Traitor Among Us
Amani burst from the tent, collapsing to her hands and knees on the grass as she retched violently. The sight of Terrence’s lifeless body hanging from the chains was a blow to her gut.
Malakai rushed to her side, his hand gently resting on her back, his touch a calming presence amidst her turmoil. “Amani…?”
She raised her hand, a silent plea for a moment to compose herself. She took a shuddering breath, forcing the bile back down as she tried to regain control. She had never wished death on anyone—except perhaps, the King. But now, as the bile of despair rose in her throat, the notion of killing him felt hollow. It wouldn’t erase the pain in her heart, and it certainly wouldn’t restore what she had lost. She wanted justice, not vengeance; to see the King held accountable for his heinous crimes and to stop the cycle of suffering inflicted by his corruption.
“Are you alright, Amani?” Malakai asked gently.
“No… I’m not alright,” she replied, turning to face him with a mix of frustration and despair.
Malakai’s eyes were filled with deep concern. “Maybe you should sit down and take a breather…”
“I don’t need to take a breather!” Amani snapped. “I can’t sleep… I can’t eat… goddess, I can barely breathe! Every day feels like I’m suffocating because I don’t know if my pack is safe in their own homes, on their own land! Terrence was my only witness to your father’s villainy, Kai! What am I supposed to do now? How do I prove anything? You don’t even believe me!”
“Okay, okay… calm down…” Malakai said urgently as he pulled her into his arms. “Please, have some faith in me. The first thing I’m going to do when I return to the palace is confront my father about those claims.”
Amani took several deep breaths, trying to steady her turbulent emotions. “Come with me,” she said, taking Malakai’s hand in hers.
She led him to one of the medical tents, where hundreds of injured men were being cared for by her medical team. When Maggie spotted Malakai, her face lit up with joy, and she rushed over to give him a warm hug.
“How are they, Mags?” Amani asked, glancing at the injured men being treated.
“Oh, they’ll live,” Maggie replied with a reassuring smile. “I promise you that.”
“These are my father’s guards,” Malakai noted, surveying the scene.
“Yes,” Amani confirmed. “These are the guards we battled at the western border. In a few days, they should be strong enough to shift and reunite with their families.”
She turned to Malakai, her eyes intense. “If your father isn’t held accountable, I will continue this war, and countless lives will be lost. I don’t want that, Kai. No more death. I’ve seen and endured enough to haunt me for a lifetime. Put your father on trial, and step into the role you’ve been preparing for your entire life. Be the Alpha King this world needs.”
Malakai traced his fingertips gently over Amani’s face where her scars used to be, a gesture as familiar to him as his own heartbeat.
“I promise you,” he said softly, “I will make this right, and there will be no war.”
She exhaled deeply, leaning into the softness of his kiss, savoring the tender warmth of his lips. “I know you will… my Prince,” she whispered, her trust evident in her voice.
As Malakai headed back to the palace with Terrence’s body, Amani felt a pang of sorrow. She knew Terrence’s mate had sensed his death and deserved to give him a proper burial. His mate also deserved to know the truth behind his demise. Amani found some comfort in knowing that this chapter would soon close and she could help make the world a better place for rogues and packs alike.
“Amani?” Archer’s voice pierced the silence, jolting her from her thoughts.
He approached with a small, sealed note bearing the royal insignia. “A messenger bird just delivered this. It’s from the palace.”
Amani accepted the note, her curiosity piqued. Malakai had just departed, so it couldn’t be from him. As she broke the seal and began to read, Archer observed her shifting expressions—surprise giving way to pain, then evolving into a fierce, unmistakable anger.
“Rally the army by the fountain in five minutes. We need an urgent meeting,” she ordered, her voice cold and commanding.
“Yes, Alpha,” Archer replied, sensing the gravity of her tone.
Amani crushed the note in her fist, her gaze darkening with a storm of fury that would deter anyone who dared to meet her eyes.
When her army had gathered and stood in formation, she paced the lines, meeting each gaze with a penetrating stare.
“There is a traitor among us!” Amani’s voice thundered, cutting through the murmurs. “I’ve just received a message from the Queen, revealing very private details about me. She claims that one of our own has confided in her, and somehow, she believes this means I can trust her!”
She halted, her gaze sweeping over each face in search of any sign—nervous glances, beads of sweat, a tremor in the hands—that might betray the guilty party.
“Who was it?!” She demanded, her eyes locking onto Maggie and her Betas, unwilling to believe they could ever betray her.
Time seemed to stretch as silence prevailed, not a single soul stepping forward. Amani closed her eyes, centering her mind and tapping into her Alpha senses. There it was—one heartbeat stood apart from the rest, accelerating in rhythm and volume. She followed it with pinpoint accuracy until she was so close she could almost reach out and touch it. When she opened her eyes, her heart shattered at the sight before her.
“Daniela…” Amani’s voice trembled with shock and betrayal.
“Daniela?” Steven’s voice was a mixture of disbelief and shock. “You didn’t…”
“No… wait,” Daniela pleaded, her voice trembling with desperation.
“Daniela, how could you?!” Amani’s voice was sharp.
“It’s not what it looks like!” Daniela’s eyes were wide with panic.
“Then what is it?!” Amani shot back, her frustration boiling over. “Because it looks like you’ve betrayed me!”
“No… I would never betray you, Amani!” Daniela’s voice broke with emotion, tears streaming down her face. “You’re my family… I love you!”
“Betas!” Amani’s command cut through the air, her tone a mix of fiery anger and deep pain.
Darius and Archer rushed to her side. “Yes, Alpha!”
“Arrest her!” Amani’s voice was steely with moral obligation. “Take her to the holding tent immediately!”
The Betas restrained Daniela, dragging her toward the holding tent.
“Amani, please! You have to let me explain!” Daniela’s voice was a raw plea, but Amani was consumed by a storm of hurt, unwilling to hear her out—at least not then.
Amani’s glare was icy as she waved off the rest of her army. “You’re all dismissed!”
“Amani!” Steven’s voice cut through the chaos, pleading. “Please, give her a chance to—”
“I’ll be in my tent,” Amani interrupted, her voice cold and final. “Tell my Betas not to disturb me unless the world is ending.”
Without a glance back, Amani stormed away, her shoulders stiff, each step echoing her profound anguish. To Steven, it was as if Amani was a dam on the verge of breaking, her Alpha strength crumbling under the weight of betrayal. The look in her eyes was one of utter devastation, a fierce testament to the deep wounds inflicted by the betrayal of someone she had trusted completely.
