Chapter 20 DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN
/Nelson/
The morning started horrible as it is, but I had one mission which was to finish my damn paperwork fast enough to steal a few quiet hours with Edlyn, and make sure she doesn’t mistake the whole Jackie thing.
The girl had been in my head since the moment I met her. Every second I wasn’t near her, my wolf clawed at my insides like a caged beast.
Maybe it was the fact that she's special, maybe it was something else.
Either way, I didn’t care. I just wanted to see her.
I sat behind the large oak desk in my office, half of the table buried under stacks of reports and patrol logs, Felix, stood by the door, flipping through another file, while, Timi, paced with his usual restless energy.
We’d been discussing the recent wave of attacks brutal, coordinated, and strange as hell.
“Another pack was hit last night,” Felix said, tossing the report onto my desk. “The Blackmoon Pack. Thirty wolves dead before sunrise.”
Timi cursed under his breath. “That’s the third one this month. The witches are getting bolder, Nelson. And more organized.”
I rubbed my temple. “It doesn’t make sense. They’ve never targeted so many in such a short time frame. Not without reason.”
Felix leaned forward, arms crossed. “You think it’s about the relic again?”
“Could be,” I replied. “The witches have always wanted control over it. If they’re targeting packs near the border, it’s to weaken the alliance before they make their move.”
Timi slammed a fist against the wall, eyes glowing faint gold. “We should strike first. Hunt them down.”
“And risk a full-scale war?” I shot back, my tone sharp. “We need strategy, not rage.”
There was a tense silence.
Only the faint hum of the air in the office and the sound of Felix flipping a page broke it.
Then Felix said quietly, “We’ll need to strengthen the borders. Increase patrols, maybe reach out to the Bloodfang Pack for support.”
I nodded. “Do it. And make sure no witch gets within ten miles of this territory.”
I could feel my wolf stirring restlessly beneath the surface impatient, distracted. Not by the witches, but by her.
Edlyn.
Every time her name crossed my mind, I just wanted to clear things up as soon as possible, i don't really want her to have the wrong ideas about me, and even worst hate me.
I was just about to dismiss the meeting when Jasmine’s crashed through the pack link like a thunderclap.
Her voice hit all three of us at once, frantic and terrified.
Jasmine: NELSON! EDLYN IS GONE!
The papers scattered from my desk as I shot up from my chair, my eyes flashing gold.
Nelson: What do you mean gone?
Jasmine: I—I don’t know! We were shopping, she went to change and then suddenly she was just… gone! I can’t sense her, Nelson~~ her scent, her aura... nothing!
The room went deadly silent.
Felix’s expression hardened instantly. “Alpha—”
“I know,” I growled, already heading for the door. “Get the trackers ready. She couldn’t have gotten far.”
Jasmine: I’m sorry, I swear I was right in front of her, yet she ran so fast then she suddenly disappeared.
Nelson: It’s not your fault. Stay where you are. I’ll find her.
The connection snapped, but the urgency remained like fire in my veins.
Timi was already moving, grabbing weapons and a comm. “You think the witches took her?”
Felix shook his head grimly. “If they did, there’d be chaos at the border already. No one crosses this territory without our notice.”
“Then what the hell happened?” I muttered, my pulse racing.
Neither of them had an answer.
All I knew was that my wolf was howling inside me, restless and enraged.
That kind of panic only came from one thing a mate in danger. But she's not my mate and i've not even felt any bond yet.
And if anyone witch, vampire, or goddess herself had taken Edlyn from me…
They’d learn exactly what happens when Supreme Alpha loses control.
Hours.
That’s how long I’d been running through the damn forest.
The moon had climbed high, bathing everything in silver light, and still no trace of her.
Only faint hints of her scent, fading in and out like ghosts on the wind.
My wolf, Sunny, was going insane inside my head.
She’s out here. She’s close. Why can’t you smell her properly?
His growl was constant, pacing back and forth in my mind like a caged storm.
“I’m trying!” I snapped out loud, my boots crunching against the forest floor.
My voice echoed off the trees, harsh and broken.
Felix and a handful of scouts trailed behind me, moving silently, their expressions tight.
But I couldn’t slow down.
Couldn’t breathe.
Every branch I brushed past felt like a delay.
Every minute without her scent felt like a knife twisting deeper.
I made a big mistake sending her shopping at the joint market... if i had sent her to the market within my pack border, i would have been notified if any stranger enters the pack.
“Alpha,” Felix called softly from behind, “we’ve covered most of the south side. There’s nothing. No blood, no struggle. It’s like she vanished.”
“That’s not possible,” I growled. “No one vanishes in my territory.” well not my territory per say... the market was at the joint border, but it still can be considered mine since am the Supreme.
Sunny snarled in agreement.
Keep moving. She’s out there. I can feel her heartbeat.
After seaching for hours i decided to head back to the pack house or maybe wait for her at the pack gate... maybe she's waiting back home already.
On getting to the pack gate I clenched my fists. “Set up a wider perimeter. Double the patrol line from the east ridge to the river. I don’t care if it takes all night, I want every warrior—”
And then I froze.
A scent hit me.
Faint. But unmistakable.
Wild. Electric.
Her.
Every muscle in my body went rigid.
Sunny roared inside my chest.
She's here!
I didn’t even think. One second, I was standing there giving orders. The next, I was walking towards her.
The world blurred around me trees, wind, moonlight all a streak of motion as my wolf took over, guiding my steps. Branches tore at my clothes, but I didn’t care. And then I saw her standing at the edge of the clearing, her silver hair glowing faintly under the moonlight, her clothes dusty, her face looked strangely alive and whole.
My heart stopped.
“Edlyn…”
Before she could got to me, I was already there.
I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into me hard.
She gasped as I crushed her against my chest, my body trembling with the force of the relief that hit me like a tidal wave.
Sunny howled inside me, voice thick with raw emotion.
She’s here. She’s safe.
I buried my face in her neck, inhaling her scent like air after drowning.
Moonlight. Rain. And something faintly metallic blood.
But she was alive.
“Don’t—” My voice cracked. I swallowed hard. “Don’t you ever do that again.”
She froze in my arms, probably startled by the way I held her, by the growl vibrating in my chest.
But I couldn’t let go.
