Danger Around Me
Pearl’s P.O.V.
“You forgot that I am also your security head.” She replied to me in a sassy tone, making me roll my eyes annoyingly. She was right, though. She was not only my personal assistant but also my security head. She was the one who handled all my work in my absence. She was more like a friend than one with a professional relationship.
“Even if I want to, I am sure you won’t let me forget this,” I remarked in a teasing tone, a smile creeping on my lips.
“Yup… and that’s why, I know what happened to you there.” She answered in the same tone, but I could sense her worry in her voice.
“I succeeded in surviving this time, but I don’t want to take any risks further, Evelyn.” I replied to her in a serious tone. I was glad that I was vigilant enough to sense something off this time early and saved myself.
But luck doesn't always favour you.
“Talk to the king, and let him allow you to have your own team of guards, Pearl. This is the best for you there. The palace is filled with dangers lurking around in the shadows, and as his wife, you are the prime target now. He is already a century old but didn't find his mate yet. This will be a coincidence or a deliberate delay; you can't say anything about this, but now he has you—not his mate, but someone who can affect him. This mere fact put you in grave danger, Pearl, and this is making me hell worried about you."
I understood her concern and what she was implying by hinting at this. To be honest, after what Levi did, I also didn’t have any trust in the rest of the staff here. Killian was there king, and the information that Evelyn sent me two days ago had everything that Killian faced all these years after his birth.
“I don’t think that it will be wise, Evelyn. As you said, the palace is full with schemes and dangers. Bringing my team here will put their lives in danger too. I can’t take that risk.” I said to her in a serious tone, my eyes still on the horizon.
The sky was clear with a few small white clouds, but there was a storm going inside my mind.
“We need King’s permission to enter the royal pack, Pearl.” She pointed out and I took a deep breath.
This is the biggest difference between a human city or country and a werewolf pack. Your presence will be sensed by the higher authority of the pack as soon as you put your foot on their land when it’s easy to enter a human city or country without being noticed.
“Let me see what I can do in this matter, Evelyn, but I want you to investigate all those people who know about my immunity towards poison. Try to find out if any of them contacted with anyone in the royal pack.” I instructed her in the same serious tone.
“I am already working on it. I also need to inform you about Emma.” She replied to me, and I knitted my brows in confusion.
“What about her? What else does she want from me?” I asked her in a confused tone, and I didn’t mask my bitterness towards Emma.
Once upon a time she was my best friend but now….
She was my biggest nemesis.
“I got the information that she asked your brother to transfer your company to her as she is now the rightful heiress in place of you.” She told me and I scoffed bitterly. I don’t know how she was a princess when all she wants is to covet what others have.
“I am sure that Ryder would have disappointed her.” I sneered in disdain. Although Emma was my best friend, but I never shared my professional details with her. So knows that I am the owner of the chain of studios for my designing company, a lab for perfumes, and a small company which deals in data analysis.
But she didn’t know that I started all these companies on my own. I did get a start-up amount from Ryder and my parents, but I returned the amount with interest within two years.
“I think you will get a phone call from your brother very soon.” She informed me and I sighed aloud this time. “Arrange another phone with all security features and a new sim card for him.” I instructed her in a serious tone.
“Staying alert will be the best in this situation.” She murmured but I heard her clearly. “Yeah…. That’s what we need to do now.” I also murmured a reply.
There was a short pause in our conversation. My eyes were still glued at the same point while so many things were going on like a storm in my mind.
“The information that you asked me about the king, I sent you to your personal email.” She informed me after some time. “Okay… let me check that first.” I answered her absentmindedly.
“Stay vigilant there, Pearl. The world of lycans is more dangerous than any other world of species.” She warned me again in a worried tone.
“I know, Evelyn. I learned my lesson from this incident.” I answered her calmly and took a deep breath before hanging up.
I closed my eyes and leaned my head backward.
Evelyn was right. This world was more complicated than what I faced in the royal pack of werewolves. In the past three days I learned so much about Killian and his past from not only Evelyn but from Hugh and Lucifer.
I was happy to see that Killian had two the most loyal and true friends with him among the crowd of all scheming people who wanted nothing but him dead.
I was shocked to learn that his heart had been freezing bit by bit all these years after a specific event. I felt a pant of pain every time I thought about this.
For the past two days, he didn’t come to see me once. Hugh told me that he had been busy with dealing some business stuff, but I missed him too much.
I opened my eyes and stared the sky over my head blankly. I couldn’t mind-link Killian because I was still not a member of this pack, and also Maya was still in deep sleep. Without my wolf, mind-linking was difficult.
I straightened my neck when an idea popped into my mind. I remembered that I could mind-link Ryder from a very young age of 10. I still remembered Ryder’s face which turned pale when he realized that it was me who mind-linked him for the first time.
He made me promise him that I would not mind-link anyone else except him until I reached the age. I was angry and disappointed at that time, but later I realized that his instructions were for my own good.
Let’s not talk about past….
If I could mind-link Ryder at such young age, why can’t I mind-link Killian with whom I was also emotionally attached?
I smiled and decided to give this thought a try. I only wanted to hear his voice, even if it is for a few seconds. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, concentrating on Killian and his beast….
Velan….
