Chapter 53 THE SHIELD OF LIFE

Chapter 53 THE SHIELD OF LIFE
The ruin didn't smell of rot anymore.
It smelled of jasmine. Fresh-cut grass and the scent of earth after rain. Dorian forgot how to breathe as he looked down at the baby in his arms. The child's skin, unlike the grey, sickly atmosphere around them, was bright, pink, and alive. That silvery fluid covering him had dried, leaving behind skin soft as powder.
"Dorian..." Kael's voice trembled. He had lowered his rifle and was staring at his boots. "Look at this."
Dorian tore his gaze away from his son and looked down.
Green vines were sprouting from the cracks between the black stones, growing inches by the second. The altar where Serra lay was no longer cold stone; it was a soft bed covered in blooming white flowers. Every breath the baby took seemed to scatter invisible pollen of life into the air.
"He isn't a Void creature," Dorian whispered. His eyes filled with tears. "Vespera was wrong. He isn't destruction. He... he is life itself."
Dorian gently placed the baby, wrapped in his jacket, onto Serra’s chest. "Serra, look. Look at your son. You did it."
But Serra didn't answer.
Dorian’s heart nearly stopped. "Serra?"
Serra’s eyes were closed. Her skin was whiter than marble. Her chest... her chest wasn't moving.
"No," Dorian said. His voice cracked with panic. "No, no, no!"
He placed his hand on her neck. No pulse. Her life force had left her body with that final push.
"Kael!" Dorian shouted. "What's in the bag? Adrenaline? Potions? Bring me everything!"
Kael dumped the contents of the bag onto the floor. His hands shaking, he found a syringe. "This is just human adrenaline, Dorian. It's not enough to bring back an Alpha!"
"Give it to me!" Dorian snatched the syringe and plunged it into Serra’s heart. "You can't leave me," he whispered, pressing his forehead against hers. "Do you hear me? You cannot leave me alone with this child. Don't you dare, Serra!"
(THE SIEGE OF DARKNESS)
Just then, the dead silence outside the temple was broken by a thousand whispers.
"Light... Extinguish the light... It burns..."
Kael looked up. Over the broken walls of the temple, he could see the valley below.
"Dorian," Kael said, his voice cold as ice. "We have a problem."
Dorian didn't look up. He was compressing Serra’s chest. "I don't care. I am not moving from this spot until I bring her back."
"Dorian!" Kael grabbed Dorian’s shoulder and shook him. "Look!"
Dorian turned his head.
The valley... was moving.
Hundreds, thousands of Void Weavers and their skeletal soldiers were flowing toward the temple. Like a black ocean. The life energy radiating from the baby had drawn them like moths to a flame. But this time, they weren't coming to attack; they were coming because they were terrified. They had to extinguish this light.
"There are too many," Kael said, cocking his rifle. "I don't have enough ammo. You have no power. Serra..." Kael swallowed hard. "...Serra is gone."
Dorian looked at Serra's lifeless body and the silver-eyed baby sleeping soundly on her chest.
He had to make a choice. Take the baby and run? Or die beside his wife's body?
"We aren't leaving," Dorian said. He stood up. He drew his sword. His hands were shaking, but his stance was solid. "If this temple is to be my grave, so be it. But I will not give my son and my wife to them."
The shadow army began to scale the temple walls. The first wave poured in.
Kael fired. One, two, three... But they were endless.
A shadow lunged toward the altar, toward Serra and the baby. Dorian swung his sword, but he was too slow. The shadow was about to touch the child.
(THE BABY'S ANSWER)
The baby didn't cry.
The tiny being lying on Serra’s chest opened his eyes. Those silver irises focused on the approaching darkness.
The baby raised his tiny hand.
It wasn't a spell. It wasn't a prayer. It was a pure rejection.
A shockwave of light exploded from the baby's palm.
This light wasn't burning. It was warm. Like sunlight. But to the shadows... to the shadows, it was acid.
The wave of light washed out of the temple. The shadow entities it touched didn't just vanish; they screamed and transformed. Void energy was converted into Life energy. Black smoke turned into white butterflies and dissolved into the air.
Dorian and Kael were thrown to the ground, shielding their eyes from the blinding brilliance.
When the light receded, the temple was clean. No enemies. Just dust motes dancing in the air and the intense scent of flowers.
But that wasn't the real miracle.
The baby lowered his hand. And now, he placed that tiny palm over his mother's heart, right where he lay.
Dorian watched, holding his breath.
A vein of silver light flowed from the baby’s palm into Serra’s chest.
One second. Two seconds.
And then... Serra took a deep, gasping breath.
Air filled her lungs. Her heart began to beat again under that tiny hand.
Dorian collapsed where he stood. He was weeping.
The baby looked at Dorian. In those silver eyes, there was no infant innocence. There was an ancient, wise, and weary look.
I am here, father, it seemed to say. We are here.
Kael dropped his rifle. He slid down the wall and sat on the floor.
"Let's name him 'Atlas'," Kael said with a trembling smile. "Because he just carried the damn world on his back."
