Chapter 26 THE MORNING OF ASHES

Chapter 26 THE MORNING OF ASHES
When the sun filtered through the shattered windows of the palace, the place Serra woke up was not a pillow, but Dorian’s chest.
Every muscle in her body ached. The scramble in the tunnel, the draining effect of the ritual, and that savage union last night... It all left a throbbing fatigue in her bones. But this pain made her feel alive.
Dorian was awake. His fingers were tracing slow, rhythmic circles on her back. His gaze was fixed on the ceiling, but his mind wasn't there; he was likely rebuilding the ruins of the palace in his head.
"Good morning, Alpha," Serra whispered, her voice sleepy and husky.
Dorian turned his head to look at her. That hard, icy glare was gone. In its place was the vulnerability of the morning. "Good morning," he said. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. There was no role in this kiss, only peace. "For the first time..." he said, his voice thoughtful. "For the first time, I wake up to a morning without thinking about the next threat. Just listening to your breath."
Serra smiled, but the hunter inside her was awake. "The threats aren't over, Dorian. They just changed shape. How is Kael?"
A shadow fell over Dorian’s face. He got out of bed. The muscles in his naked back tensed. "We'll find out. Get dressed, Serra. Today, you will enter the Council Hall not as a Luna, but as a partner of this palace. The cleaning begins."
(THE INFIRMARY: THE PRICE OF FAMILY)
The corridors leading to the infirmary were littered with the debris of war. Servants were trying to clean up broken glass and bloodstains. When they saw them, they didn't just bow in respect; there was admiration mixed with fear in their eyes. The display of power last night had turned Dorian from a leader into a demigod.
Valeria met them at the infirmary door. Her face was pale, dark circles under her eyes, and her lab coat was covered in bloodstains. But she stood tall.
"He's alive," Valeria said before Dorian could ask. "He survived the night. But the silver sword passed too close to his lung. Recovery will take weeks."
Dorian let out a deep breath, a mountain of weight lifting from his shoulders. They went inside.
Kael lay motionless in the bed. That massive, boisterous man was now connected to a ventilator, a silent statue.
Dorian took his brother's hand. "I will make them pay for this, Kael," he whispered. "I will root out everyone who did this to you."
Valeria handed a tablet to Dorian. "We took Vespera down to the dungeons. She isn't talking. She's just laughing. As if... as if she hasn't lost."
Serra looked at the data on Valeria's tablet. "If she thinks she hasn't lost, she still has a trump card. Or someone she trusts."
(THE COUNCIL HALL: EXECUTION AND THE NEW ORDER)
An hour later, they were in the Council Hall. But this time the atmosphere was different. No Marius. No Vespera. No Elara. The remaining twelve Council members stood not around the table, but lined up in front of Dorian.
Dorian went to the head of the table. He didn't sit.
"Last night," Dorian said, his voice echoing in the hall. "Some of you betrayed us. Some of you watched. And some of you hid in fear. The traitors are in the dungeon. But the watchers..."
Dorian's eyes locked onto Lorden, an elderly Beta member. "You knew of Marius's plans. And you stayed silent. That is a silent coup."
"Alpha, we only..." Lorden stammered.
"You only protected your own interests," Dorian cut him off. "As of today, the Council is dissolved. The old system is over. From now on, decisions will be made not by voting, but by merit."
Dorian pointed to Valeria. "Valeria is the new Minister of Internal Affairs and Intelligence. Lukas, Chief of Security. And Serra..."
Dorian turned to her. He extended his hand. "...Serra is my Mate and the Voice of the Pack. Her word is my word."
A shockwave spread through the hall. Dissolving the Council? This was a power revolution unseen for centuries. But no one dared to object. Because the seal on Dorian's chest was glowing with a threatening silver light even that morning.
(THE CLUE IN THE SHADOWS: THE OBSIDIAN MIRROR)
After the meeting, Lukas came to them, breathless. He held a black velvet pouch.
"You need to see this," Lukas said. "I found it while searching Vespera's private quarters. It was in a secret compartment."
Dorian took the pouch and dumped its contents onto the table.
It was a palm-sized, pitch-black, smooth stone. An Obsidian Mirror. But it wasn't ordinary. On its surface, the exact same seal on Dorian's chest was carved, but inverted.
"What is this?" Serra asked, hesitant to touch the stone. It radiated a cold energy, as if it were alive.
Dorian's face turned ashen. "This is a communication device. But not modern. It’s from the Shadow Age. My mother... she mentioned these. They were used to speak with the Void Weavers."
"Void Weavers?" Serra frowned. "They are just a legend. I thought they were extinct."
"Vespera was talking to them," Dorian said, looking at the mirror with disgust. "Marius was just a puppet. So is Vespera. The real enemy is on the other end of this mirror."
Just then, the obsidian mirror on the table vibrated. Smoky writing appeared on its surface. In an ancient tongue, but the meaning was clear:
"The seal has cracked. The door is ajar. Prepare, Volcan. We are coming to collect what is ours."
Dorian and Serra looked at each other. The war wasn't over. By defeating Vespera, they had only broken the lock on the door. And now, the darkness behind the door had noticed them.
