Chapter 28

"Okay... which one, which one, which..." I mumbled to myself, narrowing my eyes as I stood before the mirror. My closet had never felt so overwhelming.

I ran my fingers over different fabrics, feeling their textures glide against my skin. Tonight I needed the perfect outfit. Something that screamed confidence, power, but didn’t take away from the professionalism of the event. The charity auction I had been working on for weeks was finally here. Late-night revisions, the pressure of making every detail perfect—it was all leading up to tonight.

I paused, pulling out a classic black dress. The fabric shimmered as it caught the light, sophisticated yet understated. "Maybe this one," I murmured, holding it against my body. But before I could settle on the choice, my phone buzzed, pulling me from my thoughts.

“Annie?” I said, smiling as I recognized the name. My best friend, always with impeccable timing.

“Samantha!” Annie’s voice was brimming with excitement, almost vibrating through the phone. “I just found out! You’re on television! Everyone’s talking about your presentation—girl, this is *huge*!”

I couldn’t help the grin spreading across my face. “Really?”

“Yes! It’s everywhere! You must be feeling so pumped.”

“I am,” I admitted, my gaze drifting back to the mirror. I looked at the black dress, feeling suddenly unsure. "It’s kind of surreal, though. Something I worked so hard on is now out there for the world to see. Nerve-wracking, but... I think I’m ready."

“You are *so* ready, Sam. This is your moment. You’re not just showing off your designs—you’re showing the world what you’re made of.”

Her words sent a wave of confidence through me. I hung up the black dress and reached for a deep red one instead. It was bold, daring. A statement dress, and tonight, I needed to make a statement.

“So… how’s work?” Annie’s voice took on a playful tone as I slipped the red dress on. “And how’s your super-hot boss? Caleb, right? How’s that going?”

The mention of Caleb made my heart skip, a strange mix of irritation and intrigue. I turned the water on, stepping into the warm shower to clear my mind.

“It's… complicated,” I finally muttered, rinsing the conditioner from my hair.

“Complicated how?” Annie pushed, her curiosity as relentless as always.

Stepping out of the shower, I wrapped myself in a towel, thinking over my answer. "Well, he’s got a girlfriend, right? But sometimes it feels like… like he’s paying more attention to me. I don’t get it.”

There was a pause before Annie’s voice sharpened. "Wait, *what*? He has a girlfriend but keeps giving you attention? What’s his deal?"

I sighed, frustration bubbling up again as I slipped into the red dress. It fit me like a second skin, the smooth fabric cooling my heated nerves. “I don’t know. He changed my design the other day, the one I’ve been perfecting for weeks. I swear, he just did it to get under my skin."

Annie gasped. “Hold up. He messed with your work? Are you serious?”

“Yeah," I said, adjusting the dress in the mirror. "It’s like he’s trying to throw me off, but then he’ll act all nice and attentive... and it just messes with my head. One minute he’s all business, the next—he’s lingering, watching me like he cares."

“Okay, but… do you *like* him?” Annie asked, her tone now low and serious.

I froze for a moment, my fingers resting on the clasp of a necklace. Did I like him? It was a question I wasn’t sure I wanted to answer. Sure, Caleb was... well, Caleb. Charismatic, charming, a bit of a puzzle. But liking him? That was a whole other thing.

“I don’t know,” I said quietly, fastening the necklace. “Sometimes it feels like he’s really there for me, like he sees me. But then he pulls back, and I’m left wondering if he’s just manipulating me.”

There was a pause before Annie spoke again, softer this time. “Sam, just be careful, okay? It sounds like he’s playing mind games.”

“I know.” I nodded, though she couldn’t see me. "But there’s something else."

“What?” Annie’s voice was edged with concern.

As I slipped on my heels, a chill ran down my spine. My thoughts turned back to the strange text messages I’d received recently, and the unsettling photo of Caleb and me from London. "It’s like someone’s been watching me. I got this weird text a few days ago—it said I was being watched. Then they sent me a photo of Caleb and me. I don’t know who’s behind it or why, but... it’s starting to freak me out."

"Wait, *what?*" Annie’s voice spiked with alarm. “Samantha, that’s terrifying. Who could be doing this?"

“I have no idea,” I whispered, adjusting the dress in the mirror. The red fabric seemed to shimmer, bold and fierce, yet suddenly a little too daring. “It’s like someone’s targeting me, but I don’t know why.”

“You need to be careful, Sam. This sounds serious. Have you told anyone else?”

“No,” I admitted. “I don’t even know where to start. What am I supposed to say? ‘Hey, someone’s stalking me, and I have no idea who it is’? It just sounds…”

“Real,” Annie cut in, her tone firm. “It sounds real, and you need to take it seriously. Be aware of your surroundings, especially while you’re still in London.”

Her words made the fear sink deeper into my chest. I tried to shake it off, but the sense of being watched clung to me like a shadow.

"Just promise me you'll be careful," Annie pleaded.

"I will," I said softly, grabbing my clutch and heading toward the door. "I'll keep my guard up."

"Good. But seriously, Sam, if anything else happens, you *have* to let me know."

"I promise," I said, stepping out into the cool evening air. "But right now, I need to focus on the presentation. I can't let this throw me off."

"Right," Annie agreed, her voice lightening. "You've got this, girl. Knock 'em dead."

"Thanks, Annie," I smiled as I ended the call.

But just as I slipped my phone into my bag, a sleek black car caught my eye, parked across the street. My heart skipped a beat.

It was Caleb’s.

He always seemed to be there, lingering in the background like an unanswered question.

My heels clicked against the pavement as I walked toward the car, smoothing my hair with one hand, trying to steady my nerves. As I got closer, the window rolled down, revealing Caleb’s sharp features illuminated by the streetlights. He leaned casually against the seat, his tailored suit hugging his broad shoulders. His dark hair was tousled just enough to give him that effortless, rugged charm.

He smiled, that confident grin that always stirred something in me, no matter how much I tried to ignore it.

“Need a ride?” His voice was smooth, with a teasing edge like he already knew my answer.

I bit my lip, my heart fluttering, but I kept my expression neutral. “What are you doing here, Caleb?”

He leaned over, opening the door without breaking eye contact. “Hop in.”

I hesitated, just for a moment, before sliding into the passenger seat. The scent of his cologne—woodsy, masculine—filled the space, wrapping around me in a way that was both comforting and unnerving.

As the door closed, I could feel the tension between us, thick and unspoken. What was it about him that always left me feeling so off-balance? Was it the way he looked at me, like he saw something no one else did? Or was it just my own confusion, my own desire to know if there was more between us?

The engine roared to life, pulling me out of my thoughts. Without another word, Caleb started the car, his face unreadable as we pulled away from the curb.

And off we went.
