The Dawn of Reckoning

Rush proved to be a man of his word. As nightfall descended, he returned to Bloodmoon with his formidable army of rogues. Amani and her Betas were left speechless, clearly seeing that Rush had not exaggerated his influence in the Rogue Lands. It was evident he had rallied every capable Lycan from the entire territory. Hundreds of thousands of rogues arrived with Rush, ready to stand against the Alpha King.

“Did I deliver or did I deliver?” Rush asked, his smirk broadening as he raised his hands in a questioning gesture.

Amani exhaled in astonishment. “I must admit, I am quite impressed. Everyone is aware of the terms required to fight with Bloodmoon?”

In response, Rush did not speak. Instead, he knelt on one knee and placed his fist over his heart. A moment later, Kaleb followed suit, kneeling with equal respect. Then, like a ripple across a vast sea, the entire army of rogues dropped to their knees in unison, declaring Amani as their Alpha. Amani never imagined she would see the day when an army of such magnitude would place their trust in her to lead them into battle. Her heart swelled with the thought that perhaps her parents were watching over her. If they were, she knew they would be proud.

The next morning, Amani linked with the newly allied rogues, and the entire army trained as a unified force. To the spectators, the scene was nothing short of magnificent. The flawless synchronization of their movements sent chills through the onlookers. It was evident that any foe daring to challenge such a disciplined and powerful force would be courting their own demise. The army trained for hours, mastering diverse battle tactics designed to confound their opponents.

Once Amani felt confident in their preparedness, she assembled everyone in the courtyard to outline her plans for the next phase.

“My mate is growing increasingly anxious due to my silence,” Amani said, pacing the platform as she briefed her army. “It’s only a matter of time before he comes rushing back here, and we cannot afford any interference. He’s attempted to move their meeting to today, but fortunately for us, several Alphas won’t be arriving until late this evening. According to the latest letter from Malakai, the meeting will take place first thing tomorrow morning… and that’s when we invade Blackclaw. By now, the King most likely believes I’m teetering on the edge of death… he’ll never see us coming.”

“The biggest challenge will be breaching their gates,” Kaleb pointed out.

“The gates on their western border remain open for trade and shipping,” Amani replied. “That’s the same route I used to exit their borders when I attempted to leave the Pack Lands. It’s the ideal entry point for our invasion. Once we secure the western border of Blackclaw, we’ll advance directly towards the palace.”

“What if other packs ambush us from the other borders?” Rush asked.

“All of their Alphas will be in Blackclaw,” Amani responded firmly. “Their Betas will not risk leading their packs into war without them. They are completely vulnerable at this moment.”

“Sounds like you’ve thought of everything,” Rush praised. “We were right to place our trust in you… Alpha.”

“We’ve assembled an extraordinary army,” Amani began, her voice steady but somber. “But I won’t stand here and pretend that this will all end happily. Some of us will not be coming home. It’s a harsh reality we must all face.”

“If we die, we die as legends!” A rogue shouted, and the crowd erupted in a thunderous roar of agreement.

Amani surveyed the crowd as they cheered and rallied each other. An unsettling weight settled in her stomach, knowing that many of these brave men and women would fall in battle. She wished for no harm to come to any of them, but the brutal truth of war is that not everyone gets out alive.

“Make sure you eat and rest well tonight,” she concluded. “Tomorrow is a pivotal day for all of us.”

In their honor, a grand feast was prepared by those who would remain behind—elders, pregnant women, the physically impaired, and children. While no one was compelled to fight, the eagerness to contribute was unmistakable. Some, like Lily and Leanna, were specifically ordered to stay within Bloodmoon’s borders. Despite their pleas to serve as medical aids, Amani, with the support of their mates, insisted they stay behind for their safety and the security of the pack.

———

Later that evening, Amani sat in her study, trying to gather her thoughts while mentally bracing herself for the challenges the following day would bring. The door creaked open, and Archer stepped in with Lily and Maggie in tow. Maggie carried a plate of food for Amani, knowing she had skipped the courtyard feast.

“You need to eat, Amani,” Maggie insisted, setting the plate down on Amani’s desk.

Amani took one whiff of the food and immediately clamped a hand over her mouth, struggling to suppress the urge to vomit.

“Are you alright?” Maggie asked, her voice laced with concern.

Amani swallowed hard, taking deep breaths to steady her churning stomach.

“Yes, it’s just nerves,” she replied, pushing the plate away.

“You wanted to see us, Amani?” Archer asked.

“Yes, I needed to speak with you and Mags,” Amani replied.

“I’ll wait downstairs,” Lily offered, heading for the door.

“No, Lily,” Amani called after her. “Please stay. You two are mates, and I want you to hear what I have to say as well.”

“Alright,” Lily agreed, returning to stand beside Archer.

“Maggie,” Amani began, “I’m at a loss for what more to say. You are stubborn and refuse to stay here in Bloodmoon. I’m making one final attempt to convince you to remain where it is safe.”

Maggie shook her head firmly. “I have too much experience as a medic to just sit around here and worry about you all. I’m useful, and you know it. Besides, the medic unit is already counting on me.”

Amani sighed, her frustration evident. “Archer, I’m about to invade your home pack. It wouldn’t be fair to expect you to fight against your people for my cause. I want to offer you the chance to stay here in Bloodmoon.”

“No,” Archer replied resolutely. “Bloodmoon is my home now. You’re my people, and this is where I belong—with her.” He pulled Lily into his embrace, tenderly brushing the hair from her face and gently caressing her cheek. “When the King targets one of us, he targets us all. He wanted us all dead, Amani… that includes me, Lily, and our…”

Archer’s hand rested on Lily’s belly, their eyes locking with a profound, unspoken understanding. Amani’s eyes widened in shock as tears welled up.

She sprang from her chair and enveloped them both in a tight, heartfelt hug. “I’m so happy for you.”

Maggie chuckled as Archer and Lily’s faces lit up with joy at Amani’s reaction.

“I’m going to battle, Amani. I’m fighting for the future of our pack… for the future of my child,” Archer affirmed.

“Please don’t tell my father, Amani,” Lily implored. “I don’t want him stressing about this… not now.”

“Tell me what?” Darius’s voice cut through, making Archer and Lily jump at his sudden entrance.

Darius’s gaze locked onto Amani, who was still tearful and smiling from cheek to cheek.

“Lily and Archer are expecting!” Amani blurted out.

Lily threw her arms up in frustration. “Amani!”

Darius’s eyes shifted to Archer. “Is that so?”

Archer swallowed hard as Darius approached him with an unreadable expression. Was he angry? Was he about to attack? Amani and Maggie exchanged anxious glances, their thoughts mirroring Archer’s. To their surprise, Darius’s stern expression softened into a smile as he gave Archer a playful swat on the shoulder.

“You’re a good man, Archer,” Darius commended. “I couldn’t have asked for a better mate for my Lily.”

Archer’s face lit up with honor. “Thank you, sir.”

Darius then turned to Lily, and they embraced in a warm, congratulatory hug.

“Oh, great. Everyone knows now,” Leanna remarked as she and Andrew entered the room.

Darius shot Leanna a look of disbelief. “You knew?”

“Everyone did,” Andrew chimed in, “except you and big-mouth Amani.”

“I do not have a big mouth!” Amani defended herself.

“Amani, you literally just revealed our news to my father moments ago,” Lily pointed out.

Amani grinned playfully. “Well, I guess I do have a bit of a big mouth.”

“Alright, enough excitement for one night,” Darius interjected. “We all need to rest. Amani, please make sure you get some sleep.”

“Amani, let me join you tomorrow,” Andrew pleaded.

“That’s not going to happen.” Darius countered firmly.

Amani approached Andrew and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “I agree with your father, Andrew. I need you here because your role is crucial.”

“It is?” Andrew asked, his curiosity piqued.

“Yes,” Amani affirmed. “Your responsibility is to safeguard our territory and everyone within it. I’m entrusting you with the task of protecting our most vulnerable. While I lead our strongest fighters into battle, you will stay behind to ensure the safety of those who need it most. I could have appointed any other guard for this role, but I am placing my trust in you. When we return from war, you will take your rightful place as my second in command.”

Andrew’s demeanor shifted, his resolve evident as he stood taller, his sense of purpose ignited by Amani’s words.

“I won’t let you down, Alpha,” he vowed earnestly.

Amani’s smile was sincere and approving. “I know you won’t.”
