Chapter 43

Samantha’s palms were slick with sweat, and she wiped them discreetly against her dress as Caleb guided her toward the towering oak doors of his father’s mansion.

The night air felt thick, her heart pounding louder than it should.

This was it.. her first appearance as Caleb’s girlfriend, the start of the charade they’d agreed to. She tugged nervously at the hem of her dress, her breath coming in shallow pulls as they neared the entrance.

"Ready?" Caleb’s voice was low, his hand brushing her elbow, drawing her out of her swirling thoughts. He didn’t seem nervous, but there was a hardness to his jaw, a sign he wasn’t as calm as he appeared.

"Ready as I’ll ever be," she muttered, offering a weak smile. The lights from the mansion spilled across the driveway, and Samantha couldn’t shake the feeling that once she stepped inside, there was no turning back.

The door swung open, and they were immediately greeted by a butler who ushered them into the grand foyer. Marble floors gleamed under the chandelier, and the place reeked of old money and power. Samantha felt small in comparison, like an outsider in a world she didn’t belong to.

"Mr. Caleb, your father is waiting in the dining room," the butler said, his tone formal, eyes lingering on Samantha for a brief moment before he turned on his heel and led the way.

Caleb gave her a reassuring nod, though his face remained stoic. She straightened her back, taking a deep breath, determined not to let her nerves show. They had practiced this, rehearsed every detail. She just had to play her part.

They walked through the halls, their footsteps echoing in the silence, before they finally reached the dining room. As they entered, the tension hit her like a wall. Caleb’s father sat at the head of the table, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly as they landed on Samantha. She forced a polite smile, her throat tightening under his scrutiny.

"Samantha," Caleb’s father said, his voice as stiff as his posture. "We’ve heard so much about you."

Samantha smiled, though it felt strained. "Thank you for having me."

He gave a curt nod, his expression unreadable. Monica, seated at the far end of the table, shot a glare in her direction.

Her lips curled into a sneer as she leaned back in her chair, arms crossed like she owned the place. The unspoken hostility between them hung thick in the air.

"Father," Caleb said, his voice cutting through the tension. "I wanted to talk to you about the wedding."

Monica’s eyes flashed with anger, and Samantha could feel her gaze burning holes into her.

Caleb’s father shifted in his seat, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Caleb. "The wedding? I assumed we were still on track for it."

Caleb shook his head slightly, his voice firm but calm. "I can’t go through with it."

Monica’s chair scraped loudly against the floor as she shot to her feet.

"What are you talking about?" Her voice dripped with venom, her eyes darting between Caleb and Samantha.

Samantha braced herself, her heart racing as Monica’s fury washed over her. She kept her gaze steady, refusing to flinch under the woman’s withering stare.

Caleb, unfazed, turned to his father. "I’ve told you before, I can’t marry you Monica. I’m with Samantha now. I love her."

The room fell silent, and Samantha felt her breath catch.

The words had been rehearsed, part of their carefully crafted act, but hearing them out loud sent a strange jolt through her.

She wasn’t supposed to feel anything. This was all a façade. A lie.

But Caleb said the words so easily, so naturally, that for a split second, it didn’t feel like an act.

Monica’s face twisted with rage, her knuckles white as she gripped the back of her chair.

"This is absurd! You’re just doing this to spite me!" she spat, her voice rising.

Samantha swallowed hard, forcing herself to remain composed.

Caleb’s father’s gaze, his penetrating stare as if he was trying to see through her façade. She could sense the tremors of his anger building up under the surface.

Caleb, on the other hand, held his ground, his expression unyielding.

Monica, her face flushed with rage, took a step forward, her voice rising. "You can't just break off our engagement like this! Our families have a deal!”

“A deal?” Caleb’s father hissed, his eyes glinting like steel. “I don’t recall any deal.” His voice was low and dangerous, like the rumble of an approaching storm.

Monica opened her mouth to speak, but Caleb cut her off.

“Dad, you know our engagement was arranged. But I’ve found love with Samantha. The kind of love that can’t be arranged.” He turned to Samantha, his eyes softening as he reached for her hand. “Isn’t that right, darling?”

“Absolutely,” Samantha replied, squeezing Caleb’s hand, her heart pounding in her chest.

Caleb’s father raised a hand, silencing them with a look. He turned back to Caleb, his expression darkening.

"Are you serious about this?" His voice was cold, cutting.

"Yes," Caleb answered without hesitation. "I am. Samantha and I are together, and that’s not going to change."

Samantha’s stomach churned, the weight of Caleb’s father’s gaze pressing down on her. She could feel the skepticism radiating off him, like he was waiting for her to slip up, to show some crack in their story.

He leaned forward slightly, his eyes narrowing on Samantha. "And you, Samantha? Do you love my son?"

The question hit her like a freight train, and for a moment, her mind went blank. This was part of the plan—they’d prepared for this, but the pressure of the moment made everything feel more intense.

She swallowed, forcing a steady smile. "Yes," she replied, her voice steady despite the knot tightening in her chest. "I care about Caleb deeply."

There was a pause, and Caleb’s father studied her, his face betraying nothing. Monica scoffed loudly, shaking her head in disbelief, but Caleb’s father didn’t acknowledge her.

After what felt like an eternity, Caleb’s father finally leaned back in his chair, his expression hard. "Very well," he said, though the words sounded begrudging. "I won’t interfere. But don’t expect my blessing just yet."

Samantha exhaled, relief flooding through her even though his acceptance felt far from genuine. It was a small victory, but it was enough.

As the dinner wrapped up, the tension still lingered, though Monica’s icy glares remained fixed on Samantha. They exchanged little more than pleasantries before excusing themselves to leave.

Caleb guided Samantha through the foyer, his hand resting lightly on the small of her back, maintaining the charade until they were safely out of sight. As they stepped outside, Caleb’s hand slid into hers, a casual gesture to keep up the act.

But something about the way his fingers intertwined with hers made her heart skip. The gesture was simple, nothing they hadn’t practiced before, but now it felt different. Too real.

She glanced at him, but Caleb’s expression remained unreadable as they walked to the car, his hand still warm in hers.

And suddenly, the line between their act and reality felt dangerously blurred.
