A Bridge Uncrossed

Lily stood by the window, staring out at the bustling city streets below. Chicago was different from what she had imagined—larger, louder, colder. Yet, for some reason, it felt like the right place to start over. Her new apartment was modest, but it was hers. For the first time in a long while, Lily allowed herself a moment to breathe. She had made it this far.

The sound of her phone buzzing in her pocket broke her reverie. It was from Eric. The name lit up on her screen, and for a split second, she froze. She hadn’t heard from him in days. He had been one of the first people she’d distanced herself from when she made the decision to leave.

She unlocked her phone, her fingers trembling slightly as she read the message:

“Can we talk? I just want to know you’re okay.”

Lily’s chest tightened. She knew the message wasn’t just about her well-being. It was about him wanting to know where she was, wanting answers. But she couldn’t give him that. Not yet.

She took a deep breath before typing her reply: “I’m fine, just need some space. I’ll reach out when I’m ready.”

It wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the whole truth. Not even close. She still couldn’t tell them where she was. Chicago was her secret for now. She couldn’t risk them finding out. If they knew, they might tell Alex, and that was the last thing she wanted right now.

The buzzing of her phone broke her concentration again. Another message from Eric:

“I understand if you need time. Just please let me know you’re okay.”

Lily bit her lip, her heart aching at his words. She had been so caught up in her own struggle that she had forgotten how much people cared about her, especially Eric. But that didn’t change the fact that she couldn’t open up to him yet. She still wasn’t ready.

With a reluctant sigh, she tapped her screen and called him, needing to hear his voice, but also afraid of what it would bring.

“Hey,” Lily said when Eric answered. She tried to sound casual, but there was a slight tremor in her voice she couldn’t suppress.

“Lily,” Eric’s voice was soft, yet full of concern. “I’ve been trying to reach you. I just… I wanted to make sure you’re safe. You left so suddenly, and we haven’t heard from you. I know you need space, but please, just tell me you’re okay.”

Lily closed her eyes, leaning her forehead against the cool window. She had missed him more than she wanted to admit. Eric had always been the one who could lighten her mood with his jokes, his endless energy. But right now, that energy felt like it was pulling her back into something she wasn’t ready for.

“I’m okay, Eric,” she said, her voice steady but distant. “I just… I need time to figure things out. I’m not in a place to talk about everything yet.”

“I get it,” Eric replied, his voice hesitant. “But Lily, you can’t do this alone. We’re here for you. Whatever you’re going through, you don’t have to face it by yourself.”

Lily bit her lip, fighting the tears threatening to spill. She didn’t want to hear that. She didn’t want to be vulnerable. “I know, Eric. I know you’re all trying to help, but I just need to handle this on my own for now. I can’t explain why, but I just need some space.”

“Okay,” he said quietly. “I respect that. But please, just promise me one thing. When you’re ready, when you’re ready to talk, we’ll be here.”

Lily felt a lump in her throat. She had no intention of coming back anytime soon, but hearing his sincerity made everything feel more complicated. She wasn’t ready to let go of that part of her life, but she couldn’t go back. Not yet.

“Promise,” she whispered. “I promise.”

The line went quiet for a moment, and she could hear the hesitation in Eric’s voice as he spoke again. “I won’t ask you where you are. I don’t need to know. But… just don’t cut us out completely, okay? You don’t have to face this alone.”

Lily swallowed hard. “I won’t, Eric. I just... need time to figure out what’s next.”

“Take all the time you need,” Eric said softly. “But just remember, we’re here, whenever you’re ready.”

She could feel the weight of his words, but she also knew she couldn’t tell him the truth—not now. “Thanks,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll let you know when I’m ready to talk.”

With that, she ended the call, letting the silence fall over her once again. She had made the right decision to keep her distance. She had to. But something inside her, some small part of her, still yearned for the connection she’d left behind.

Lily stood there, staring out at the city once more, trying to push aside the weight of the conversation. She had her own journey to finish. And as much as it hurt, she knew she couldn’t let anyone else get in the way of it. Not even Eric.

The sound of her phone buzzing again snapped her from her thoughts. It wasn’t Eric this time. It was a message from Nadia.

“You sure you’re okay? We miss you. Let us know when you’re ready to talk.”

Lily stared at the message for a long moment. Nadia was just like Eric, so caring, so persistent. She couldn’t let them in yet. She couldn’t. It wasn’t the right time.

She sighed, typing a quick reply: “I’m okay. Just figuring things out. I’ll be in touch soon.”

With one last look at her new apartment, Lily took a deep breath. She wasn’t ready to face her past yet. But she would be. Someday.
