Run

Run

Solan’s POV

Sitting between all the flowers in my balcony, I soak myself in the silence of the night.

My nose tingles from the icy air, carrying the faint smell of apple pie I know Mom and Milly are cooking.

This should calm me, make me feel sleepy even, but it doesn't… How can it when my annoying wolf won't shut up?

“Run.” He growls, clawing at my mind.

“No,” I hiss under my breath, my chest tightening. “You remember what happened last time. I almost lost my life.”

“I kept us safe. This time we're even stronger.” he says angrily.

I scowl at the floor, determined to stay exactly where I am. “I’m not putting myself in danger.”

But he doesn’t listen and keeps growling like a mad dog.

“Get up! I can smell them.” He thunders.

I don't move, but my body begins to sweat as I fight harder to quench the urge to shift.
“Stop this.” I grit out, glaring at my growing claws.

“We need to go now. This is our chance. I won't put you in danger… trust me.” He says.

“No, I won’t do it.”

His claws scrape harder, tearing at the back of my mind. “You can't fight me all night, Solan.”

The pressure in my head gets worse… so bad that tears sting my eyes.
My heart clenches in panic. I rise up, my knees trembling, my spine burning.

Stumbling out of my room, I rush down the hall, ignoring the worried stares of guards. Two of which step in beside me immediately.
My bare feet slap the floor until I skid to a stop in front of my father’s study.

With a grunt, I push the door open, forgetting to knock.
“Solan?” Dad jumps to his feet, Uncle Victor's right behind him.
“D..Dad!” I groan.

“What is going on?” he asks sharply.

Alpha Aul rushes to my side, quickly checking my pulse and temperature.

“I think he's about to shift.” Aul says.

Dad's eyes soften. “Solan don't fight it.” he whispers.

But I shake my head. “It’s happening again. My wolf… he’s talking to me… he wants me to go into the woods. I don’t know if I’m losing my mind…”

Dad studies me closely. “You’re hearing him? Now?”

“Yes!” I almost shout, clutching my head. “He won’t shut up! I don’t… I don’t want to lose control again!” I force out, feeling my fangs grow.

“Solan, calm down. Look at me. What exactly is he saying?” Dad asks, looking equally angry and confused.

“R…run,” I bite out, my breath shaking. “He says he can smell trouble. That we need to r..run.”

Victor exchanges a look with Dad. “Are you sure you’re not just…”

“Going crazy?” I snap, my chest heaving.

“No Solan,” Dad tries.

“You think I want this?” I snarl, feeling my wolf claw it's way to the surface.

Frustration surges hot through me, and before I can hold it back, my body bends and twists.

I hear and feel my bones snap but I don't feel pain like last time.
Instead I feel relieved.
Standing on all fours, I shake out my white fur, ignoring the shouts around me as I burst out, my paws hitting the ground in eagerness.

“YES, FINALLY!” My wolf roars, tearing easily through the guards that try to stop us.

“SOLAN!” Dad growls right before his large wolf chases after us.

Without thinking, I bound forward, smashing through the locked front door, running outside the pack house.

About eight werewolves form a circle, running towards me, determined to keep me within the pack but my claws dig into the hard ground, and with a powerful back kick, I throw myself forward.

“Solan, Stop!” I hear someone scream behind me.

But it’s too late. I’m already flying over the heads of Deathfang’s warriors, disappearing into the woods.

The woods welcome me, branches giving way as I run past… Okay, maybe my wolf breaks all the branches in his way but it's literally the same thing.

It feels as though he's taking the lead, pursuing something only he can smell. My heart pounds in rhythm with my paws as he runs faster.

“Where are we going?!” I yell at him.
“Don't worry, you’ll see.” He grins, running even faster as growls and howls from the pack draw nearer.

The path he drags me through is strange, twisting deeper and further than I’ve ever gone willingly.
Mud coats my legs, but I don’t stop, my wolf’s hunger for the chase driving me harder.

Finally we burst into a clearing and my wolf screeches to a halt, panting excitedly in the silence.

My ears twitch as Dad's wolf rushes in right before the other wolves.

“I told you,” I snarl inside. “There’s no one here.”

My wolf doesn’t stop sniffing around though. He grunts in my head, becoming restless.
Just then our ears perk up at the sound of a crack. Suddenly a tiny branch falls down, pulling everyone's attention.

We all stand still, our eyes lifting to the tall tree.
My heart races… but with delight. Because right there… high in the trees… is a figure crouching, trying to blend in with the shadows.

A snarl rips from my throat and before I even think of doing it, I jump, my claws sinking into the tree's bark.

I climb up with insane speed, smirking when the man stumbles back in fear. But there's hardly anything he can do now. Not when my wolf slams into him.
A scream escapes him as we crash to the ground. Well, he crashes to the ground with me standing on him. Sadly his vest keeps him alive.

The moment he hits the dirt, shouts and curses ring out. People run out from the shadow with swords and other weapons draw.

Their stench gives them away… Hunters.

Dad's wolf makes a quick nudge at me, checking if I'm alright but I don't wait to assure him, following my wolf's desperation.

“Ten.” My wolf purrs, making a swift count. “Told you I smelled something.”

Another hunter runs in an attempt to escape. My wolf pants in delight chasing after him.

Arrows fly around me, but everyone of them miss me. My wolf howls with glee before grabbing onto the hand of the coward.
The old man cries out, kicking. It's useless as I fling him across the clearing, towards Dad who's watching me with surprise.

He's never allowed me fight with them but I think I'm pretty good at this.

“You mean WE are pretty good at this.” My wolf corrects.

“Yes, we are.”

Another hunter attacks but I avoid his strike, easily giving way for his sword to sink into a tree, before clamping down on his hand too, dragging his struggling body on the floor as I run up to Dad.

I dump the man there, knowing he can't escape. Not from my father.

My body twists, ready to chase the next target as my wolf’s excitement flares when we spot a woman jumping from branch to branch.

“Ours!” he laughs and I follow suit, enjoying this just as much.
