"Next in line, ma’am," a voice called, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I glanced up to see the check-in agent waiting patiently, her friendly smile an unsettling contrast to the weight in my chest.
Nodding, I rolled my suitcase forward, handing over my passport and ticket without a word.
Everything felt automatic.. like I was moving through the motions while my heart lagged somewhere back in Caleb’s office, replaying those final words between us.
"Head to Gate 14 after security,” the agent said, her smile unwavering as she handed back my documents. “Have a safe flight to New York."
"Thank you," I murmured, though my voice barely rose above a whisper.
I took a deep breath, feeling the press of finality settle over me as I picked up my bag and headed toward security.
The bustling airport around me buzzed with people moving with purpose, yet I felt like I was walking through quicksand, every step heavier than the last.
I found myself clutching my suitcase handle tighter, grounding myself as memories of my time here flooded my mind.. the stolen glances, the laughter-filled nights, and the quiet, unspoken moments with Caleb that seemed to linger in every corner of my mind.
As I moved through the security line, one memory surfaced above the rest: the goodbye with Nelly earlier that morning.
"I can’t believe you’re really leaving," she’d said, her eyes widening with shock when I told her I was leaving the company.
Her usually bright, bubbly demeanor seemed to dim, replaced with genuine sadness. "You’ve been such a force here, Samantha. The place won’t be the same without you."
"I didn’t think I’d leave so suddenly either," I admitted, managing a small smile despite the ache in my chest. "But sometimes, things just... change."
Nelly had pulled me into a hug, her arms tight and comforting.
"You’re doing what you have to. Just know you’ll be missed. And if you ever need anything...,”
“I’ll call you,” I’d promised, my voice barely holding steady. She’d looked at me as if she knew, deep down, that this wasn’t just about a job.
Now, seated at the gate and waiting for boarding to begin, I let my mind wander, letting the memories wash over me.
My gaze fell on the bustling crowds, but my mind was miles away, back to those fleeting moments with Caleb.. the look in his eyes, the warmth of his smile, the way he’d held me that night we ended up together after that dinner.
He was magnetic, drawing me in despite my best defenses, and leaving me helpless against everything I’d convinced myself was nothing more than a “fake” relationship.
But deep down, I knew it hadn’t been fake, not to me.
I pulled my hands into fists, willing myself to let go, to not think about the warmth I’d felt with Caleb that had lingered long after he was gone.
Yet, every time I pushed the thoughts away, they surged back with more force, filling me with a regret I wasn’t ready to admit.
But it didn’t matter now. It was too late to change anything.. I had made my decision, and Caleb had accepted it.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unfinished business, the ache that seemed to cling to me like a shadow.
And then there was the nagging thought of Monica.. the woman who’d pushed me to this breaking point.
I tried to imagine the relief she must feel, now that I was out of the picture, finally giving her a clear path to Caleb.
The thought twisted painfully inside me, as much as I wanted to deny it.
Despite everything, I’d wanted more with him.
I’d wanted to believe that he might somehow choose me, but I knew now that was just a foolish dream.
As I sat there, watching the clock tick down to boarding, I couldn’t help but let my mind wander back to Caleb one last time.
If he’d made a different choice, would I still be sitting here, alone in an airport, waiting for a plane to take me across the ocean?
Or would I be in his arms, laughing, planning a future that seemed so close, yet so impossible?
The gate agent’s voice crackled over the loudspeaker, announcing that it was time to board.
I stood up, feeling the finality in each step I took toward the plane, as if I was leaving pieces of myself scattered across the airport floor.
A strange mix of sadness and relief settled over me as I took my seat on the plane, stowing my bag beneath the seat and fastening my seatbelt.
The engines roared to life, and as the plane began to taxi down the runway, I let myself drift back, savoring those last fleeting moments, knowing that once we were airborne, there would be no going back.
The plane lifted off, and I felt the familiar tug as it climbed into the sky, the city lights below fading into the distance.
My chest tightened, a part of me wanting to turn back, to run back into Caleb’s office and demand he fight for me. But another part knew that was a fantasy.. that I’d only end up more broken than before.
The hours drifted by, blurring together as I sank deeper into my own thoughts.
And as New York’s skyline finally appeared below, I felt something strange, a sense of liberation mingling with the sadness. I’d closed one chapter of my life, as painful as it was, and maybe it was time to finally start another.
The wheels hit the tarmac, jolting me back to reality.
We’d landed, and with it, a new chapter waited for me.. a chapter that didn’t involve Caleb, his father, or the tangled mess I’d left behind in London.
But as I reached for my bag, a lingering question gnawed at the edges of my mind..
Would Caleb really let me go this easily? Or would he finally take the leap I’d once dreamed of and come after me?
The thought was a distant hope, one I tried to bury as I stood to exit
the plane, but as I stepped onto New York soil once more, I couldn’t shake it entirely.
And maybe, just maybe, I didn’t want to.
