Chapter 49
I stepped further into the room and my breath caught in my throat. The sight was surreal, almost cinematic even.
There were rows of guns, bullets neatly stacked, bows and arrows, and knives of various sizes displayed carefully like a work of art. The room felt cold, sterile, like something out of a spy movie.
A large wooden desk sat against the far wall, cluttered with papers. My heart was beating so loudly as I approached, dread instantly filling my stomach as I shuffled through the papers, my fingers trembling slightly.
The documents were all about Aiden, surveillance photos, reports, and detailed descriptions of his movements. My eyes widened as I realized the extent of information Logan had gathered. What was all this for?
I flipped through more pages, my gaze landed on a few books scattered across the desk. The titles made me narrow my eyes, "Werewolves: The Untold History," "Lycanthropy and Modern Science," and "The Hunter's Guide." My stomach churned with unease. How long had Logan been keeping this secret? Had he known about Aiden's true nature all along?
Oh God, Oh God.
I reached for another book, but my phone rang, startling me. I quickly pulled it from my pocket and silenced it, but the moment of panic had broken my focus. I glanced back at the door, suddenly feeling exposed. What if Logan caught me here?
Without another thought, I bolted out of the office, closing the door behind me. My hands shook as I returned the decoration back to the way it was. I rushed down the hallway and into the room, shutting the door and leaning against it, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
I tried to process what I'd seen, but my thoughts were jumbled. Logan had been tracking Aiden, but why? And the books on werewolves... Did he know? If so, why hadn't he told me? The realization was like a punch to the gut, had Logan been lying to me this whole time?
I sank onto the edge of my bed, running a hand through my hair. The man I thought I knew, the man I loved, had he been hiding this part of his life from me? And if he could hide something this big, what else was he hiding?
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. I tried to remember every conversation, every moment with Logan, searching for signs I might have missed. But everything seemed so normal, so... perfect.
I picked up my phone when it rang again and stared at the screen. It was a message from Keisha, asking if everything was okay. I typed back a quick response, my fingers trembling: "Yeah, just wanted to hear your voice,"
I set the phone down, my mind so scrambled that I couldn't think straight. l Could I confront Logan about this? How would he react? No, if I did then he would know I snooped.
He always said Aiden was dangerous but now I am aware he was too, in a different way. He had been calculating, secretive? Was he protecting me, or was there another reason?
I buried my face in my hands, feeling tears prick at the corners of my eyes. I felt trapped, suffocated by the weight of what I'd discovered. The room seemed to close in on me, the air thick with so many questions.
Who was Logan, really? The question gnawed at me, leaving me restless and afraid. I needed answers, but the fear of what those answers might be kept me frozen in place. My world had been turned upside down in a matter of moments, and I didn't know how to right it again.
All I knew was that I couldn't trust Logan anymore. The man I'd thought I knew was a stranger, hiding behind a mask. And now, that mask had been shattered, leaving me staring into the unknown, questioning everything I thought was real.
I managed to gather my thoughts and wash my face to hide the fact that I have been crying.
Later Logan walked into the house with his face lit up with a broad smile. I watched him, feeling a knot of unease tighten in my stomach. He looked happier than I'd seen him in a while, but after what I'd discovered earlier, I couldn't bring myself to share in his joy.
"Hey, love," Logan greeted me, pulling me into a hug. I forced a smile, and tried not to stiffen, "You won't believe me if I told you what happened," he continued, I noticed his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Really? What happened?" I asked I wanted to ask about Aiden, but I knew that doing so would raise suspicions. Instead, I focused on his good mood, hoping to find some clues.
Logan headed to the kitchen, and I followed, watching as he began preparing dinner. "I closed a huge deal today," he said, his voice brimming with pride. "It's going to change our lives forever. We can finally start thinking about all those things we've been dreaming about."
"That's amazing," I said, though my mind was elsewhere. I couldn't shake the image of the papers and weapons in his office, the books about werewolves. It felt like there was a ticking time bomb between us, ready to explode.
I kept quiet and watched him, a thousand things in my mind yet, I had no courage to voice them out.
When he was done and I helped set the table, we sat down to eat when he looked at me with his expression suddenly more serious. "Have you heard from Aiden lately?" he asked, catching me off guard.
I hesitated, my heart skipping a beat. "No, I haven't seen him since... well, you know," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
Logan frowned slightly, his fork paused mid-air. "It's strange, don't you think? He was always around, always following you, and now... nothing. It's almost like he disappeared off the face of the earth."
I swallowed hard, my appetite evaporating. "Maybe he finally got the message that I don't want anything to do with him," I suggested, hoping to steer the conversation away from Aiden.
Logan nodded, but his eyes were sharp, probing. "It's just so unlike him. You sure you haven't seen him? Heard any news about him?"
His questions felt like traps, each one tightening the noose around my neck. Suddenly, everything clicked into place, his insistent questions and surveillance, the weapons. He had a plan, and Aiden was at the center of it.
"I don't want to talk about Aiden," I said, my voice firmer than I intended. I needed to end this conversation before I revealed too much.
Logan's jaw tightened, and I saw a flash of anger in his eyes, quickly masked by a forced smile. In that instant, it reminded me of Marcus, "Of course," he said, his tone too light, too controlled. "I just worry about you, that's all. I want to make sure you're safe."
I nodded, unable to meet his gaze.
After dinner, I pushed my chair back and stood up, forcing a yawn. "I'm really tired," I said, giving Logan a small smile. "I think I'll head to bed early tonight."
Logan looked at me, his eyes softening with concern. "Alright, love. Get some rest," he said, rising to follow me to the bedroom. As we climbed into bed, he pulled me close, his arm draped over my waist. He kissed my forehead gently, whispering, "Sweet dreams."
I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the chill that ran down my spine. Lying there, enveloped in Logan's arms, I felt a sense of dread I couldn't shake. The man holding me, the man I'd shared my life with, now seemed like a stranger. The day's revelations kept replaying in my mind, and I couldn't reconcile the Logan I thought I knew with the secrets he'd been keeping.
Eventually, exhaustion overcame my racing thoughts, and I drifted into an uneasy sleep.
Logan, meanwhile, lay awake, his mind churning. He sensed the distance between us, the way I'd been acting all evening. He couldn't pinpoint what was wrong, but he knew something had changed. Determined to get to the bottom of it, he resolved to talk to me in the morning, to figure out what was troubling me.
Just as he was about to close his eyes, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. He picked it up, frowning at the message from an unknown number: "Meet me at the usual place." He glanced over at me, making sure I was asleep before carefully slipping out of bed. He moved with practiced silence, changing into black clothing and grabbing his keys.
He left the house quietly, driving through the dimly lit streets until he reached the front of Aiden's office building. Logan parked his car, his eyes scanning the area. It was quiet, deserted at this hour. He checked his phone again, confirming the meeting place.
A soft knock on his window startled him. He turned to see a figure standing outside. Logan unlocked the door, and Marcus slipped into the passenger seat.
