Chapter 186 – The War He Chose
Chapter 186 – The War He Chose
Lila POV
“Enzo…?”
The name slipped out of my lips before I could stop it.
The man at the end of the hallway didn’t move.
Didn’t react.
Didn’t answer.
But my heart—
My heart already knew.
The way he stood.
The way he held the gun.
The silence around him.
It felt like him.
It felt too much like him.
“Don’t,” Dante said sharply, stepping slightly in front of me.
“Don’t what?” I whispered.
“Don’t say his name.”
My eyes didn’t leave the man.
“Why?”
“Because if it’s not him—”
“It is.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
The man finally shifted.
Just a small movement.
But enough to make my breath catch.
“Lower your weapons,” Dante ordered the guards.
“No, boss—”
“Do it.”
There was hesitation.
Then slowly, one by one, the guards lowered their guns.
The man in black watched everything.
Silent.
Still.
Then—
He took a step forward.
My heart slammed hard.
Another step.
Closer now.
Close enough for the light to touch part of his face—
But not enough.
Not enough to see clearly.
“Say something,” I said, my voice trembling despite myself.
Silence.
“Please…”
My fingers clenched slightly at my sides.
“Just… say something.”
A pause.
Long.
Heavy.
Then—
His voice came out low.
Familiar.
And it broke something inside me.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
My breath hitched.
It was him.
It had to be him.
“Enzo…”
Dante stepped in front of me again.
“Stop.”
“I need to see him.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Yes, I do.”
“This is not the time.”
“It’s never the time with you!” I snapped.
Silence filled the hallway again.
The man in black exhaled slowly.
Then—
He lowered his gun.
“I didn’t come here for a reunion.”
My chest tightened.
“Then why are you here?” Dante asked coldly.
The man tilted his head slightly.
“You already know.”
Dante’s jaw clenched.
“They moved faster than expected.”
“So did you,” the man replied.
Silence.
Something passed between them.
Something I didn’t understand.
“What is going on?” I demanded.
Neither of them answered.
My patience snapped.
“Enough!” I shouted. “I’m not invisible. I’m right here. Stop talking like I don’t exist.”
The man finally looked at me.
Really looked.
And that—
That was enough.
Even in the shadows.
Even with the distance.
I knew.
It was him.
But…
Not the Enzo I remembered.
There was something different.
Something colder.
Something heavier.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said again.
“I could say the same thing to you.”
Silence.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” I continued.
“Yes.”
“And yet here you are.”
“Yes.”
My chest tightened painfully.
“Do you know what you did to me?”
A pause.
Then—
“Yes.”
The answer came too easily.
Too calmly.
It hurt.
“Then why?” I asked. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
His gaze didn’t waver.
“Because you wouldn’t have let me go.”
My breath caught.
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“You don’t.”
“I do,” he repeated.
Silence.
“I would have understood,” I said.
“No, you wouldn’t.”
“Try me.”
“I couldn’t risk it.”
My chest rose and fell faster.
“I had the right to know.”
“You had the right to live.”
“That wasn’t your decision to make!”
“It was.”
Silence.
I shook my head slowly.
“You don’t get to decide that for me.”
“I already did.”
The words hit hard.
Cold.
Final.
I laughed softly.
Bitter.
Again.
“You sound just like him.”
I glanced at Dante.
“Maybe that’s where I learned it,” Enzo replied.
Silence fell again.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
“Explain,” I said. “All of it.”
Enzo didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Dante.
Then back at me.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“You won’t like it.”
“I don’t care.”
A pause.
Then—
“I didn’t disappear to hide.”
My heart tightened.
“Then why?”
“I went after them.”
“The council?”
“Yes.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
I stared at him.
“You’re insane.”
“Maybe.”
“You could have died.”
“I almost did.”
Silence.
“Why would you do that?” I asked.
“Because running wouldn’t solve anything.”
“It would keep you alive.”
“For how long?”
I didn’t answer.
“Do you think they would stop?” he continued. “Do you think they would just let it go?”
Silence.
“They would keep coming,” he said. “For me. For you. For everyone connected to us.”
My chest tightened.
“So you decided to what? Fight them alone?”
“Yes.”
“That’s not bravery,” I said. “That’s reckless.”
“It’s necessary.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
Silence.
“I couldn’t stay hidden forever,” he continued. “And I couldn’t let them control everything.”
“So you became the one hunting them?”
“Yes.”
My breath caught slightly.
“That’s why they call him ‘The Raven,’” Dante said quietly.
I turned to him.
“What?”
“He’s been moving in the shadows,” Dante continued. “Taking down their operations. One by one.”
I looked back at Enzo.
“You… did all that?”
He didn’t answer.
But he didn’t deny it either.
“You’ve been fighting them this whole time?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“While I—”
I stopped.
While I was grieving him.
While I was breaking.
While I thought he was gone.
“You were safe,” he said.
“I wasn’t,” I snapped. “I was falling apart.”
Silence.
“That was the price,” he said.
“For what?”
“For keeping you alive.”
My chest tightened painfully.
“I didn’t ask for that.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you do it?”
“Because I couldn’t lose you.”
Silence.
The words hung in the air.
Heavy.
Real.
And it hurt even more because of that.
“You already did,” I whispered.
Something flickered in his eyes.
But it was gone just as quickly.
“No,” he said. “You’re still here.”
“But not the same.”
Neither of us spoke for a moment.
Then—
Dante stepped forward slightly.
“This isn’t the place for this conversation.”
“No,” I said. “We’re finishing this.”
“You don’t have time,” Dante replied.
“Make time.”
“They’re already inside the mansion.”
“I don’t care.”
“You should.”
“I don’t.”
Silence.
Enzo finally moved again.
Closer this time.
But still not close enough.
“You need to leave,” he said.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I’m not running.”
“This isn’t about pride.”
“This is about truth.”
“This is about survival.”
“I’m done choosing survival over truth.”
Silence.
Then—
A distant shout echoed.
More footsteps.
Closer.
Faster.
“They’re coming,” Dante said.
Enzo’s posture shifted slightly.
More alert.
More dangerous.
“You need to go,” he repeated.
“I’m not leaving you again.”
His gaze softened for just a second.
Then hardened again.
“You don’t have a choice.”
“I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
“I’m staying.”
Silence.
Then—
Enzo exhaled slowly.
“Then stay behind me.”
My heart skipped.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Before I could respond—
Gunshots erupted again.
Closer.
Louder.
And this time—
They weren’t aiming at the walls.
They were aiming at us.
“Down!” Enzo shouted.
I dropped instinctively.
Dante moved fast, pulling me behind cover.
The guards fired back.
The hallway turned into chaos again.
But through all of it—
Through the noise—
Through the shouting—
Through the fear—
I saw him.
Enzo.
Moving like a shadow.
Precise.
Fast.
Deadly.
Not the man I remembered.
But something else.
Something stronger.
Something darker.
The Raven.
And then—
In the middle of the gunfire—
Someone shouted from the other side.
A voice I didn’t recognize.
“Bring the girl alive!”
My heart stopped.
Because I knew exactly who they meant.
And Enzo—
Enzo froze for just a fraction of a second.
Just enough—
To realize this wasn’t just about war anymore.
It was about me.
