The cool morning air bit into my skin as I hurried down the nearly deserted street, each step echoed by the sharp click of my heels against the pavement.
My heart raced, syncing with the rhythm of my footsteps, anxiety gnawing at me with every passing second.
I knew I was late for work.. again.. but this time, there was something more pressing than just the ticking clock.
I kept my eyes straight ahead, focusing on the path that led to the main street.
But then I heard it again, a distinct sound behind me.
Footsteps.
They matched my pace, almost as if whoever was behind me was mimicking every move I made.
Panic surged within me, tightening its grip around my chest. I quickened my pace, but so did the footsteps.
Was I imagining this? Was it just paranoia playing tricks on me?
I tried to convince myself it was nothing, just someone else headed to work, minding their own business.
But the lonely street offered no comfort.. no familiar faces, no reassuring bustle, just an unnerving silence.
My breath hitched as I mustered the courage to glance over my shoulder.
My eyes met those of a hooded figure, their face hidden in the shadows.
The person was standing just a few steps behind, motionless yet menacing.
My heart pounded wildly.
Every instinct screamed at me to run, but my legs felt like they were rooted to the ground.
The cold grip of fear froze me in place as I scanned the area desperately for an escape.
The alley was narrow and lined with parked cars, but there was nowhere to hide, nowhere to blend in.
What was happening? Was I overthinking this, or was something real and dangerous unfolding?
I tightened my grip around my bag, ready to defend myself if it came to that.
Just as the tension reached its peak, a car screeched to a halt right in front of me.
I didn’t even have time to process what was happening before the passenger window rolled down, and I saw a familiar face.. Caleb.
Relief flooded me instantly.
He reached over and unlocked the door, and I jumped in, not daring to look back as he sped off.
My chest heaved with every rapid breath, my pulse racing even as the cold air inside the car wrapped around me.
Despite the frigid temperature, my palms were sweaty, my nerves frayed.
Caleb noticed and shot a concerned glance my way.
“What happened?” he asked, his voice low and serious.
I struggled to find my words, still trying to catch my breath.
“I-I think… someone was following me,” I managed to stammer.
The words felt foreign as they left my lips, like speaking them out loud made the situation all too real.
Caleb’s expression darkened as he kept his eyes on the road.
“You shouldn’t be walking alone on that path,” he said, his tone sharp with concern. “It’s known for shady activity, especially in the early morning. You need to be careful.”
I nodded, still too rattled to respond properly.
“Thank you for coming when you did. How did you know I was there?”
The question slipped out before I could stop it.
I was grateful, but the timing was just a little too perfect.
He glanced at me briefly before focusing back on the road.
“I got to the office and didn’t see you. Figured you were running late, so I thought I’d come pick you up.”
His explanation was simple, almost casual, but something about it struck me as odd.. thought he'd come pick me up??
I forced a smile and muttered a quiet “thank you,” trying to push away the unease.
Only then did I allow myself to really look at him.
Caleb was dressed sharply, as always.. a crisp white shirt under a tailored navy blazer, paired with dark trousers that emphasized his tall, athletic build.
His dark hair was neatly styled, and even in the midst of the tense moment, there was something undeniably attractive about the way he carried himself.
But the serious look on his face reminded me that this wasn’t the time to be distracted by appearances.
As if sensing my thoughts, Caleb broke the silence.
“Have you had breakfast yet?”
I hesitated, considering lying, but then decided against it.
“No, I haven’t. But I’ll grab something at the office,” I added quickly, hoping to avoid any further interaction.
I wasn’t in the mood for more awkward conversations, especially after what just happened.
“Alright,” he replied, offering no further comment.
When we arrived at the office, he pulled into the parking lot, and we stepped out of the car together.
The moment we walked through the front doors, I could feel the stares and hear the hushed whispers.
People were watching, their eyes lingering a bit too long as Caleb and I walked side by side.
Jealous murmurs reached my ears, a mix of envy and curiosity hanging in the air.
As we made our way to our respective desks, I caught Nelly’s eye.
She was my desk partner and closest colleague.. well, so far.. a sharp-witted lady with jet-black hair and mischievous eyes.
She leaned in closer, grinning as she whispered,
“Well, look at you! Arriving with the boss, huh? Must be something special.”
I rolled my eyes and gave her a dismissive wave.
“It’s nothing, really. Just a ride,” I muttered, hoping to end the teasing before it spiraled into full-blown office gossip.
Nelly arched an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced, but she didn’t push further.
We settled into our work routine, but the unsettling encounter from earlier kept playing in the back of my mind, a gnawing worry that I couldn’t shake off.
I had barely settled into reviewing some files when my office phone rang.
I picked it up, expecting the usual work call, but the voice on the other end made me stiffen.
“Report to my office immediately,” Caleb’s voice came through the line, firm and direct.
I hung up, my heart skipping a beat. What now?
