Taking everything in.
“You took your time,” he said.
“We had things to finish,” Dante replied.
A faint smile.
“Yes,” the man said. “I saw.”
My grip tightened.
“You’re behind all of this,” I said.
His eyes shifted to me.
Interested.
“Not all,” he said. “Just the important parts.”
“You call this important?” I shot back. “You’re destroying everything.”
“I’m rebuilding it,” he corrected.
“By killing everyone?”
“By removing what no longer works.”
Anger flared in my chest.
“That’s not your call to make.”
“It is now.”
Dante stepped forward.
“This ends here.”
The man smiled slightly.
“No,” he said. “This is where it begins.”
Enzo moved beside Dante.
Close.
Steady.
“You’re not the council,” Enzo said.
“No,” the man replied. “I’m what comes after it.”
Silence.
Heavy.
“What do you want?” Luca asked.
The man’s gaze sharpened slightly.
“Control,” he said simply.
“And you think this is how you get it?” Marco said.
“It’s how you keep it.”
Dante’s jaw tightened.
“You’ve already lost.”
The man tilted his head slightly.
“Have I?”
Before anyone could respond—
He raised his hand.
And everything exploded.
Gunfire erupted from every side.
Louder than before.
Closer.
Relentless.
We moved instantly.
Cover.
Return fire.
Chaos.
The room turned into a battlefield in seconds.
“They’re everywhere!” Marco shouted.
“Hold the line!” Dante replied.
I dropped behind a pillar, firing at the nearest threat.
One down.
Two.
More coming.
“They’re not stopping!” Luca said.
“They don’t need to,” Enzo replied. “They just need to delay us.”
“For what?” I asked.
No answer.
Because in that moment—
I saw it.
The man at the center.
Still standing.
Still calm.
Walking backward.
Toward another door.
“He’s leaving!” I shouted.
Dante turned.
Saw it.
“Enzo!”
Already moving.
Both of them pushed forward, cutting through the chaos.
I followed.
No hesitation.
We broke through the line.
One step.
Two.
Closer.
Almost there—
The door behind the man opened.
He stepped through.
Turned once more.
And smiled.
Then—
It slammed shut.
Locked.
“Move!” Dante shouted.
We reached the door.
Tried it.
Solid.
Reinforced.
“Step back,” Enzo said.
We did.
He raised his weapon.
Fired.
The lock shattered.
The door swung open.
And we stepped through—
Into darkness.
The lights flickered on.
Slowly.
Revealing something none of us expected.
My breath caught.
Because this—
This wasn’t just a room.
It was a control center.
Screens.
Maps.
Every territory.
Every family.
Every movement.
All of it displayed.
Tracked.
Controlled.
“They’ve been watching everything,” Luca said.
“Not just watching,” Enzo replied. “Directing.”
The realization hit hard.
“They planned all of it,” I said.
“Yes.”
But the man—
He wasn’t there.
Gone.
Again.
“Where is he?” Dante demanded.
Before anyone could answer—
A voice echoed through the room.
From everywhere.
Calm.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
“You’re too late.”
My chest tightened.
“No,” I said.
The screens flickered.
Changed.
And what appeared—
Made my blood run cold.
Because it wasn’t just the city.
It wasn’t just the war.
It was something bigger.
Something worse.
And in that moment—
I realized the truth.
This wasn’t the final battle.
It was only the beginning of something far more dangerous.
And we had just stepped right into it.
