Chapter 18 Good Dog

Chapter 18 Good Dog
The Fifth Element 🔥 🌊 ⛰️ 🌪️ 🌀

~Cassie’s POV~

“Cassie, I’m only trying to help you. We both have the same goal here. To find out what you’re truly capable of,” the teacher said to me.

“Yeah, I know. I’m sorry. It’s just that nothing magical has happened yet since we’ve been at this. And it’s all beginning to seem like a waste of time,” I said to him.

“It’s not a waste of time. So I’m begging you to let go of anything that’s bothering you right now and focus on your powers,” he said to me.

“Fine,” I said to him.

Mr. Ken went over to the door and opened it, and someone brought in a dog.

He took the leash of the dog and came closer to me. Golden retriever. Big, fluffy, tongue lolling, eyes too smart.

“Now let’s experiment,” he said to me, and I raised my eyebrows.

“With the dog?” I asked him.

“Yep. Meet Ronnie,” he said while looking at the dog.

“Oh. Hi, Ronnie,” I said to the dog, and he barked at me, startling me in the process. Loud. Sharp. Echoed off the walls.

“Great, she hates me,” I declared.

“Just give her some time. She’ll eventually like you,” the teacher said to me.

“Now. I want you to ask Ronnie to sit. Use your mind,” he said to me.

“Okay. I’ll try,” I said and focused on the dog.

I repeated the word sit in my mind countless times, but it didn’t work. Ronnie just tilted his head, panting. Judging me.

“It’s not working,” I said to the teacher.

“Just try harder. I want you to mean what you’re thinking,” he told me.

I let out a heavy breath and focused back on the dog. I pictured him sitting nicely in my mind —tail down, ears relaxed, looking at me like I wasn’t an idiot — and suddenly the dog sat down, huffing and puffing.

I gasped with excitement. “I did it!” I said happily.

“Yes, yes you did,” the teacher said to me.

“Let me try something,” I said and focused on the dog again.

I pictured him running to get a stick that was lying across the classroom and bringing it here. And suddenly he did exactly what I imagined. Paws thumping on tile, stick clenched in his teeth, dropping it at my feet with a wet thunk.

“Oh my god, I did that!” I say excitedly, and the teacher patted my shoulder.

“Very good job, Cassie. I’m impressed,” he said to me.

“Thank you,” I said to him, grinning now. Actually grinning. Cheeks hurt.

“Okay. I think we should call it a day. We’ll meet back here tomorrow for another lesson. Okay?” he said to me. And I nodded.

“Remember… you can’t tell anyone about what your powers are yet. Okay?” he reminded me.

“Yeah, yeah. I know. Till we’re sure,” I said and smiled at him.

“Well then… You may go now, Cassie. I’ll see you tomorrow,” Mr. Ken said to me and took the dog with him and went out of the classroom.

I also made my way to the school library.

I wanted to know more about the history of this place.

☯️☯️

I got lost for some time before I finally found the library.

Not without the help of people I saw along the way though… they all seemed glad to talk to me. Too glad. Smiling like they knew something I didn’t.

I finally got to a huge door that had the word ‘Library’ boldly carved on the top of it, and I pushed it open. It groaned.

I saw an old woman with grey hair at the reception, hunched over a ledger. She didn’t look up. She just nodded at me once.

I gave her a small smile in return before moving forward.

I carefully inspected the books that were neatly arranged on the shelves. Dusty spines, gold lettering. I wasn’t seeing what I wanted.

I only saw books about how to master elements, and separate books for each element there is.

Water. Fire. Air. Earth.

All Except mine.

~
I peeked through the opening between the books on the shelf to the other side and saw someone else there. A boy.

I brought my eyes closer to the opening to take a closer look at who it was.

Oh. It was the dark-haired water boy Jake was fighting with on my first day here. Damon, I think. Same scowl. Same black under his uniform sleeves.

He almost caught my eyes peeking through the opening and I quickly moved away from the spot, heart hammering, hoping he didn’t see me.

I waited for some minutes before checking back through the opening to see if he was still there.

He wasn’t.

I sighed softly and turned to leave where I was standing but was caught by surprise, which made me flinch back a bit.

Damon was standing right in front of me. Silent. Too close. How did he move that fast?

“Leaving already?” he said to me. His mischievous voice low. No smile.

I was too stunned to speak. Mouth dry. As I stared at him in shock.
