The Blood Ascension

The Blood Ascension
The castle was silent, as though even its stone bones were holding their breath in anticipation.

Azrael moved through the grand halls of Blackthorne Castle, her footsteps hushed by the deep red carpets underfoot. Her handmaidens flanked her like shadows, their presence solemn, their gazes downcast. The flickering torchlight caught the deep crimson of Azrael’s ceremonial robes, making her appear like a wraith moving through the darkness. Her face was a mask of solemn determination.

As they approached the courtyard, the air grew thick with anticipation. The scent of blood and incense wafted through the air, mingling into a heady aroma that clung to the senses and the low drone of chanting could be faintly heard.

She finally stepped into the courtyard.

The courtyard, bathed in the eerie glow of the Blood Moon, was transformed into a sanctified ground for the impending ritual. Azrael's eyes scanned the assembled congregation.

At the head of the courtyard, sitting on a throne-like chair carved from obsidian and adorned with skulls and coiling serpents, was her father, King Valerion. His red eyes gleamed in the moonlight, and though he said nothing, the weight of his gaze was suffocating. Beside him stood High Priestess Lilith, adorned in a flowing gown of blood-red silk, her face concealed by a veil, and a crown of skulls resting atop her head. Her acolytes stood behind her in perfect symmetry—twelve of them, all veiled and dressed in matching crimson, each holding a ceremonial dagger. Among them, Arianna's violet eyes gleamed with some private amusement as she watched from the shadows of her veil.

Azrael’s golden eyes swept over the gathered members of the court. Her uncle, Lord Avalon, stood with arms crossed, a slight frown on his face as he studied the proceedings. The highest-ranking nobles were there as well, dressed in their finest, bearing expressions that ranged from respect to cautious.

In the center of the courtyard, two massive pentagrams had been meticulously carved into the stone floor, each surrounded by intricate runes. The symbols pulsed faintly, resonating with the energy of the Blood Moon above.

A hush fell over the assembly as the great doors behind her creaked open again, and Raphael emerged, flanked by servants. He was silent, his white hair unbound and flowing over his shoulders. When his eyes met hers, the connection between them sparked. No words were exchanged. None were needed.

High Priestess Lilith stepped forward, her voice echoing through the courtyard. "Come forth, children of Blackthorne."

Azrael and Raphael stepped into the blood-bathed center, walking barefoot across the stone, the runes glowing ever so slightly brighter as they neared.

Lilith met them midway. Her voice was smooth and seductive, filled with promises and shadows. “Tonight, you shed the blood of mortality and rise into divinity. If you survive, you will no longer be merely heirs—you will be gods among vampires. Eternal. Unbreakable. Like your father. Like the Firstborn rulers before you. The Blood Ascension will burn away your weaknesses. You shall be reborn.”

"Bring forth the offerings!" At Lilith’s command, the courtyard doors burst open, and twelve human girls were dragged in by vampire guards. Their cries and pleas for mercy echoed off the stone walls, a cacophony of desperation.

"Please, no! I have a family!" one girl screamed, her voice cracking with terror.

"Let me go! I don't want to die!" another sobbed, struggling against the iron grip of her captor.

“Please! No! Please, let us go!”

“God, someone help us!”

“Don’t kill me, I’ll do anything—please, I’ll serve, just don’t—”

“MONSTERS! You’re all monsters!”

One of them broke from the group and tried to run. A guard caught her by the hair, slammed her to the ground, and dragged her back, her cries piercing and desperate.

Lilith gestured to her acolytes and they stepped forward, one for each girl, standing behind them. Each held a dagger carved of metal and bone, etched with runes and stained dark with old blood.

Lilith turned to Azrael and Raphael. "Disrobe and lie within the sacred symbols."

Without hesitation, the twins shed their robes, revealing their pale forms, and lay down within the pentagrams, the cold stone sending shivers through their bodies. Despite the distance, their eyes remained locked, a tether of unity amidst the chaos.

Lilith directed the guards, "Position the sacrifices.”

Six girls were dragged toward Azrael’s circle, six toward Raphael’s. The humans fought and screamed as they were forced to kneel around the runes. Their sobs echoed off the courtyard walls.

"Please, I beg you," one girl whimpered, tears streaming down her face. "I don't want to die."

"Why are you doing this? We're innocent!" another cried out, her voice filled with desperation.

Lilith's voice rose, commanding and unwavering. "The Blood Ascension demands the sacrifice of purity. Twelve virgins, offered to the Lord of Darkness and Chaos, Lucifer, to grant you power."

The acolytes raised their daggers.

Azrael stared up at the blood moon, unblinking.

One of the girls looked directly into her eyes and sobbed, “Please let me go... I’m not ready to die…”

Azrael said nothing.

Lilith’s voice rang out like a bell tolling death. “Begin.”

With a synchronized motion, the acolytes slit the throats of the girls. Some of the girls gurgled as they tried to scream, others choked on their blood, their bodies writhing and convulsing.

The acolytes caught the dying bodies and held them firmly above the circles until the last of their blood drained, their faces expressionless. The blood seeped into the runes, glowing red-hot as the pentagrams came alive. The girls’ heads were severed with clean strokes and placed at each point of the pentagram—twelve silent witnesses, their glassy eyes staring up into the moonlit sky.

Lilith instructed, "Gaze upon the Blood Moon. Do not avert your eyes."

Azrael and Raphael fixed their stares upon the crimson orb above, its light intensifying, casting an otherworldly glow upon the scene.

The acolytes formed a circle around each pentagram, their chants beginning in a low murmur, building in intensity.

Lilith stood between the two circles, arms raised, her voice invoking the dark powers. "Oh Lucifer, Lord of Darkness, Harbinger of Chaos, Angel of Death, King of the Abyss, we summon you."

The acolytes responded in unison, "Al'halla Tartara Lucifera Asatra–El."

Suddenly, the wind ceased, and an unnatural silence enveloped the courtyard as if time itself had paused to bear witness.

The blood in the runes pulsed like a living thing.

Lilith's voice dropped to a whisper, yet it carried with undeniable power. "Let the Blood Ascension begin.”
